What is Behavioral Training?

Behavioral and regular obedience training serve different but equally important roles in shaping a well-behaved dog.

Obedience training teaches your dog basic commands like sit, heel, and come. This training helps your dog follow instructions in different situations and builds clear communication between you and your pet.

Behavioral training, however, goes deeper by addressing the root causes of problematic behaviors like aggression, anxiety, or excessive barking. While obedience training tells a dog what to do, behavioral training focuses on changing undesirable habits and reactions.

Combining obedience training with targeted behavioral solutions helps dogs overcome specific issues, resulting in a more balanced and adjusted pet.

Dog Training Elite, is 100% amazing! I'm amazed at the difference in my sweet little Poodle, Tinker. Tinker had issues with separation anxiety, would over react when any other dog was in sight. He would pull his leash and acted like a disobedient toddler. So much gratitude for the team at Dog Training Elite who not only helped Tinker to behave properly! But not only did they help him, they were honest, upfront, and fantastic with me and helping me before and after each class. Tinker and I have many happy years ahead!. Would recommend (and have) Dog Training Elite to anyone!

The team at Dog Training Elite are dedicated and exceptional at what they do. They helped me train my dog to Service Dog level. Recently we flew to Ecuador together. He performed perfectly. Going through security, navigating tight crowds of people, settling in on the planes. We couldn’t have done it without the help of Dog Training Elite. I highly recommend them!

My husband and I welcomed Finn (English Cream Golden) into our family last July and quickly realized that he was unlike any dog we had previously had. We have trained our previous dogs fairly easily but Finn was a bully and very contrary. Within 6 months I was ready to find him a home but was convinced he would become more manageable after the 14 month wait for neuter. I was wrong, after the neuter he was still wild, didn't listen and ate EVERYTHING! After being kicked out of two doggie day care centers in town, I was trying to contact a training center for a last ditch effort to keep him. That was how I got in touch with Kristie at dog training elite. I liked her immediately! She told me that she could provide an experience where I would love my dog. Honestly, I didn't see how but she was so genuine and positive that I would see a difference within our first training session that I had to try. We purchased the Platinum Plan, because between what we paid for Finn, and time invested it didn't make sense not to. I wanted Kristie to be there to demonstrate, show Finn, and then observe our training w Finn for hands on corrections. And ya know what.....I adore my dog. We are in week 5 training session....I can take a bath without him licking me, I can place him in the living room while I am cooking, I can have him come inside in a gentlemanly manner and he bullies no one. Gone are the days of shouting (embarrassing but true), frustration and disappointment on finding the 5th pair of glasses demolished. Kristie changed our lives and now I look forward to Finn time! Thank you!!! We are both much happier!! Money well spent, and if we ever do puppies again, we will start with this program. My family is very appreciative! Sincerely, Amy Williams

Can't say enough good things about Dog Training Elite! My 2 year old corgi, Mabel, was showing some reactive behavior and lack of proper boundaries and expectations were causing her to act out. The training was very helpful and has helped Mabel become a calmer more confident dog. Each session, the training staff would first work with Mabel to show the command and what was expected as the result before handing over the leash to allow us to get some practice in to help reinforce for both owner and pup. The group sessions have also been great because it gives us the opportunity to continue to work on the skills learned. We have gotten the opportunity to work with all of the trainers, and all are very knowledgeable and want the best for your dog.

We are a 75-year-old couple, and a few months ago we brought home our sweet little dachshund, Molly. As much as we adored her from the start, we soon realized her puppy energy was a bit more than we could handle. We needed help! That’s when we turned to Dog Training Elite of Springfield — and it was one of the best decisions we’ve ever made. From the first meeting, Kristi, Jeremy, and their wonderful staff treated us and Molly like family. They were patient, kind, and always willing to take the extra time to explain things in a way that we felt comfortable with. They clearly love what they do! After completing the two-week training program, Molly has come home transformed. She listens so much better, walks beside us without pulling, and is a lot calmer. Most importantly, we now feel confident handling her, which makes daily life so much more enjoyable. At our age, we truly appreciate having a well-mannered companion who can bring us joy without the stress— and thanks to Dog Training Elite of Springfield, that’s exactly what Molly is becoming. We can’t thank Kristi, Jeremy, and their dedicated staff enough for their care and expertise. We wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone looking for training that is not only effective, but also full of compassion. Molly is happier, and so are we! ——A grateful couple (and Molly 🐾)

I have a 6 month old French Bulldog who was impossible to handle. I’ve had Frenchies before so I knew I needed help and Dog Training Elite stepped up! My dog is now a joy to be around. She is great at home or in a crowd of people she doesn’t know. We just give her a command and she follows. She still has her happy, judg-ee, stubborn, sometimes bat crap crazy personality, but she is also calm and submissive when we need her to be. Dog Training Elite is absolutely the place to go if you want a well trained happy dog.

