Service Dog Training FAQs

Service dogs are dogs that have been specially trained to assist their handler or owner with specific tasks. Dog Training Elite of the NC Triangle trains dogs to assist people with epilepsy, diabetes, PTSD, autism, and various mental illnesses.

Service dogs are for any individual dealing with a disability that lowers their quality of life. For example, someone who suffers from epilepsy may avoid going out in public due to a fear of falling or other consequences related to seizures. This may inhibit their independence and sense of well-being.

In addition to improving the lives of individuals, service dogs can bring a sense of security to families, such as families with autistic children. Children with autism can often feel isolated and a service dog becomes a 24/7 companion to share experiences with, connect with and love. They can also help children reintegrate into society and connect with others.

Families who have children with autism experience a decrease in stress as they are more able to engage socially in public settings and experience less anxiety at home. A service dog increases safety and has a calming presence that can minimize emotional outbursts, allowing the family to feel more secure and a child with autism to better participate in family activities.

Service dogs are for all individuals or families that are experiencing a decrease in quality of life due to disability.

Service dog training begins with puppies. Dog Training Elite of the NC Triangle’s service puppy training program works with breeders to adopt puppies that are fully obedience trained by six months and are ready to undergo extensive socialization and additional training to ensure they are well-suited for service and therapy needs.

Then, Dog Training Elite of the NC Triangle places puppies with families or individuals. Further specialized service training takes place alongside the new handler. It generally takes 1-2 years for a service dog to become fully trained.

Service dog training focuses on two main areas: public access behaviors, and how to “do work or perform tasks” that assist with a disability.

Public access behaviors refer to how a service dog acts in public - well-trained service dogs remain calm in public situations and in turn help their handlers to stay calm, and are attuned to any other handler needs.

As for “do work or perform tasks,” the ADA requires that service dogs be trained to take a specific action when needed to assist the person with a disability.

For example, to assist handlers with PTSD, Dog Training Elite of the NC Triangle trains dogs to de-escalate anxiety, wake handlers experiencing night terrors, and so on.

The ADA does not require special certification for service animals. State and local government agencies, businesses and non-profit organizations may not require documentation, such as proof that the animal has been certified, trained or licensed as a service animal, as a condition for entry. Mandatory registration of service animals in the city of residence is also not permissible under the ADA.

However, service animals are not exempt from local animal control or public health requirements, such as vaccinations, or local dog licensing and registration requirements.

Dog Training Elite of the NC Triangle sets itself apart from other dog training methods by focusing on positive reinforcement with a personalized, in-home approach. This method empowers owners and handlers to be an integral part of the process for sustained dog obedience and service training. For service dogs especially, it is important that handlers be present and involved every step of the way.

The positive reinforcement approach, also referred to as “Classical Conditioning” or the “Pavlovian” model has shown to be more effective with longer lasting results than any other training method.

Dog Training Elite of the NC Triangle does not use punishments or shock collars to break bad habits. Instead, Dog Training Elite of the NC Triangle pairs positive reinforcement training with a vibration electronic collar. An electronic collar is not a shock collar and does not harm the dog. It is used to gain the dog’s attention, similar to a tug on a leash. It is never used as a punishment for bad behavior.

Another unique aspect of training with Dog Training Elite of the NC Triangle is that while most dog training programs train dogs at their own facilities, Dog Training Elite of the NC Triangle specializes in in-home training, customizing training to the dog, its owners and its environment for long-lasting success.

Positive Reinforcement Training

Training takes time, commitment and balance and Dog Training Elite of the NC Triangle is there every step of the way. With Dog Training Elite of the NC Triangle, dogs will learn the highest level of obedience, even in the face of the toughest level of distractions. The positive-reinforcement method focuses on encouraging good behavior through ongoing praise, creating a dog that wants to please from the inside out and creating deep-rooted, sustained obedience as well as a strong bond between dog and owner.

Our Balanced Theory

We base our training around the "Classical Conditioning" model (a.k.a. "Pavlovian" or "respondent conditioning"). This includes developing conditioned or automatic reflexes to commands. In its simplest form (after proper conditioning), when the owner says "sit," the dog automatically sits without thinking about it. Our unique techniques ensure our program is a success no matter what behavior we encounter.

I decided to get a goldendoodle a year ago and knew I wanted to work with someone who would not only train her but also welcome her as part of their pack. I found that in Dog Training Elite Charlotte. Within one day of puppy training she was learning puppy basics. When she came home she had so much more confidence and listened and used her basic commands. Later, she attended additional training and gained more confidence and had amazing manners. She walked on her leash and followed the heel command. She mastered her place command, her come command and so many other necessary commands for a well mannered dog. I still ensure she gets lots of practice by taking her to group classes. I could not recommend DTE more. They are the ONLY trainers I would trust with my Winnie girl. A huge thank you for your professionalism and your love of your clients (both human and dogs). I look forward to many more years of partnership with DTE.

