Therapy Dog Training in Orlando, FL

What is a Therapy Dog?

A therapy dog is trained to provide emotional support and comfort to people in need, often visiting hospitals, nursing homes, and schools. These dogs must be friendly with strangers, able to handle high levels of distraction, and understand personal boundaries like not jumping, licking, or mouthing. With proper training, therapy dogs can bring joy and emotional relief to those they interact with, offering companionship in stressful environments.

At Dog Training Elite, we specialize in therapy dog training in Orlando, FL, helping dogs develop the temperament and skills needed to provide emotional support and comfort in a variety of settings. Our customized programs are designed to guide you and your dog through the certification process with compassion and professionalism. Whether your goal is to visit hospitals, schools, or community centers, we ensure your dog is well-prepared to offer calm, dependable companionship to those in need. With our expert training methods, your dog can become a confident and trusted therapy companion in the Orlando community.

How Does a Dog Become a Therapy Dog?

While the companionship your dog brings you may inspire you to share that with others, not every dog is suited to be a therapy animal. Beyond a friendly, loving personality, several important qualifications must be met for a dog to be considered for therapy work:

  • Age: Puppies are typically too energetic and lack the focus to be therapy dogs.
  • Obedience: A therapy dog must follow commands reliably. Dogs that have completed obedience training with Dog Training Elite have the solid foundation needed to begin therapy dog training.
  • Social Skills: Therapy dogs need to naturally enjoy meeting new people and must handle being petted and approached by strangers without anxiety. Their ability to remain calm and friendly, even in unfamiliar situations, ensures they can provide emotional support to those they interact with.

Today we had a lesson at the Training Site and it was really interesting to see how my dog behaved around other dogs doing the same training. If you’re not sure if your doing the training correctly, just asked the staff. They know your dog well and are super friendly.

Our experience with Dog Training Elite Orlando has been incredible. Eros started in the Platinum program and now we are continuing with the Service Dog program, and we have truly seen an impressive transformation in his behavior, obedience, and confidence. What makes this place special is the quality and dedication of their trainers. Chelsea, Cheyenne, Logan, and Emily have been absolutely wonderful. They are always patient, professional, and it’s clear that they truly love what they do. They have guided us step by step and are always willing to answer questions and help us improve as handlers. The training doesn’t focus only on the dog; they also teach the owner how to properly work with their dog to maintain long-term progress. Thanks to their support.

We brought our anxious 4-month-old Rough Collie puppy to Cheyenne and Chelsea for obedience and service dog training. They are truly incredible trainers who transformed our unruly nervous puppy into a emboldened model service dog. In fact, we were so impressed that we were bold enough to get two more pups (at the same time!) who we’ve already enrolled into their programs! If you want your dogs to be well-behaved members of your family, who can accompany you anywhere—from public outings to stress-free vet visits—this is the team to call. As a pilot and surfer, having "adventure dogs" who can keep up with my lifestyle is essential. My oldest has accompanied me surfing, kayaking, flying, to theme parks, shopping, everywhere. The impact on our home’s stress level has been worth every penny. I cannot recommend them enough.

I’ve been working with DTE to train my service dog from day one, I can’t say enough about how great this experience has been. They really set every dog up for success. The support I have received and expertise I have witnessed is unmatched. I can say without reservation that I would recommend them to anyone.

After one week of camp training, Logan transformed my terrier into an obedient dog that recalls what she learned in class. She improved tremendously at socializing with other dogs by being at camp with them.

When searching for puppy training I was unsure of what to look for. However, my Pepper and I checked out a couple places. The moment he stepped into the training area at Dog Training Elite, he was mesmerized. I had to pull him away when it was time to leave. So truly Pepper chose Elite. There he learned the basics and it was so very easy to practice at home. The videos sent to me are the best source of reference for me as an owner. I have a busy work schedule so referring back to the videos and having practice sessions with Pepper have been great. I totally recommend Dog Training Elite, my dog has been very easy to correct and he remembers the commands. I haven't utilized the group sessions yet but I took advantage of a package that included a week long all day training camp for my puppy. Totally pleased with this investment and hope to continue utilizing Dog Training Elite in the future.

Since rescuing my almost 2 year baby, we have gone through two different trainers before coming to Elite. My guy is very smart and sweet but very stubborn and had issues with fixations, boundaries and not having a recall to literally save his life. The first trainers were just awful and the second was wonderful, but Otis needed a different approach to training and Dog Training Elite was it! There was a night and day difference on day 1! Read that again .. day 1! Emily, Cheyenne, and Chelsea are just incredible people and so good at what they do! Otis did their two week program and it was the best thing I could have done for him. What I liked most about it is it’s not a board and train. I dropped him off for school in the morning and picked him up after work. He has a new level of confidence and he is more approachable with other dogs, meaning they want to play and engage with him first vs him not respecting boundaries and pushing himself onto others. He listens so well and his recall you ask? Fantastic :) He’s a potato with feet so I don’t expect him to come running but when I call his name but now he always turns and/or stops. I’m so proud of him and us and beyond thankful that I finally took him here. We are always training. Heel is a struggle for us but we’re getting there. This was exactly what my stubborn bully needed 😃 Thank you again!!

