Obedience Training from DTE

The First Step Toward Dog Agility Training

Agility is a fast-paced sport that involves guiding dogs through different obstacle courses. The best candidates for this type of training are energetic, athletic dogs with a strong drive to work and learn, such as Border Collies, Australian Shepherds, Shetland Sheepdogs, Jack Russell Terriers, and Belgian Malinois. However, any dog with enthusiasm, focus, and basic obedience training can benefit from agility exercises.

Many owners choose DTE for basic obedience before starting dog agility training. While we don’t offer competition-level training, our obedience programs help build key skills like focus, impulse control, and responsiveness.

Our trainers will work closely with you throughout the obedience program, ensuring your dog masters fundamental commands and you feel confident to continue agility training on your own.

Why Start Obedience Training Before Agility Training?

Dog Training Elite

Agility training demands focus, discipline, and responsiveness. Before tackling obstacle courses, dogs need a solid foundation in obedience to ensure they can follow commands, stay engaged, and work as a team with their handler.

Here’s how obedience training with Dog Training Elite sets dogs up for success in agility:

Agility courses can be full of distractions, including large crowds, other dogs, and loud noises. Obedience training teaches your dog to stay focused on you and respond to commands, even in high-energy environments.

Agility courses require dogs to pause and wait at key thresholds, such as the start line, and only move when directed. Obedience training reinforces patience and discipline through commands like “sit,” “heel,” and “down,” ensuring your dog stays focused and follows the rules of the sport.

Obedience training deepens trust and communication between dog and handler, making teamwork in agility training much more effective. A confident dog is more likely to take on new challenges with enthusiasm.

Before dogs can learn agility-specific commands, they must first master basic obedience. Training in focus, recall, and impulse control lays the groundwork for advanced commands like “jump,” “tunnel,” “weave,” and “climb.”

At Dog Training Elite, we don’t teach advanced agility commands, but our training makes it easier for your dog to learn and respond to agility training in the future.

If your dog has mastered basic obedience and you're interested in starting agility training on your own, understanding what obstacles to train for is the first place to start.

Here are some common agility challenges and training tips:

Jumps

Dogs must leap over hurdles at varying heights without knocking the bar down. In competitions, jumps can include single bars, double jumps, and tire jumps.

  • Training Tip: Start with low jumps and use treats or toys to guide your dog over. Gradually increase height as their confidence and ability grows.

Weave Poles

Dogs weave through a series of upright poles in a precise pattern. This is one of the most challenging agility obstacles, requiring speed, flexibility, and precise footwork.

  • Training Tip: Use a lure-and-reward method or guide your dog through the poles with a leash. Begin with wider pole spacing and narrow the gaps as your dog improves.

Tunnels

Dogs run through enclosed tunnels, which can be straight or curved. Some dogs may hesitate at first, especially if they are unfamiliar with dark or enclosed spaces.

  • Training Tip: Start with a short, straight tunnel and use treats or a favorite toy to encourage your dog through. Gradually introduce curved tunnels to increase difficulty.

A-Frame & Dog Walk

These obstacles require dogs to climb, balance, and descend elevated surfaces. The A-frame is a tall, triangular ramp, while the dog walk is a narrow, elevated plank with ramps on both ends. Both require precise foot placement and body control.

  • Training Tip: Use a leash or hand signals to guide your dog slowly up and down. Reward calm, controlled movements to prevent them from rushing or jumping off too soon.

I would give this group 100 stars if that was an option! I found myself with an unruly young lab puppy (Maisy)that I feared was untrainable. She was jumping on people, constantly in the pool, barking all time, etc. We called Dog Training Elite to seek help - and boy did they deliver! Nate came to the rescue as our trainer and is beyond words amazing. The first day I expressed doubt, but his calm confidence left me feeling hopeful. Nate and the entire group that supports him are patient knowledgeable, and really took the time to understand our dog’s behavior and needs. The training methods were clear, effective, and based on positive reinforcement, which made a noticeable difference in a short amount of time. Ten weeks and lots of practice later I have an amazing companion in Maisy; we are both happier and enjoy spending time together. This program is worth every penny. Nancy Jessee

