What is a Therapy Dog?

A therapy dog is trained to provide emotional support and comfort to people in need, often visiting hospitals, nursing homes, and schools. These dogs must be friendly with strangers, able to handle high levels of distraction, and understand personal boundaries like not jumping, licking, or mouthing. With proper training, therapy dogs can bring joy and emotional relief to those they interact with, offering companionship in stressful environments.

At Dog Training Elite, we specialize in therapy dog training in Clarksville, TN, helping dogs develop the temperament and skills needed to provide emotional support and comfort in a variety of settings. How Does a Dog Become a Therapy Dog?

While the companionship your dog brings you may inspire you to share that with others, not every dog is suited to be a therapy animal. Beyond a friendly, loving personality, several important qualifications must be met for a dog to be considered for therapy work:

  • Age: Puppies are typically too energetic and lack the focus to be therapy dogs.
  • Obedience: A therapy dog must follow commands reliably. Dogs that have completed obedience training with Dog Training Elite have the solid foundation needed to begin therapy dog training.
  • Social Skills: Therapy dogs need to naturally enjoy meeting new people and must handle being petted and approached by strangers without anxiety. Their ability to remain calm and friendly, even in unfamiliar situations, ensures they can provide emotional support to those they interact with.

I can’t say enough good things about Dog Training Elite or our trainer, Amber. After a few too many reactive moments with Mochi - and one nightmare day on a trail where she lunged at dog after dog - I knew I needed help. Dog Training Elite responded quickly and scheduled a consultation, and I felt immediate trust in their team after Reina’s home visit. Because we’re moving soon, I was worried we wouldn’t have enough time. Amber and Reina reassured me and helped fast-track our training - and the results have been incredible. After just two months, Mochi is a completely different dog. I used to dread taking her out in public or on hikes, but now she can walk a busy trail in a perfect heel, hold a sit or down as dogs pass by, and even stay in her given command when other dogs get into her space - something that would have caused her to lunge before. To Amber and the team - I truly cannot thank you enough for getting us to a point where going out together is actually fun again. To anyone reading this - if you’re on the fence about training or which company to choose, this is your sign - go with Dog Training Elite. You won’t regret it.

I have been so happy with Dog Training Elite Clarksville. Each trainer has been excellent: Regina, Amber, and Austin. My puppy gets excited to see them. The e-collar has really helped Riley make the right choice making life more harmonious. It's more of a nudge. It, of course, is taking follow through at home, but the combined efforts will ingrain the behavior I am looking for. My puppy is the happiest girl ever. I am learning good ideas and how to work better with Riley than I would on my own. Had I not hired DTEC I would've been a lot more frustrated and had a bratty puppy. It was the right decision for us.

Love this service! Debated on training my dog for months, truly saw the problem when her behaviors started hurting my grandparents. Called and got a trainer to visit the same week! I once would have never brought my dog to Lowe’s; now she’s able to walk through the airport with me. I get compliments on how behaved she is now. I paid for obedience classes, so far; I have learned how to train her with help from the professionals. This was a better choice than sending her to a school and not getting to learn how to maintain the obedience myself. The team has managed well with my work schedule to allow me time to choose when training sessions are; the convenience of coming to my home to train has been a blessing. Cannot describe how thankful I am for the team in training Wynonna so well! Included a photo of her aggressively playing before Dog Training Elite and a photo of her in the airport after Dog Training Elite to show the difference.

They were absolutely amazing. Our dog was extremely difficult to walk especially when she saw other dogs. Also, she was an extremely anxious pup. After working with Dog Training Elite, specifically Amber, she is super easy to walk and is much less anxious

Loving our experience with Amber. She has been very consistent and ensuring we have the tools we need to train our Aussie and have the knowledge for life long education path for future pets. We start our group training soon and I have no doubt the experience will continue to be great! Would 10/10 recommend Dog Training Elite. The ratings they have are a true testament to the experience and people you meet along the way. (Our dogs understanding the "place" command in the photo attached).

I was very impressed from our very first meeting. Our Shepherd, Warden, was an extreme case that developed overnight, and when I reached out to schedule a consultation, they made it happen quickly. From the start, it was clear that Reina would be the perfect trainer for a dog with such a strong personality. In just six weeks, Warden has come SO far. I highly recommend Reina—she truly knows what she’s doing and tailors her training to each dog’s individual personality and needs.

Our experience with Dog Training Elite Clarksville has been absolutely incredible! Reina has been amazing to work with — her patience, knowledge, and dedication have made such a difference for our 7-month-old Frankie. The one-on-one obedience sessions have helped Frankie become more focused and well-mannered, and we’ve learned so much as owners too. We’re so grateful for the progress so far and can’t wait to continue this journey as Frankie works towards becoming a service dog. If you’re looking for professional, caring, and effective training, we highly recommend Reina and the team at Dog Training Elite Clarksville. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I cannot say enough wonderful things about Dog Training Elite Clarksville and our amazing trainer, Graci! From the first session, she made both me and my dog Rocco feel completely comfortable. She is so sweet, patient, and genuinely cares about the dogs and their owners. Graci explains every step in a way that’s easy to understand, and she always makes training fun instead of stressful. Rocco absolutely loves her, and I can already see such a huge improvement in his behavior and confidence. She celebrates every win with us and keeps me feeling supported through the entire process. If you’re looking for a trainer who truly goes above and beyond, ask for Graci. She has been a blessing to me and Rocco, and I’m so grateful for her kindness and skill. Highly recommend! 🐾💛

