Positive Dog Training Techniques

Greenville Positive Reinforcement Dog Trainers

Research shows that focusing on positive reinforcement when a desired behavior occurs and not worrying about correcting bad behavior in dogs is more effective and has longer-lasting results than training that incorporates punishment for bad behavior.

Positive reinforcement dog training in Greenville, SC works because dogs are inherently eager to please. Rewarding your dog for good behavior helps create a deep, loving relationship with your dog built on trust, as opposed to one built on fear of punishment. The difference between a dog who has been trained to obey out of fear of being punished vs. a dog who learns to obey through a positive, loving bond with their owner is huge.

Dog Training Elite Upstate SC trainers use treats as an initial reward for puppies and dogs learning commands. When the trainer is absent, or you’re in between obedience classes, you can continue to use treats as a reward for your dog when they exhibit a desired behavior. Dogs tend to be highly food-motivated, so this is an extremely useful tool. You can also reward your dog with a play session, take them to the dog park or anything else you know your dog enjoys. After all, you know your dog best!

As for not worrying about bad behavior – it may feel strange to act like everything is fine when your dog chews on your shoes, or goes to the bathroom inside your home. But focusing on rewarding good behavior and forgoing punishment for bad behavior is more successful in the long run.

Relying on punishment for errors and “low value” rewards, such as praise or petting are long held “traditional” methods for dog training. Punishments like flicking a dog’s nose, shocking them with a shock collar, or anything else that may cause a dog pain are unfortunately still in use today by many dog trainers.

Not only is it inhumane, but using punishment as a tool can actually backfire. For example: punishing a dog for going to the bathroom inside a house won’t teach them to go outside instead. Often, the dog only understands that the mess makes their owner mad. Instead of going outside, the dog is likely to continue to make messes indoors — where the owner can’t find them.

Punishment training also damages the relationship between dog and owner. Dogs do not understand right and wrong. Instead of associating punishment with a specific behavior they learn to avoid, as with the bathroom example, they instead learn to live in constant fear of punishment. This prevents owners from bonding with their dogs in a meaningful way.

Elite Upstate was amazing. They are super responsive with any questions and super helpful. Our in-home trainer, Sydney, was so good with Penelope and patient with us humans. :) I also love that we are able to train without treats. We attended our first group class today and it was great. Great way for healthy dog interactions and learning with distractions.

Dog Training Elite is remarkable. I’ve taken several training courses over the years that I’ve had babies, I so wish I had these folks back then. This will let a life time now. Gracie still has a road to travel but much easier to understand. Can’t wait for more training:) Thank you

We are so happy with the training you all have done with Sanka, our corgi, and with us! You were highly recommended by a friend and I was skeptical that it would make a difference unless we implemented everything perfectly on our end when she wasn't in a training session. But she responded so well and the results were seen fairly quickly. Having her to place while we are eating or when we need her to not be involved in what is going on around her has been HUGE! She is so much better behaved that she gets to do more and is more fun to have around other people. Jared was very flexible with the training schedule and was great about focusing on the specific things with which we needed help during the later sessions. We are now looking forward to doing the group sessions, which I think are great additional services provided. Can't say enough good things about the training!

This was a great experience for our puppy as well as the family. I am absolutely amazed by how much he learned in a short amount of time. We had a wonderful experience with Sydney and would highly recommend this to any dog owner. We look forward to continuing the training through group sessions!

We just finished the final in-home training session for our two 1.5 year old black lab pups and we couldn’t be more pleased with the results of the training. Sydney and Jared both did an amazing job teaching us how to work with our pups, and we now have so many tools. In the pups, we saw an immediate response to the training and they have only increased in positive behaviors since the start. We are excited to begin the group sessions, and feel it will only enhance even more our dogs’ ability to restrain unwanted behaviors and work productively. We truly have been so pleased to have DTE work with our pups, and couldn’t recommend their services more highly.