We had an amazing experiencing with DTE ! Our golden (Remus) did the platinum and is about to start psychiatric training. 10/10 recommend and cannot thank the staff enough ! Cheyanne and Chelsea are amazing with evaluating and helping you choose which program would be the best fit for you and your companion’s needs along with answering any/ all questions you may have . Logan and the other trainers that works with Remus , are super nice, helpful, and offer great feedback on your companion and ways to help you and your dog succeed in their program and dogs health! We saw an immediate difference in Remus within just 1-2 days of him training in the classes and it has boost his confidence level . He looks happier and shows a more confident and prouder stance in how he represents himself. In addition, the group classes and outings with the pack make it a great learning experience and welcoming to participate no matter where you are at training wise with your furry companion. We couldn’t be more proud and happy to be part of the DTE pack !!!

Had our first training session with Maria today and she handled our 100lb Rottweiler beautifully. She was able to analyze and understand his temperament, and explained how everything work beautifully and even threw in a bit of humor as well, because training your dog can be a stressful experience. It was just the first day but I’m glad we booked the lifetime package, because I can already see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Chelsea, Cheyenne, and Maria are excellent dog trainers. Upon meeting them you instantly know working with dogs is their passion. My little puggle, Maggie, is adorable but was a “hot mess” when it came to behavior. Maria worked with us in home and within a few lessens she was much better behaved. She loves people and didn’t understand that not everyone loves her, her jumping on people has stopped. The group walks in Winter Garden and obedience training in Phelps has helped further improve her listening and behavior. She’s learned how to behave around other dogs and people. I’m considering taking her training to the next level with their therapy dog training. I highly recommend this team for your dog training needs.

Working directly with Cheyenne, Maria, Kari, and Jaden has been a phenomenal experience. I’m very grateful I chose this company. The staff is very kind and well educated. One of my dogs is dog aggressive and my partner and I had to think about Behavioral Euthanasia. This company has given us hope. My dogs are beginning to be well behaved. It’s only been two weeks but I will update this comment in a couple months. Thank you guys for everything.

Benefits of Therapy Dogs

Therapy dogs have a profound impact on individuals’ emotional and physical well-being. Research demonstrates that therapy dogs can improve a patient's mood, reduce stress, and even lower pain levels during hospital stays or medical treatments. Their calming presence provides comfort and relief in challenging moments.

Children, in particular, often respond well to therapy dogs. The companionship and playful interaction of a therapy dog can motivate children to engage more fully in treatments, helping them overcome fear or reluctance. With a therapy dog by their side, children tend to feel more optimistic and less anxious.

Beyond medical settings, therapy dogs also foster social interaction, especially in autism and mental health communities. These dogs offer non-judgmental companionship and serve as a bridge for individuals who may struggle with social connections. By reducing feelings of loneliness and anxiety, therapy dogs offer their owners comfort and companionship that enhances the overall quality of life.

ESA vs. Therapy vs. Service Animals

What's the Difference?

Animals that provide assistance and companionship can be classified into three main groups: service animals, emotional support animals (ESAs), and therapy animals. Each has different responsibilities, training requirements, and legal protections. Knowing the differences can help you choose the right type of support for a disability, emotional needs, or therapy purposes.

Here are the defining features of each type:

Service animals are trained to help individuals by performing tasks that meet their specific needs, such as:

  • Redirecting attention when an individual is beginning to feel overstimulated
  • Reminding owners to take medication
  • Waking someone who is having a nightmare

Service dogs are highly valued in the mental health and disability community and are protected under ADA laws, allowing them to accompany their owners anywhere. At DTE, we provide specialized training for service dogs that assist individuals with autism, diabetes, and PTSD.

The key difference between ESAs, therapy dogs, and service dogs is that service animals are protected by the Americans with Disabilities Act. This means they are allowed to go anywhere their owner goes. ESAs and therapy dogs do not have the same protections as service dogs, and public places can set their own rules about allowing them.

ESAs are prescribed by licensed mental health professionals to help individuals with mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression. These animals provide emotional support simply by being a comforting presence. Unlike service dogs, ESAs are not trained to perform specific tasks related to their owner's condition.

ESAs can be of any breed or age, and while they do not require the same level of training as service dogs, many owners choose to seek additional training. This can help strengthen the bond between the owner and the animal and improve the ESA's ability to provide consistent emotional support in different situations.

Therapy animals provide comfort and emotional support to individuals in need. They are not trained to assist a single person but are instead taught to be well-behaved and sociable around various groups of people. These animals help reduce stress, anxiety, and loneliness for those they visit.

Unlike service animals, therapy animals are not required to perform specific tasks. Their calming presence is what makes them valuable in therapeutic programs.