I’m going to be really honest here, because this comes from the heart. After a really bad experience with dog training in the past, I had pretty much given up. I sent my dog Nitro off to a trainer and it failed—and that kind of disappointment sticks with you. On top of that, hearing all the stereotypes about Huskies even mixed breed being “untrainable” got in my head, and I truly started to believe maybe it just wasn’t possible. Then I got my Pomsky, Nova. I’m so bonded to him and him me, and something in me said to try again… even though I was scared of wasting time, money, and trust on another failed experience. That’s when I found Dog Training Elite (DTE)… and everything changed. As you all know facebook seems to listen… their page came across my feed. Jeremy, Kristi, and their team didn’t just train my dog—they believed in us when I was struggling to believe in myself. They supported me, encouraged me, and even cried with me through the tough moments. When I felt like Nova wasn’t going to get it, they didn’t give up on us. They pushed us through. They made my little velcro gremlin fur ball into an unbelievable independent confident well mannered little obedient dog. Now we are a still a work in progress as people, we are never perfect in life but I’m telling you for my 6 month old “sassy pants” to completely flip like he did in just 2weeks I can’t wait to see how much more he’s going to change and grow and learn in next weeks to come and our journey from here on out 😭❣️🐾🐾 we will be working towards him becoming a service dog . And somehow… they made what felt impossible, possible. If you have a dog that you think is “too much,” or someone has told you there’s no chance—please don’t give up. Pick up the phone and call Dog Training Elite. They don’t just train dogs… they change  lives. Forever grateful ❤️

We have an almost three year old mini Aussie doodle, Bindi. She was a sweet, smart dog with lots of energy and love. We had a hard time training her at home so it was difficult taking her all the places we wanted to take her - from simple walks down the street, patio cafes, etc. she pulled so hard on her leash she choked herself, got super anxious about anything she saw or heard - was ready to bark or run after it, etc. We tried a lot of things but nothing really worked. I started researching formal training and landed with Dog Elite. We met to learn more about training and signed up Bindi for the next session. That was Feb-Mar. She’s a very different dog now and we are better owners. We appreciated the videos to help reinforce training for us and Bindi. We’ve attended the Saturday morning trainings and continue to learn more. Bindi loves kids and people in general but would jump on the and get overly excited. She still gets excited to meet people, but is calmer and doesn’t jump on anyone. She does not react to every sight and sound in every situation, which is better for all of us. We are able to take her more places because she follows commands so well and knows how to behave. Bindi is much more relaxed (and so are we) and we enjoy her so much more - from shorter outings like a walk on a trail to a brewery visit to long road trips - it’s all easier, more relaxed and more fun for all of us. We still have more training to do but it’s about one month after her initial training so we feel fantastic about the progress. We are so grateful for the transformation and look forward to continuing learning and training Bindi with Dog Elite’s help. They patiently meet your dog and you where you are and help you understand why you need to handle behaviors and situations in certain way. We highly recommend their services!

I had an absolutely wonderful experience with Dog Training Elite. I had Amber for all of my training sessions and she was professional and personable the entire time. She taught me so much! I learned a great deal, likely more than my dog who was an absolute natural and took to the training extremely well. I sincerely feel that my bond with my dog has been made so much stronger after having worked with Dog Training Elite. I have no problems taking my dog into public spaces or walking her. Before training she would pull and try to sniff everything possible. My dog seems so much more regulated and in control. The training has been worth every penny!

Dog Training Elite has been amazing to work with. The trainers explain everything they are asking you to do and why. They have worked with our schedules as well. We tried online training during COVID with another company, boarding training with another, but no one has really helped us with our anxious Frenchie as much as this team has so far. We are now excited to try group training which we would not have considered a few months ago!

We were so lucky to find Dog Training Elite of Northern Utah! I knew we needed a service dog, but didn't know who to trust. When we started our puppy with them, I saw big improvements even in the first week, and now we have a truly dependable service dog. They really care, and are extremely professional. Zero complaints, only gratitude. Would not hesitate to send anyone to them.
