There is so much to love about puppies. They’re adorable, snuggly, loving and playful. But puppies also come with some destructive behaviors — accidents inside the house, chewing on things they aren’t supposed to, and perhaps worst of all, biting.

Biting, or “mouthing,” is part of how a puppy learns about the world. It’s often meant to be a playful behavior, but those sharp little teeth can hurt! Here are a few tips on how to stop puppy biting in San Antonio, even in a playful way.

Our Balanced Theory

We base our training around the "Classical Conditioning" model (a.k.a. "Pavlovian" or "respondent conditioning"). This includes developing conditioned or automatic reflexes to commands. In its simplest form (after proper conditioning), when the owner says "sit," the dog automatically sits without thinking about it. Our unique techniques ensure our program is a success no matter what behavior we encounter.

  • Empowering Owners
We empower Owners to train so their dog knows who to obey at all times.
  • Personalized
We deal with problem behaviors on a personal basis.
  • Environment Specific
We train wherever issues tend to arise (i.e. jogging, park, home).
  • Supportive
We support Owners in the off-hours (when training is "not in session").
  • Involved
We work with all members of the household.
  • Simplified & Customized
We plan training around the owner's schedule and require only 20 min/day follow-up practice.
  • Continued Training
Additional programs / group sessions offered after in-home training.
  • Lifetime Investment
We follow up & are invested in the owner's success long-term.
  • Satisfaction Ratings
Our high client satisfaction rating sets us apart from competitors.

Took my dog for service dog training (Platinum package). She had already completed a board and train, and was very trainable. DTE took that to the next level in what feels like absolutely no time at all. It's worth noting that the training really is what you make of it. Go to the group trainings. Listen to the trainers. Hold your dog accountable. Do your homework and continue the training at home. If you do all those things, you won't be disappointed with the results.

The team's patience is beyond professional, they are a caring community that take the time to ensure all there human and fur clients understand they are FAMILY. Whitney and Tammy thank you for your management professionalism and getting me and my fur baby established and integrated into the DTE Family first impressions set the tone for new clients. You both are truly appreciated. I am very impressed with the training my fur baby has received and I look forward to the next phase of his training. I am extremely impressed and grateful for Geneva, Wolf, Amanda and Adakias for their professionalism, expertise and passion of love they share with my fur baby. Job well done! My puppy started their service dog training at 3 months old, and I was so impressed with how much he learned in just one week. We didn’t think it’d be possible because of how young he was, but the training facility really puts so much effort into instilling good behaviors. They have made it so easy for me to really keep it up on my end. One thing my husband and I really wanted was to invest in our dog with a good trainer, and highly recommend Dog Training Elite. They’ve worked with my schedule, and really want the best outcome for every dog! Love this place!!!!

I was convinced on a video I saw where treats were thrown everywhere and the dogs simply ignored them. I am so proud to say that my dog Chef now ignores treats offered by straingers and food on floor when we go out for walks. Love that the training facility is always so clean. Employees are super friendly and knowledgeable. Amazed and proud on how my dogs Chef has learned so much, so fast, and now responds more positive on commands given. I personally learned alot, and feel more confident going out and having Chef help me with my Panic Disorder. I highly recommend Dog Training Elite, they are incredible!

I waited for over 3 years on multiple service dog wait lists before I found Dog Training Elite (DTE). I had no idea that I could have my own service dog, trained in my home, in a matter of weeks! Amanda is an AMAZING trainer. I thought I knew a lot about dogs until I met her. She trains not only the dog, but the person handling the dog as well. DTE is a "no brainer" if you need a service dog (or just a well mannered dog). With DTE and Amanda, I am lucky to have not only a best friend (my dog, Titus), but I also made new friends at the weekly training events. DTE and Titus brought me back into society from nearly a decade of being a hermit. I can't say enough great things about DTE, Amanda and Whitley. Thank you all for giving me my life back.

I saw such a huge change in my Dobie's behavior and in myself as a handler. The trainers were incredibly helpful and happy to see her grow with me. She's still a pup, but I'm so proud of her and excited to get her working on tasks as she gets older because of the care and training results I've seen from the team so far. A lot has been going on for me and they've really helped me with the puppy stages TREMENDOUSLY and have set us up with a great foundation. Very professional, hands on, flexible, helpful organization and I would 100% go with them every time.

My rescue pittie mix attended the 2 week obedience training. He's approximately 4 years old and has a mind of his own. Geneva was great with him. Now he listens better and responds appropriately. He will start weekend group training soon to expound on his skills.

I can't thank DTE enough for changing my life and my dog's! We loved challenging ourselves to help create a more stable life for our pup Remi. I can tell each day how much less reactive she is becoming due to the confidence building exercises we have practiced with our trainer Amanda. I would do this all over again knowing how incredible the results truly are with dedication + love. An old dog CAN learn new tricks, and we have direct proof after working with DTE.

How to Get a Puppy to Stop Biting? Teach them that Biting Hurts

Getting a puppy to quit mouthing is actually very simple. You just have to teach your puppy that biting hurts.

How do you teach this? By helping your puppy learn “bite inhibition.” Bite inhibition is a puppy or a dog’s ability to control how hard they bite. Typically puppies learn bite inhibition from playing with other puppies. Biting or mouthing is a common play tactic between puppies and dogs, but occasionally a puppy will bite too hard. This causes their playmate to yelp with pain and stop playing.

The reaction of the bitten puppy helps the puppy who did the biting realize their mistake and learn not to bite so hard. Just like puppies learn how to be gentle with each other, they can learn the same lesson from humans. Even if your puppy has learned bite inhibition while playing with other puppies or dogs, they still need to be taught how sensitive human skin is.

Follow the example of your puppy’s playmates. Let your puppy mouth your hands during play. When they bite you too hard, yelp like a puppy and let your hand go limp to indicate that you have been hurt. This should stop your puppy from continuing to bite you or continuing to play. When they stop, or if they attempt to make you feel better by licking your hand, praise your puppy and resume play. You can also try “time-outs” for your puppy, where you stop playing for 20 seconds after being bitten.

The goal is to teach your puppy that if they bite, playing stops. If they are gentle, play continues. Make sure to reward your puppy with praise and possibly treats when they do a good job. At Dog Training Elite, we know positive reinforcement is the best and most effective way to train puppies and dogs.

Take it to the Next Level

Once your puppy understands that they shouldn’t bite human skin hard, start working on teaching them not to bite human skin at all. Use the same techniques of yelping and stopping play. Over time, gradually reduce the amount of biting you allow until your puppy eventually learns not to bite at all.

Some other techniques for to stop mouthing include the distraction method. If your puppy tends to want to bite you when you pet him, distract him with treats so he’ll get used to being touched without mouthing your hands or arms. Keep your puppy’s favorite toy with you, and if she starts mouthing your hands, give her the toy to bite instead.

What to Avoid

There are some behaviors we humans tend to engage in when we want to play with puppies that actually encourage them to bite. If you’re at a loss for how to stop a puppy from biting, make sure to avoid these habits:

  • Avoid wiggling your fingers or toes in your puppy’s face to entice them to play. This encourages your puppy to bite your hands and feet.
  • Don’t jerk your hands away from your puppy if they bite you. They might lunge forward to grab you with their mouth.
  • Never slap or hit a puppy for biting. This ineffective and cruel and can backfire as a training method. Your puppy might start to play more aggressively, with more biting, or they can become afraid of you.

At Dog Training Elite, we never use physical punishment to train puppies and dogs. We focus on rewarding desired behaviors. This method of training helps build a strong, loving bond between puppies and their owners.
