Obedience Training from DTE

The First Step Toward Dog Agility Training in Greenville, SC

Agility is a fast-paced sport that involves guiding dogs through different obstacle courses. The best candidates for this type of training are energetic, athletic dogs with a strong drive to work and learn, such as Border Collies, Australian Shepherds, Shetland Sheepdogs, Jack Russell Terriers, and Belgian Malinois. However, any dog with enthusiasm, focus, and basic obedience training can benefit from agility exercises.

Many owners choose DTE for basic obedience before starting dog agility training in Greenville, SC. While we don’t offer competition-level training, our obedience programs help build key skills like focus, impulse control, and responsiveness.

Our trainers will work closely with you throughout the obedience program, ensuring your dog masters fundamental commands and you feel confident to continue agility training on your own.

Why Start Obedience Training Before Agility Training?

Dog Training Elite

Agility training demands focus, discipline, and responsiveness. Before tackling obstacle courses, dogs need a solid foundation in obedience to ensure they can follow commands, stay engaged, and work as a team with their handler.

Here’s how obedience training with Dog Training Elite sets dogs up for success in agility:

Agility courses can be full of distractions, including large crowds, other dogs, and loud noises. Obedience training teaches your dog to stay focused on you and respond to commands, even in high-energy environments.

Agility courses require dogs to pause and wait at key thresholds, such as the start line, and only move when directed. Obedience training reinforces patience and discipline through commands like “sit,” “heel,” and “down,” ensuring your dog stays focused and follows the rules of the sport.

Obedience training deepens trust and communication between dog and handler, making teamwork in agility training much more effective. A confident dog is more likely to take on new challenges with enthusiasm.

Before dogs can learn agility-specific commands, they must first master basic obedience. Training in focus, recall, and impulse control lays the groundwork for advanced commands like “jump,” “tunnel,” “weave,” and “climb.”

At Dog Training Elite, we don’t teach advanced agility commands, but our training makes it easier for your dog to learn and respond to agility training in the future.

If your dog has mastered basic obedience and you're interested in starting agility training on your own, understanding what obstacles to train for is the first place to start.

Here are some common agility challenges and training tips:

Jumps

Dogs must leap over hurdles at varying heights without knocking the bar down. In competitions, jumps can include single bars, double jumps, and tire jumps.

  • Training Tip: Start with low jumps and use treats or toys to guide your dog over. Gradually increase height as their confidence and ability grows.

Weave Poles

Dogs weave through a series of upright poles in a precise pattern. This is one of the most challenging agility obstacles, requiring speed, flexibility, and precise footwork.

  • Training Tip: Use a lure-and-reward method or guide your dog through the poles with a leash. Begin with wider pole spacing and narrow the gaps as your dog improves.

Tunnels

Dogs run through enclosed tunnels, which can be straight or curved. Some dogs may hesitate at first, especially if they are unfamiliar with dark or enclosed spaces.

  • Training Tip: Start with a short, straight tunnel and use treats or a favorite toy to encourage your dog through. Gradually introduce curved tunnels to increase difficulty.

A-Frame & Dog Walk

These obstacles require dogs to climb, balance, and descend elevated surfaces. The A-frame is a tall, triangular ramp, while the dog walk is a narrow, elevated plank with ramps on both ends. Both require precise foot placement and body control.

  • Training Tip: Use a leash or hand signals to guide your dog slowly up and down. Reward calm, controlled movements to prevent them from rushing or jumping off too soon.

We did a lot of research on dog trainers before landing on Dog Training Elite. We are so pleased with the team, the process, and the tools they gave us through out the whole process. We had a lot of questions during the intake process and the team was extremely helpful. As the weeks went on and we learned more about our two dogs, the staff was always there to answer any dog care related questions! They made it extremely easy to book sessions and came to our house. After 5 sessions I can confidently say both our dogs have done a 180! I look forward to continuing their training in the group classes. I can't recommend this team enough.

DTE has been an invaluable resource to our family in training our first dog. My husband and I had limited to no knowledge of how to train a dog as we did not have any pets growing up. All of the trainers at DTE are knowledgeable and do an amazing job training both my dog, and me. They explain all commands in simple terms and are approachable with additional questions. We bought the Gold packages, 5 one on one training sessions and 6 months of group training sessions. We just started our group training. Jared does a wonderful job of explaining the reason for each activity and always welcomes questions of further explanation if needed. I love that I can text the direct number with urgent questions or issues and they respond quickly. We have had our sweet puppy for only 2 months but have already seen huge improvement, and I feel more confident in my training, as well. I would confidently recommend DTE to anyone who is looking for dog training services.

We enrolled our 8month old Labrador in Dog Training Elite and it was a fantastic experience from the start, beginning with the free in home evaluation. Sydney explained how their program works, discussed all the options, and throughly answered all questions we had. We signed up for the gold package, which was 4 in home sessions and 1 public/park training session + group classes for 6/mo. Sydney worked so well with us and our dog, and our dogs taken so well to all the training techniques and exercises used. We really valued the flexibility and how accommodating DTE was with the in home sessions. I’d highly recommend DTE to anyone looking to embark on their dog training journey.

