Dog Potty Training

Let’s be honest—potty training can feel like a full-time job in those early days. Whether it’s a brand-new puppy or an older dog with some lingering habits, the struggle is real. But the good news? You don’t have to face it alone.

At Dog Training Elite, potty training is included in every one of our puppy training programs and can be incorporated into obedience programs for older dogs.

Our trainers meet you where you are and help your dog develop the awareness and habits that lead to fewer accidents. If you’re looking for puppy potty training, you’re in the right place.

Potty Training Is Where Obedience Begins

Potty training is the first step in developing a well-behaved dog. It’s not just about avoiding accidents; it’s about shaping a confident, well-mannered dog you can enjoy wherever you go.

When a mature, healthy dog understands when and where to go, they also begin to understand structure, boundaries, and how to follow through. Starting early is important, and the sooner puppies are potty broken, the easier it is for them to learn advanced obedience skills.

What If It’s an Older Dog?

Potty challenges don’t just affect puppies. Some older dogs never got the right start, and others may be adjusting to a new home or routine, or marking territory.

Before jumping into training, we always suggest ruling out health issues like:

  • Bladder stones
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Incontinence or age-related conditions

If your dog gets the all-clear from the vet, then it’s time to look at behavior. Our trainers will help you identify what’s going on and create a realistic plan to turn things around.

Many of our clients are amazed by how quickly their older dogs adapt once they understand the expectations. You’re not stuck—you just need the right tools and support.

I can’t say enough great things about Vince at Dog Training Elite! Over the course of our six sessions, I’ve seen a huge improvement not only in Scottie’s behavior, but also in my own confidence as a dog owner. Before working with Vince, Scottie was very dog reactive and difficult to walk on a leash, which made everyday outings stressful. Thanks to Vince’s guidance and training approach, Scottie has made incredible progress - walks are now much more controlled and enjoyable, and his reactivity has improved significantly. Since Scottie is now two, Vince helped us break his stubborn patterns. What really stood out to me was how available and supportive Vince was throughout the entire process. Anytime I had questions or was unsure how to handle a specific behavior, he was quick to respond and always took the time to talk things through. He provided practical, effective strategies that made a real difference, especially in tougher situations. Thanks to Vince’s expertise, Scottie is more well-behaved, and I feel much more confident handling different scenarios. I highly recommend him to anyone looking for knowledgeable, patient, and genuinely caring dog training support!

If you’re looking for a dog trainer in Raleigh, I cannot recommend Dog Training Elite enough—especially our trainer Kyle. We came to Kyle needing help with reactivity in our cattle dog, right as we were preparing to bring a new puppy into our home (who will be my service dog in training). Needless to say, I was anxious and wanted to make sure I was doing everything right for all of our dogs. Kyle has completely transformed our home and our pack of three, a laid-back senior girl, a reactive cattle dog, and our incoming puppy. He truly feels like a dog whisperer. He is incredibly patient, kind, and takes the time to explain everything in a way that actually makes you feel confident as an owner. The biggest win? Our cattle dog, who used to struggle with strangers, is now OBSESSED with Kyle and gets so excited to see him at every session, and does well in group sessions! That alone says everything. I ask a million questions because I genuinely want to learn and build the best possible bond, especially with my service dog in training, and Kyle never once makes me feel like I’m “too much.” The entire team, from the owners to the trainers, has been so supportive, patient, and understanding of my anxiety through this process. I’m so excited to continue working with Kyle and the Dog Training Elite team as our puppy grows through continued obedience and service training throughout the year. This has been such a positive, confidence-building experience, and I’m grateful we found them! Thank you Cindy, Kyle and David! Highly, highly recommend!

We had such an amazing experience with Dog Training Elite. Angela was the trainer who came to our house, and we don’t know what we would have done if she hadn’t given us the proper structure and tools to be great puppy parents. She was simply amazing for us. The ability to text or call the trainers with any questions at any time has proved to be extremely helpful and really shows that they care. We still have a long way to go, but boy are we glad we went with the Dog Training Elite Charlotte team!

I had an excellent experience with Sidney at Dog Training Elite and would highly recommend them to anyone looking for professional, effective dog training. Sidney is incredibly knowledgeable, patient, and clearly passionate about what she does. She took the time to understand my dog’s specific needs and provided practical, easy-to-follow guidance that made a huge difference. The sessions were well-structured and focused not just on training my dog, but also on teaching me how to be consistent and confident as an owner. I’ve seen a big improvement in my dog’s behavior, obedience, and overall responsiveness. What really stood out was the level of support and encouragement throughout the process. It never felt rushed, and I always felt set up for success.

Today was Buddy’s first lesson and in just one lesson I am impressed. He’s generally an anxious dog and doesn’t like new people in the house. He was tucked up under my arm so stressed at first but by the end of the lesson- he was even playing with our trainer Cate! I can’t wait for more lessons and for my dog to not be so anxious and more confident! 10/10 recommend for anyone who has an anxious dog.

Blaize was knowledgeable and really listened to our concerns with Hugo. She was supportive and encouraging. After each session she made sure we understood the lesson she covered and what we needed to work on with Hugo. It is reassuring to know we can always contact her with questions once we head back north. We enjoyed working with her.

Is it expensive? Yes. Is it worth it? YES!! My reactive and aggressive dog (at 6 years old) has improved so much. She’s been taking treats from strangers and letting them pet her! (With a few minutes of building trust) when she used to jump at them and bite instead.

What Works: Potty Training Tips from Real Trainers

Have you ever wondered how to potty train a puppy? Here are a few of the tried-and-true techniques our trainers use every day to set dogs up for success (and that you can start using right now):

Dogs thrive on routine. Take your puppy to the same quiet area each time they go out, and keep them on a leash to help them focus on the task at hand.

Trainer Tip: Use the same door and same path each time. It helps your pup learn the rhythm and makes success more predictable.

Puppies need frequent breaks. As a general guideline, take them out:

  • After naps
  • After play or excitement
  • Immediately after eating or drinking

The goal is to stay ahead of the accident—not scramble to clean it up after.

Many families tell us that crate training changed everything. And they’re not wrong.

Dogs instinctively avoid going to the bathroom where they sleep—but only if the crate is the right size. Too big, and they might go in one corner and sleep in another. Just right, and they’ll learn to hold it. Always take your dog outside immediately after letting them out of the crate to reinforce good habits.

Pick a simple phrase like “go potty” or “do your business,” and say it when your dog is going. Eventually, they’ll associate the phrase with the action.

This might feel like a small thing now, but it will be helpful in the long term, especially for service dogs. Many of our service dog families tell us that teaching this cue makes things much smoother on busy mornings, while traveling, or before entering public spaces.

We don’t mean “good dog” and a pat. We mean celebrate your puppy’s success like you just won the lottery. Clap, cheer, and praise enthusiastically, especially in the early days.

Positive feedback builds the confidence your pup needs to repeat the behavior again and again.

Watch for signs like sniffing, circling, whining, or suddenly going quiet. These are your cues to grab that leash and head out fast.

Interrupting the behavior early is one of the most effective ways to build new habits and reduce (and eventually eliminate) indoor accidents.