I am so thankful I made the choice to take my dog Armani to Dog Training Elite! His issues with dog reactivity had skyrocketed in recent months and I am beyond impressed with how much of an impact their program has had on both him and me. The staff is absolutely wonderful and made sure to take the time to really work through the issues we were having. The growth I’ve seen in my dog is something I never thought I would see and I’m beyond grateful for everyone at DTE. Now I’m able to take Armani out in public with much less fear and much more confidence!

I was amazed at the wonders they worked with our puppy. We’ve done training classes before, but this was better than anything we’ve experienced with other dogs. The collar is truly magic. It was worth the investment!

Jaxson came in disobedient, making poor choices. With kids in the house, I needed tools to have him listen immediately. I can now take walks without him lunging at big dogs. I could see the results within the first few days. Thank you dog training elite!

I have been working with my dog sugar to become a service dog at dog training elite and they have been super helpful with the whole process from puppy training to obedience and now to task training and public access. Sugar is a different dog from when she was a puppy. She is much better behaved and still is her goofy self. I highly recommend this place for anyone wanting to have a service dog but can’t afford a pre trained one and or wants to train in person.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Hey there, I’m Bella Mia—maltipoo, diva, and former queen of selective hearing. My mum signed me up for the puppy foundations camp and fast track camp because, apparently, my “sass” was getting out of hand. Well, jokes on her… because I came back even more fabulous and I actually listen now (most of the time). The trainers knew exactly how to handle a smart cookie like me—firm, fun, and totally in tune with my big perdonality. They didn’t break my spirit, they just helped me polish my princess behavior. Now I get what I want and follow the rules. Win-win. If your pup is strong-willed, clever, or just a little extra (no judgment), this place is the real deal. I’m still the boss… I just have better manners now. 🐾👑

After 3 years of training our Golden Retriever, Nugget, I decided I wanted to get him trained to be my service animal, so after a lot of searching I landed on Dog Training Elite of Springfield. I was also in school and only in town for winter breaks and summer, so Kristi sat down with me and planned out a fast track training schedule to get Nugget through each tier as long as we both worked hard and stayed focused! Prior to training with Elite, he already knew basic commands, but he needed to know the command wasn’t an option, it was a requirement! In a matter of 3 months, with a lot of work, consistency, and an awesome trainer (Kristi) Nugget successfully completed his basic training and public access training, and took his PA test in order to be certified! After a year of having Nugget as my service animal, I had a few issues to address. Kristi and Jeremy were eager to help address the problems I was facing and provided me with techniques and proper methods for command and button use. Nugget is back at work and school with me everyday! I am beyond pleased with Springfield’s Dog Training Elite Program and I will continue to recommend them! I know the cost is a hard pill to swallow but I promise that if you listen to Kristi and Jeremy, you put the time AND effort in and stay consistent with your dog, you will be beyond happy! 10 out of 10!

We brought our 75-pound airedale puppy for the two week intensive training and can confirm he was a truly special and stubborn boy! Even after just a week of daily work we had friends and family comment on his noticeable difference and improvement - and we saw it too. We are now able to walk both our dogs at the same time, don’t have to deal with him jumping, and are much more confident in our boy behaving. We are so grateful for the help and guidance - Artie is much better for it!!

Regarding Ellie:  We received a 13 month old puppy a month ago and immediately fell in love with her sweet temperament! However, each passing day that we had her, it became evident that she had no training and knew few boundaries. As a retired couple and wanting to take Ellie everywhere we go, we quickly saw a need to enroll her into an obedience training program. After careful consideration, we met with Kristi at Dog Training Elite (DTE). She gave detailed information concerning her program selections — but more importantly to us, her dogs demonstrated the results. We sat in amazement! We ended up enrolling Ellie into the Platinum 2 week doggie day camp program. Six days into the training has already changed our lives forever!! We are so excited about the progress Ellie has been making—listening and following commands! Our investment has more than paid for itself!! We can’t wait to see what’s the next 4 days will bring! Kristi’s team: Jeremy, Amber and McKenzie are so knowledgeable, kind, caring, patient and stern-but loving! This team sets us up for nothing but success! Each day at pick up time, McKenzie shows us how to support Ellie with daily homework. The commands of come, sit, off, quiet and place are enforced and then reinforced! We are very pleased with our choice of DTE and highly recommend them to you! Thank you DTE team!! Terry & Terri Fredrick

