PTSD Service Dog

DTE: Top PTSD Dog Trainers

A psychiatric or PTSD service dog provides invaluable support to individuals experiencing high anxiety, stress, or trauma-related symptoms. These service animals accompany their handler everywhere, offering emotional support and helping them reintegrate into society.

Through our specialized PTSD service dog training program at Dog Training Elite, dogs are taught to assist in reducing depression, decreasing the frequency and severity of flashbacks, anchoring their handler to the present, and helping minimize suicidal thoughts.

How PTSD Service Dogs Help in Public Settings

For individuals with PTSD, public settings can feel unsafe and overwhelming. Service dogs for PTSD provide grounding and protection, preventing people from crowding their handler and offering emotional support during moments of heightened anxiety.

Service dogs can also be trained to recognize signs of an impending panic attack, wake individuals from night terrors, and regulate emotional responses by applying pressure, helping their handler regain a sense of calm and control.

Benefits of PTSD Service Dog Training

  • Increase activity and integration into society: Dogs are active and need to be exercised regularly, the responsibility of caring for a service animal will force their handler to get out and exercise. A routine is established and ties to the future are forged again.
  • Create a sense of safety: Public settings and crowds are an enormous trigger for most individuals suffering from PTSD. Psychiatric service dogs are trained to create a physical barrier between their handler and crowds of people.
  • Ground in reality, redirect hyper-vigilance: Hyper-vigilance is a symptom of PTSD and creates constant tension and paranoia within suffers. Service dogs are trained to recognize their handler’s warning signs for anxiety, hyper-vigilance, and panic attacks and redirect that energy into positive coping skills and grounding techniques such as petting the dog.
  • Reduce nightmares and flashbacks: One of the most emotionally challenging situations for individuals with PTSD to deal with are flashbacks and nightmares. They can transport an individual back to a terrifying time in their life where they have felt unsafe, threatened, and traumatized. A PTSD service animal is trained to bring their handler back to reality quickly and calmly, ground the individual, and help them to feel safe in their environment again.

Scott has been a great trainer to work with and is willing to take the time to work through things to help me get it right when I work with Toby. I have noticed an overall improvement and feel more confident on the work I am doing between sessions.

We just finished in home training for our 6 year old dog. I have already noticed a huge change in his behavior! The training was really well structured and our dog picked up on commands quickly. Grace and Eric were great to work with, they were very patient and did not make us feel judged! Very happy with our experiences!

I am writing to share my experience and express my appreciation to the dog Training Elite service Northeast Atlanta Elite. Gosia was my dog Daisy trainer. She has professionalism, patience and genuine care for dogs. In the past I had not have a positive experience with dog trainers. My dog still was struggled with leash pulling, anxiety and basic obedience. Gosia, used a positive teaching reinforcement and structure, that made a difference on Daisy's behavior and more confidence as an owner. She clearly explained each step of the training process and also, she took the time to ensure how to reinforce my dog behaviors at home. The group class was truly beneficial for Daisy, allowing her to reinforce commands and socialize with other dogs. Daisy has a significant improvement walking calmly on the leach, she is responding to commands and reduced her anxiety. Daisy will continue her training with the same company as a service dog. I am gladly, to recommend the dog Training Elite Northeast Atlanta, Michael and Gosia to anyone looking for knowledgeable and compassionate trainers. The dog will learn commands and the dog will change behaviors.

We had a great experience with this Dog Training Elite program. They worked with our 8-month-old puppy, and the results have been fantastic. Matt and Paul were both excellent—knowledgeable, patient, and clearly passionate about what they do. One of the best parts of the program has been the weekly group meetups at the park. These sessions have had a huge impact on our puppy’s training, especially with socialization and reinforcing what he’s learned in a real-world environment. We’ve seen a big improvement in his behavior and confidence, and we couldn’t be happier. Highly recommend to anyone looking for professional, effective dog training.

Red is an extraordinarily kind and patient person, my 3 year old frenchie Zeppelin has come so far in the 4 months since we started training with Dog Training Elite. Not only has my boy learned solid commands, but walking on a leash and interacting with other dogs has been a night and day difference. Our trainer Red not only provides support and praise, but has provided me with peace of mind and assuages all fears/concerns still to go with furthering our training goals. He’s a genuine asset to your organization, and we look forward to our next lessons with him in group classes. Thank you for all that you do!

I really have no words! We started this process with little hopes and just the mind set of “maybe one day” but man with the help of Dog Training Elite, my girl has the ability to be her best self! I am no teacher especially no dog trainer and yet these dog trainers didn’t just teacher my dog but they taught me as well! They were very professional, helpful, and my dog was HAPPY to see them! I am very excited for my puppy’s next steps with them!

I would give this group 100 stars if that was an option! I found myself with an unruly young lab puppy (Maisy)that I feared was untrainable. She was jumping on people, constantly in the pool, barking all time, etc. We called Dog Training Elite to seek help - and boy did they deliver! Nate came to the rescue as our trainer and is beyond words amazing. The first day I expressed doubt, but his calm confidence left me feeling hopeful. Nate and the entire group that supports him are patient knowledgeable, and really took the time to understand our dog’s behavior and needs. The training methods were clear, effective, and based on positive reinforcement, which made a noticeable difference in a short amount of time. Ten weeks and lots of practice later I have an amazing companion in Maisy; we are both happier and enjoy spending time together. This program is worth every penny. Nancy Jessee
