Service Dog Training FAQs

Service dogs are dogs that have been specially trained to assist their handler or owner with specific tasks. Dog Training Elite in Las Vegas trains dogs to assist people with epilepsy, diabetes, PTSD, autism, and various mental illnesses.

Service dogs are for any individual dealing with a disability that lowers their quality of life. For example, someone who suffers from epilepsy may avoid going out in public due to a fear of falling or other consequences related to seizures. This may inhibit their independence and sense of well-being.

In addition to improving the lives of individuals, service dogs can bring a sense of security to families, such as families with autistic children. Children with autism can often feel isolated and a service dog becomes a 24/7 companion to share experiences with, connect with and love. They can also help children reintegrate into society and connect with others.

Families who have children with autism experience a decrease in stress as they are more able to engage socially in public settings and experience less anxiety at home. A service dog increases safety and has a calming presence that can minimize emotional outbursts, allowing the family to feel more secure and a child with autism to better participate in family activities.

Service dogs are for all individuals or families that are experiencing a decrease in quality of life due to disability.

Service dog training begins with puppies. Dog Training Elite in Las Vegas’s service puppy training program works with breeders to adopt puppies that are fully obedience trained by six months and are ready to undergo extensive socialization and additional training to ensure they are well-suited for service and therapy needs.

Then, Dog Training Elite in Las Vegas places puppies with families or individuals. Further specialized service training takes place alongside the new handler. It generally takes 1-2 years for a service dog to become fully trained.

Service dog training focuses on two main areas: public access behaviors, and how to “do work or perform tasks” that assist with a disability.

Public access behaviors refer to how a service dog acts in public - well-trained service dogs remain calm in public situations and in turn help their handlers to stay calm, and are attuned to any other handler needs.

As for “do work or perform tasks,” the ADA requires that service dogs be trained to take a specific action when needed to assist the person with a disability.

For example, to assist handlers with PTSD, Dog Training Elite in Las Vegas trains dogs to de-escalate anxiety, wake handlers experiencing night terrors, and so on.

The ADA does not require special certification for service animals. State and local government agencies, businesses and non-profit organizations may not require documentation, such as proof that the animal has been certified, trained or licensed as a service animal, as a condition for entry. Mandatory registration of service animals in the city of residence is also not permissible under the ADA.

However, service animals are not exempt from local animal control or public health requirements, such as vaccinations, or local dog licensing and registration requirements.

Dog Training Elite in Las Vegas sets itself apart from other dog training methods by focusing on positive reinforcement with a personalized, in-home approach. This method empowers owners and handlers to be an integral part of the process for sustained dog obedience and service training. For service dogs especially, it is important that handlers be present and involved every step of the way.

The positive reinforcement approach, also referred to as “Classical Conditioning” or the “Pavlovian” model has shown to be more effective with longer lasting results than any other training method.

Dog Training Elite in Las Vegas does not use punishments or shock collars to break bad habits. Instead, Dog Training Elite in Las Vegas pairs positive reinforcement training with a vibration electronic collar. An electronic collar is not a shock collar and does not harm the dog. It is used to gain the dog’s attention, similar to a tug on a leash. It is never used as a punishment for bad behavior.

Another unique aspect of training with Dog Training Elite in Las Vegas is that while most dog training programs train dogs at their own facilities, Dog Training Elite in Las Vegas specializes in in-home training, customizing training to the dog, its owners and its environment for long-lasting success.

Positive Reinforcement Training

Training takes time, commitment and balance and Dog Training Elite in Las Vegas is there every step of the way. With Dog Training Elite in Las Vegas, dogs will learn the highest level of obedience, even in the face of the toughest level of distractions. The positive-reinforcement method focuses on encouraging good behavior through ongoing praise, creating a dog that wants to please from the inside out and creating deep-rooted, sustained obedience as well as a strong bond between dog and owner.

Our Balanced Theory

We base our training around the "Classical Conditioning" model (a.k.a. "Pavlovian" or "respondent conditioning"). This includes developing conditioned or automatic reflexes to commands. In its simplest form (after proper conditioning), when the owner says "sit," the dog automatically sits without thinking about it. Our unique techniques ensure our program is a success no matter what behavior we encounter.

Dog Training Elite in Las Vegas is the top company near you that uses professional positive dog training methods.

I have worked with several trainers in the valley, but Nick at Dog Training Elite has been the best. I chose DTE for my service dog training after researching several other options within Las Vegas. I am so happy with the results. Wherever I take my dog, I am always getting compliments on how well behaved she is, and I'm asked if I had her trained at a facility. I am constantly recommending Dog Training Elite and cannot say enough praises about the program. Nick is extremely patient with both you as the owner and your dog. Keep in mind, you get what you put into the program. Nick will make sure you and your dog know the basics and how the task should look before he leaves but it's on the owner to keep working with the dog between sessions. Nick is very responsive if you have questions outside of your training sessions as well. I highly recommend Nick with Dog Training Elite. I will not trust any other trainer in the valley in the future. Customer for life.