After only 2 training sessions, we had our first real challenge (1 of 2 main reasons I made the call in the first place): a contractor was coming into our home. Last time I had him here, I brought my dog to a doggy day care because the situation is so stressful (for both of us!) and she doesn't stop barking (so it's hard to carry on a conversation). Today, he rang the bell and we couldn't even find her. (That in itself is huge because...doorbells.) She eventually came out (very quietly), sniffed, and gave one little bark and a small growl. We told her quiet and she went back to her hiding spot. This is huge. She normally runs and "attacks" as soon as she realizes there is someone new in the house and doesn't stop barking until they leave. Thank you!! Best investment ever.

Thanks to Neal and his team for helping our 6 yr old Puggles learn some manners for our new full time RV lifestyle. 5 yrs of growing up with invisible fence and back yard enclosure, our boys needed to learn obedience with distractions and how to share dog parks. We are so pleased with the results. Thanks again! Larry & Debbie Daniels Leo & Reggie 🐶🐶

Our Staffie had some major Aggression and obedience issues; with him already being 5 years old and with recently bringing a newborn home, we were nervous and knew we needed help correcting our dogs bad behavior. A friend highly recommended Dog Training Elite and we could not be more grateful. We have learned how to fix the hierarchy in our family pack as well as how to communicate better with our Staffie and now feel like we are in control. We highly recommend Dog Training Elite to any one needing help with aggression or anxiety to basic obedience. The trainers are excellent and put your mind at ease when you are nervous in those first few appointments. The trainers are sure to make sure all of your concerns are addressed and teach you the tools to achieve success with your dog. We will be putting our second dog into obedience training next and we are very excited. Thank you Dog Training Elite!!!

We sent our golden doodle puppy Blue to Elite Dog training for their 9 day training program and it worked wonders for him! Before he went to training we didn’t know how to control his puppy energy. He was biting us all, including our children. When he came home he still had his playful puppy energy, but we now have the resources to control the behavior we don’t want. He is calmer, knows his commands and listens to us. He’s only been home a few days, but we’ve already had several people comment on his good behavior. For example, when I took him to the vet, I said “place” and Blue got on the scale and calmly sat down to be weighed. Everyone in the waiting room was amazed that a 4 month old puppy had such self-control. I had Blue outside in the driveway with me (unleashed) when a delivery driver approached with a package. I told Blue to “sit” and he stayed by my side while the delivery driver dropped off the package- no jumping, no barking, no chasing. While Blue was at training we received a video each day outlining what he was working on. This was helpful not only for teaching us the commands he will know, but also gave us peace of mind that Blue was happy and well taken care of there. I highly recommend this training program!

We were on the verge of putting our dog down due to multiple instances with aggression and not wanting to have another family have the same problem. We were in tears for days about what to do. Then I got a recommendation from a friend to check out DTE and they offered a free consultation and so we decided to check it out. Evan and Ryan came over and he came in and talked to us and observed our yorkie, Chewie. After talking with us he asked if we wanted to go see his dog in the truck and see what the Training has done for his dog. I was floored by the obedience and submissiveness of his dog Echo. But was still unsure it would work for my dog and be worth the money. Evan told us to think about it and see if it was a good fit for us. No pressure from it at all but the confidence he has that it would help. Is what ended up selling us. So we signed up and started our training and our experience with our dog changed overnight. He got knocked down on the food chain from thinking he was large and in charge to realizing we were the owners and he needs to listen to everyone in our family. No matter the age. It has been a game changer for us and our family. We had never had a dog before and were lost at what to do and they helped us not only learn, but understand and implement. We had issues come up along the way and the owner came over immediately that day to address it and help correct his behavior and help us know what to do. The trainers, Ryan & Deidre, were always very good at explaining what they were doing, how the dog reacts, why he behaved or was acting a certain way to the training and they were gentle, kind, and patient during the whole process. I would recommend Dog Training Elite to anyone looking for help with their dog. It is a game changer for me and my family and I know it will be for you too. It was worth every dime and we are only through the inhome training. I look forward to continuing with it all in the group lessons too for the next 12 group lessons. So glad we found them and the confidence and help this team brought us was phenomenal. Highly recommend.

I own a year-old wire terrier (or Terror) mix, and I love her to pieces. However, my husband has had a stroke and needed our dog to be a lot calmer...and I was super-hesitant about any trainer being NICE enough to my dog, my little blond-haired Winnie. Well, I agreed to a home evaluation and was instantly impressed with both Evan and Ryan. You could tell they knew dogs well, and Winnie fell in love with them both, so I signed up and couldn't be more grateful. I loved the six visits to my home, and Winnie has learned so much about obeying simple commands, and she still loves both me and my husband. It's been a win-win situation all around.

I waited for over 3 years on multiple service dog wait lists before I found Dog Training Elite (DTE). I had no idea that I could have my own service dog, trained in my home, in a matter of weeks! Amanda is an AMAZING trainer. I thought I knew a lot about dogs until I met her. She trains not only the dog, but the person handling the dog as well. DTE is a "no brainer" if you need a service dog (or just a well mannered dog). With DTE and Amanda, I am lucky to have not only a best friend (my dog, Titus), but I also made new friends at the weekly training events. DTE and Titus brought me back into society from nearly a decade of being a hermit. I can't say enough great things about DTE, Amanda and Whitley. Thank you all for giving me my life back.