I cannot say enough good things about this training program! When Yusi started, she struggled with anxiety, fearfulness, and listening consistently. The trainers were patient, knowledgeable, and truly cared about helping her succeed. They took the time to explain everything to me and gave me the tools and confidence to continue working with her at home. Since completing training, I can definitely tell a difference in Yusi. She is more attentive, more confident, and much better at responding to commands. The improvement has made our daily life so much easier and more enjoyable. It’s clear that the trainers genuinely love what they do and are dedicated to helping both dogs and their owners. I am so grateful for everything they did for Yusi and would highly recommend them to anyone looking for professional, effective, and compassionate dog training. Thank you for helping my girl become the best version of herself! 🐾💚

We had an excellent experience with Dog Training Elite. Our German Shepherd had significant leash-pulling issues, and walks had become stressful and difficult to manage. After working with the trainers, the difference has been amazing. Not only does he now walk calmly on a leash, but he’s also much more focused around distractions. One of the most impressive things we’ve learned is the “place” command. Being able to have him settle calmly in one spot has been truly amazing and has made a huge difference in our daily life. The trainers were knowledgeable, patient, and genuinely invested in helping both our dog and our family succeed. They gave us clear instructions and practical tools that made it easy to continue the training at home. The results have exceeded our expectations, and we’re grateful for everything we’ve learned. We highly recommend Dog Training Elite to anyone looking for professional, effective dog training that delivers real results.

Dog Training Elite has done so much for my dog. Our trainer Sydney was absolutely amazing, our initial appointment I had absolutely no hope that my dog could even be half as behaved as her dogs were and I was proved totally wrong. My freshly 1 yo puppy (who i’ve only had for 4 months) has perfect recall, manners in public, walks in a perfect heal, and most importantly doesn’t react to other dogs. my goal is for my pup is to be a service dog one day, and Dog Training Elite has helped me see that is totally doable. I am so happy this is the training company I went with, couldn’t be happier and neither could my puppy.

Cannot say enough good things about Dog Training Elite! From our in home trainings with Sydney, to our group classes with Jared and Sydney, every experience has been great! We enrolled our little guy Colt to help with his reactivity to other dogs and people, and are just amazed at his progress! He is able to stay calm and let other dogs walk by him and get close without going nuts. Thank you guys for being so kind and for all your help!

Jared , Casey and the whole Dog Training Elite team are phenomenal. We came to them for help with our GSD and his reactivity issues and he's honestly a completely different dog. Jared ran a lot of our sessions and he is extremely knowledgeable and really cares about the success of each dog he trains. Scheduling was very easy and flexible. Overall, I cannot recommend DGE enough. Definitely check them out. Worth every penny.

From a person who never leaves a review on Google, I’m compelled to leave a very positive review for Dog Training Elite Upstate. Having spent many thousands of $$$$ for training my BorDoodle pup for 3 years, I wish I’d met Jared a long time ago but perhaps I had to go through all that other training to really appreciate the difference he has made for my relationship with my wizardly smart pup. Most good trainers can have a dog do things an owner is unable to accomplish. The big difference between short term and long term success is that now for the first time, as an owner, my dog is doing those things for me, not just the trainer! Jared knows the magic that happens when he trains the owner/handler, not just the dog. People are harder to train than a dog. As a side note, I’m an ‘’elderly’’ who has owned dogs all my life and never had to have professional training for any of them. They just ‘’did’’ what I taught them to do, that is until I met my match 3 yrs ago with this current pup. I highly recommend Jared and his team!

I chose Dog Training Elite TWICE! I have two very different rescue dogs with very different needs and they helped them and me learn to work together! One was abused and terrified of everything and I later adopted a rescue that lived on a chain. Jared and the team helped both of them and we continue with group walks now. The trainers are extremely supportive and great with the dogs! They document and video each day and go over it all and show you how to work with your dog. I am grateful to them for helping my dogs feel confident and successful! I also found that I am trainable. Ha ha! Dog Training Elite Upstate is a great resource for training your beloved family member.

We got a six month old puppy that had been “trained.” We thought great but she was very active and we had no idea where or how to start with an older puppy. DTE met with us and answered all million of our questions. We were able to start right away and worked with our new puppy. She learned quickly and has amazed us. She stays in our yard and stay on place. She walks well with our children and doing well with her commands. I was going crazy when we first brought her home. Now, she is a joy.

Jared and his staff made a big difference in Blazes obedience. He is happy to listen to commands. They made the training easy for Blaze and my wife and I to understand. Overall it was an excellent choice to have Blaze trained by Dog Training Elite.

We loved going thru this training! Our dog is just a house pet who needed some extra help with manners and managing excitement. We had tried training on our own, watching videos, using treats, etc. but hadn’t gotten very far. Jared such a huge help with everything! Our dog, Waylon, got so many compliments at easter dinner on his good boy manners! He is now able to do all of his favorite things without hassle like swimming in the lake without excessive barking and walking without pulling or jumping. I cannot recommend this program enough and am grateful we found such a fantastic program and trainer!