I I have really enjoyed working and learning from dog training, elite Clarksvill. Our big boy, tank, has transformed from a rambunctious, strong, wheeled Rottweiler puppy who wanted to run the house into a controllable, personality, driven dog that will offer a sit or down position for a treat. The education provided on how to train our specific dog was incredibly helpful. At first, we were concerned about stopping tank from jumping on family members when greeting them and from becoming overly excited and aggressive towards anyone on the trampoline. Thanks to our trainer, Rena, and her consistent support and knowledge of our dog, we were able to correct these behaviors within just a week. I never thought we would be able to take Tank anywhere, but within three months, he confidently walked through Governor Square, Mall like a champ. He even visited Bath & body Works to sniff the fall scents and I don’t think anyone even realized he was there. He received occasional compliments like he’s so pretty and can I pet him but the biggest compliment we receive was when someone took him for a service dog. Just to add, yes, he did enjoy a pup cup as a special treat. I highly recommend dog training elite to anyone who needs assistance or simply wants to learn how to train their fur baby.

Thank you so much to Dog Training Elite for helping me out with my crazy Randy. He was always very reactive towards men that would come into my apartment. After training, he seems way more comfortable with people coming to visit and more confident and secure in himself. I love my one on one sessions and the group class structure! Thank you!!

Reina and her team are awesome! Millie has came so far in only a few short months. I went from not being able to walk her down the street without her barking to being able to walk her around the mall, dog park, etc with no issues. I highly recommend!

I’ve never been so pleased with the improvement and my bound with my little girl. The crew at Dog Training Elite in Clarksville really helped me and my dog. They were able to get results for us even on day one. Basic commands were simple enough and they were able to show me how to get my puppy to sit, stay, and place on the very first session. Now I can even drop my leash and run away with her favorite toy and she won’t move a muscle. Walks are so enjoyable, not worrying if she will jump on someone. They were just so professional and took into consideration the nature of what I wanted my canine to be able to do. Dog Training Elite was able to meet all of my goals but took me and my dog training to a whole different level that I never thought possible. They are a must for anyone who wants to train their canine companions! Worth every penny in my book. I am looking forward to the future with Dog Training Elite.

Benefits of Therapy Dogs

Therapy dogs have a profound impact on individuals’ emotional and physical well-being. Research demonstrates that therapy dogs can improve a patient's mood, reduce stress, and even lower pain levels during hospital stays or medical treatments. Their calming presence provides comfort and relief in challenging moments.

Children, in particular, often respond well to therapy dogs. The companionship and playful interaction of a therapy dog can motivate children to engage more fully in treatments, helping them overcome fear or reluctance. With a therapy dog by their side, children tend to feel more optimistic and less anxious.

Beyond medical settings, therapy dogs also foster social interaction, especially in autism and mental health communities. These dogs offer non-judgmental companionship and serve as a bridge for individuals who may struggle with social connections. By reducing feelings of loneliness and anxiety, therapy dogs offer their owners comfort and companionship that enhances the overall quality of life.

ESA vs. Therapy vs. Service Animals

What's the Difference?

Animals that provide assistance and companionship can be classified into three main groups: service animals, emotional support animals (ESAs), and therapy animals. Each has different responsibilities, training requirements, and legal protections. Knowing the differences can help you choose the right type of support for a disability, emotional needs, or therapy purposes.

Here are the defining features of each type:

Service animals are trained to help individuals by performing tasks that meet their specific needs, such as:

  • Redirecting attention when an individual is beginning to feel overstimulated
  • Reminding owners to take medication
  • Waking someone who is having a nightmare

Service dogs are highly valued in the mental health and disability community and are protected under ADA laws, allowing them to accompany their owners anywhere. At DTE, we provide specialized training for service dogs that assist individuals with autism, diabetes, and PTSD.

The key difference between ESAs, therapy dogs, and service dogs is that service animals are protected by the Americans with Disabilities Act. This means they are allowed to go anywhere their owner goes. ESAs and therapy dogs do not have the same protections as service dogs, and public places can set their own rules about allowing them.

ESAs are prescribed by licensed mental health professionals to help individuals with mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression. These animals provide emotional support simply by being a comforting presence. Unlike service dogs, ESAs are not trained to perform specific tasks related to their owner's condition.

ESAs can be of any breed or age, and while they do not require the same level of training as service dogs, many owners choose to seek additional training. This can help strengthen the bond between the owner and the animal and improve the ESA's ability to provide consistent emotional support in different situations.

Therapy animals provide comfort and emotional support to individuals in need. They are not trained to assist a single person but are instead taught to be well-behaved and sociable around various groups of people. These animals help reduce stress, anxiety, and loneliness for those they visit.

Unlike service animals, therapy animals are not required to perform specific tasks. Their calming presence is what makes them valuable in therapeutic programs.