I met Nick through the Malinois Foundation . It’s a non-profit organization that connects veterans like myself with service dogs and dog trainers. I’ve known Nick about a year now and he helped me train and certified my service dog Roxy. She is a one year old golden retriever. Nick is nothing short of outstanding. He is courteous , kind, personable and punctual at all our training sessions. We had approximately 14 one on one sessions as well as weekly group sessions. It’s always a professional atmosphere and always a safe & healthy training environment for our animals. I couldn’t recommend Nick and DTE more. 6 stars.

We have multiple dogs and it is important that they are well behaved for us and our houseguests/family/friends. We worked on the introduction of our newest pup to our pack. Can't say enough good things about Nick and his natural skill with dogs. My wife and I got a wirehaired pointing griffon bird dog to join our family. We soon found out that bird dog puppies are wound like 8 day clocks! After some work with Nick, our pup Stu is such a little gentleman. He is so much better on the leash, is no longer jumping on strangers, and we are making great progress on his barking. Thank you Nick for your help with Stu.

I thought my dog would never get along with other dogs or stop barking! What can I say about Dog Training Elite SW Las Vegas .....Nick is the freaking bomb! My pitbull, Damian, was a nightmare on the leash, aggressive towards other dogs and barked at a fart in the wind. It got to the point that our neighbors would see us coming and turn and go the other way. We couldn't take him anywhere. Now it's totally different. After training with Nick, we frequently take Damian out to eat, on walks downtown main street, and to Home Depot. When I stop walking, he sits next to me. We get compliments from people on his good behavior every time. Our friends and neighbors are amazed at the progress our dog has made. Even though we are leaving where Nick left off, he has set a much needed foundation. I definitely would recommend Nick at Dog Training Elite SW Las Vegas over and over.

I am incredibly grateful for Nick that helped train my son’s service dog. He went above and beyond, first understanding my son’s anxiety and triggers. The tailored approach he came up with not only produced a well-trained service dog but also provided immense comfort and support to my child. This service has made a significant positive impact on our lives. Highly recommended for their compassion and expertise.

Dog Training Elite SW Las Vegas exceeded my expectations. Nick, the trainer, employed effective techniques that significantly reduced my dog's excessive barking. I appreciate his expertise in tackling this specific behavioral concern, making the overall experience worthwhile. My neighbors say thank you as well!

When we brought our 8 week old English lab pups home I knew I wanted professional help with training. Nick has gone above and beyond our expectations. We worked hard and practiced his lessons in between sessions. The girls learned quickly and are eager to please. The additional group classes have been hugely advantageous to socialize them and reinforce skills. Nick is a gold star trainer. Patient, calm, persistent. But you have to do the work if you want results! We are now considering service training. With Nick's expertise I have no doubt our dogs will make exceptional service animals. Thank you Nick!

Nick was amazing with my dog. She was shy at first and took some warming up. Wasn’t long before she was excited to see him and get to work weekly. She is well behaved and knows when it’s time to work (certified service dog) and when she can be herself. She is amazing and so loving. I had no idea she could be so focused. I get so many compliments on how well behaved she is. You guys are awesome.

My puppy husky/pit mix Milo loved his training sessions. Both with Nick and Bryanna. They treated him as if he was their own and made him and myself feel very comfortable to be around. We were lucky enough to have some training time with their beautiful puppy Kaden as well. Milo was a big jumper and commands weren’t his strong suit. After a couple of training weeks with them I now feel safe having him at dog parks and even having him off leash when we go for his regular walks. I couldn’t thank them enough for the patients they had with Milo.

We are so happy with the training we are getting with Dog Training Elite Southwest LV! Our puppy has become calmer and more disciplined as we go through the process, and he really loves to practice the commands we learn. Nick is patient with our pup and committed to making sure he learns the commands accurately. I would absolutely recommend them for anyone with a new puppy or even an older dog who needs to learn. Thanks so much!

We worked with Nick Smith and his wife Bry, both of whom were easy and friendly to work with. Our pup Damian is a high energy pit bull who had trouble jumping up. After just a few sessions with Elite he understands boundaries better and we understand how to communicate effectively with him. Thank you for all of your efforts Nick and Bry, we will be recommending you in the future.

Nick has done wonders for my pup! He’s knowledgeable, patient, responsive & easy to work with. Training is based on praise treatment, not discipline. Commands are not only demonstrated but fully explained, which eases my mind and makes the training process easier for me to understand & implement with Piper. I highly recommend reaching out to Nick for your training needs! Pictured: Piper in her place(s) ☺️