Dog Training Elite with Kristi is hands-down the best decision I’ve made for my Cane Corso, Ronin. After weeks of research, I picked them, and they exceeded every expectation. Kristi is incredible with dogs and their humans: she breaks each drill down, shows you exactly how to reinforce it at home, and keeps every session upbeat. Ronin transformed from a 130-pound bull in a china shop to a calm, obedient partner who nails sit, down, place, heel, and off-leash recall—even around heavy distractions. Kristi’s steady, confident style had him focused from day one, and her genuine love for the dogs shows in how fast they progress. The best part? Training doesn’t end after the last private lesson. Your membership is for your dog’s entire life. We still attend the weekly group classes, they’re fantastic for sharpening skills and socializing with other dogs. If at any point I need a tune-up or advice, Kristi is a call away and happy to guide us, no extra charge. If you want results that last and a trainer who’s truly in it for the long haul, stop searching. Dog Training Elite and Kristi are the real deal—five stars all the way.

I cannot say enough great things about Kristi and the staff at Dog Training Elite! I brought my dog in for training due to having some reactive tendencies around other dogs at the dog park and home. He is not an aggressive dog, but he didn't know how to control his emotions. Since starting training with Kristi, my dog has become significantly calmer and is now able to be around other dogs without lunging, barking, or pulling. I love taking my dog to breweries, and I can happily do that without worrying if he will go after a person or a dog. I know he will continue to make progress with other dogs, but he has a great foundation to continue to build upon!

We LOVE DTE Springfield and the entire team!! We adopted Maverick, a German Shepherd mix about 6 months ago from the Humane Society with a very traumatic background. Maverick was a very anxious, trauma-ridden, aggressive, defiant dog. He lunged at cats, people, barked and whined 24/7, nipped and tried to bite people. He had absolutely no structure and let us know he thought HE was the boss! We got Mav into DTE the next week after having him home and he made a complete turn around after session 2 or 3. Although at times it was challenging to get through his hard head, it was so incredible to watch. He even seemed to love learning and working our new tricks. With their help, he stopped being reactive to our cats and other dogs, as well as people. He started listening and gained SO MUCH confidence in himself. He is not an angry dog anymore; in fact he is now energetic and smiley, the happiest, sweetest dog. He is such an amazing member of our family and absolutely LOVES his sister, Harley, who is also trained by DTE. We can never thank you enough!

Behavior Training Techniques

At DTE, we use proven techniques to encourage lasting behavior changes in dogs.

Here’s how we do it.

We use a clicker to mark the exact moment your dog performs the correct behavior. The click signals a coming reward and helps your dog learn which actions are worth repeating.
Similar to clicker training, this method uses a specific word or phrase like "yes" or "good" to mark the behavior. This verbal cue reinforces positive behavior and strengthens the communication between you and your dog.
By demonstrating correct behaviors with a "model" dog, other dogs in the group learn through observation. This method taps into dogs' natural tendency to imitate, making it easier for them to adopt behaviors.
Building a strong bond between dog and owner is key. We build trust and understand your dog's needs to create a cooperative training environment where your dog is more likely to respond positively.
A stick or specific spot is used to guide your dog to the desired behavior, encouraging them to touch or follow the target. Once they succeed, we reinforce the action with a reward. This technique is ideal for teaching complex behaviors and improving focus.

Classical Conditioning, or the Pavlovian Model

Classical conditioning, pioneered by Russian physiologist Ivan Pavlov's work, is a fundamental principle in dog training. Pavlov’s study showed dogs could learn to associate a neutral stimulus, like a bell, with food, prompting them to respond to the bell alone.

At Dog Training Elite, we apply this principle in our behavioral training programs. We pair a command with two stimuli: a clicker (or marker word) and a reward like a treat or praise. The clicker signals the correct behavior, and the reward reinforces it. This method helps dogs quickly understand what’s expected and encourages them to repeat desired behaviors.

Unlike punishment-based methods, classical conditioning shapes behavior effectively and creates a well-adjusted, happy dog.