We are so proud of her and thankful for The knowledge and help Jared and Dog Training Elite bring to helping us understand and train our sweet girl in obedience. Our end goal is to train her as a Service Dog. Thank you for your guidance and patience with us! So greatful for you.

I would definitely recommend for pup training. They were always able to accommodate my schedule for training. Always on time! Day one was Information and my trainer had everything prepared and explained each week with clarity and a follow along pamphlet. Each week I met a different training getting advice and hands on training with my pup and different trainers. We even had puppy training with their own dogs adding an extra element for my pup. I am so happy with how obedient my pup has become. I wouldn’t have been able to get him to this point without them.

We absolutely LOVED working with the trainers at Dog Training Elite! We started 1-on-1 sessions when my Lab, Honey, was 16 weeks old and it was a major game changer! She went from biting all the time and being hard to manage to THE BEST girl. We worked with Sydney for most sessions, and Sydney understood Honey and gave such helpful guidance and advice. I needed just as much training as Honey, and Sydney was always so patient and encouraging. This was the best decision that I could have ever made to grow my bond and trust with Honey. I’m forever grateful for the support from this team and highly recommend working with them!

Highly recommend. Brought my pup to them who was overreactive to other dogs and they did excellent job helping her get over the hurdle. We have been able to get her back out in public and around other dogs with no problem!

Walter (my dachshund) had a lot of anxiety and listening issues. He would be all over my husband and I and very often would take things he was not supposed to have and not allow us to get them from him. He would pull on his leash and chase us out the door when we left. Since dog training elite he has gained so much confidence. He has anxiety still, but that’s part of his breed as well. He listens to both my husband and I with ease. He’s no longer chasing us out the door and immediately drops things he’s not supposed to have when we ask. He pulls far less than he used to (though he just finished training so he’s still working on that one), but far far better. He’s happier every day and so are we. We cannot recommend DTE enough and are so grateful for the tools and ch ages they have made in our lives.

I am so happy with DTE and the training they provided for my GSD Sully. They were flexible with scheduling training sessions, and catered each session to my dog and her needs. I specifically am thankful for Casey and her training skills, as she is very familiar with GSDs and was able to relate to Sully’s reactivity issues. She provided great training tips to help better Sully’s behavior and was very receptive to all questions I asked her. They provide longterm support for the owner and dog alike!

DTE has been awesome to work with! All of the trainers are very knowledgeable about training, and passionate about helping dogs and their families. I have a 4 (almost 5) year old male Dalmatian, Chipper, who is completely deaf and has been since birth. At his age, I really didn’t think training would have much of an impact but I have learned that training doesn’t only have to be for puppies. DTE has been very accommodating in incorporating hand signals for Chipper since he cannot hear verbal commands. Chipper is my best friend and never liked the idea of having to send him off to training for a few months, so DTE was a great option for training Chipper but not having to drop him off for weeks at a time. Not only have they helped Chipper, but they have helped me understand the difference between dogs being able to do “tricks” and follow “commands.” A big thanks to DTE on helping us reach our full potential!

I took a barky, crazy Cavalier King Charles in and brought home a true gentleman. Now, you don’t finish the week and you’re done. This is a process that you need to be prepared to work for continually. But think about this, you are investing in years that you will have a good dog.

I am so happy we chose to go with Dog Training Elite! We have a Doberman and wanted a training that made sense for us. Phoenix is still a puppy and we want to set her up for success as she grows. She has done very well with her training! We get compliments on how well behaved she is when we take her places. One of my favorite parts of what they offer, is the group classes. The ongoing support and reinforcement in a non judgemental environment is something that you don't find often. You can tell that all of their employees genuinely care about the pups and enjoy working with them. I would definitely recommend Dog Training Elite if you are wanting to set you and your dog up for success!

I've had a great experience with Dog Training Elite Upstate SC. My dog, Riggins, has always been an anxious guy but since we've been working with this team his confidence has grown. Investing in this program has been one of the best decisions we've made for Riggins.

Dog Training Elite Upstate has been life-changing for our family. Our dog Arthur used to be reactive and terrible to our other dog, but their training completely turned things around. He listens now, he’s calmer, and our whole home is so much happier. We’re incredibly grateful and highly recommend them!

Let me tell you, Dog Training Elite honestly feels like a gift. When I brought Annie home from Paws last year, the poor girl—somewhere around ten years old—was hacking away with kennel cough and had no clue what a leash was. At first I figured, how hard could it be to teach her myself? I tried. We struggled. The cough lingered, my patience thinned, and Annie still had that wild, confused look in her eyes. This year, I swallowed my pride and called DTE. Best move I could’ve made! Seriously, they’re lifesavers! Because of their help, Annie and I finally act like a real pack. The training isn’t complicated; it just asks for time and a little dedication. You can either drop your pup off at their place or have a trainer meet you at home. We chose the one-on-one visits, and I’m glad we did. Being right there, hands on, made the lessons stick for both of us. Any time a new question popped into my head after a session, I fired off a text and—no joke—I had an answer that same day. No waiting around till the next class, not feeling lost in between sessions. Now Annie strolls beside me like she was born for it, cough-free and confident. I can’t thank Dog Training Elite enough for turning things around for us.
