Service Dog Training in Orlando, FL

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) defines a service dog as “a dog that is individually trained to do work or perform tasks for a person with a disability.” Disabilities include mental or physical impairments that affect an individual’s ability to perform one or more major life activities (walking, seeing, etc.).

Because service dogs play such a key role in the life of disabled individuals, they are protected by the law. Places of residence, employment, and commercial facilities cannot discriminate against disabled individuals with service animals. If you are wondering how to get a service dog, you can either purchase a fully trained dog or purchase a service puppy and train it.

With our service dog training in Orlando, FL, we ensure that your dog is trained to meet the specific needs of your disability, providing personalized support and empowering both dog and handler for long-term success.

I highly recommend Dog Training Elite in North Orlando. The owner Craig is an outstanding trainer. Craig is very knowledgeable, friendly and patient. He has helped me train my English crème pass her Public Access Test and is now helping me finish her training to be a service dog for both me and with my husband’s mobility challenges. I can’t say enough good things about Craig and his expertise! I am so grateful to have had this experience training my dog. It’s been very rewarding watching how quickly my dog responds to the positive reinforcement that Dog Training Elite uses in its training program. Thank you Craig!

We have had an amazing experience working with Craig and his team to train our golden retriever into a diabetic alert dog! We have seen so much progress in her and can’t wait to see how much more she continues to grow!

We adopted our two-year-old German Shepherd about six months ago, and while she’s an amazing dog, she definitely is high-energy and needed some structure. Working with Craig has been a game changer! Iris has learned so much and the difference in our day-to-day life is incredible. She’s more focused, calmer, and so much easier to communicate with. We still have group classes ahead of us, and we’re excited to continue building on the progress she’s already made. Trainers at DTE are patient, knowledgeable, and clearly passionate about what they do - so thanks to Craig and the whole team at Dog Training Elite Orlando — highly recommend!

I cannot recommend enough going with Dog Training Elite. I have learned an incredible amount of valuable information on how to best direct my dog Enzo. To train him, learn with him, grow with him. The trainer I have the pleasure of working with is Craig, and he couldn’t be better. Polite, calm, friendly and assertive, he has taught me how to best provide the most successful future for my dog. My dog over the course of the training has vastly improved in his obedience, his attitude, and ability to learn. Every tip and trick is customizable to the specific dog, such as interchangeable phrases and terms. The trainer has taught me as the handler how to correctly encourage my dog, correct my dog, and encourage growth. I went from having a crazy silly puppy to a well trained and well mannered dog that I am working towards getting a certification to be a service dog. It wouldn’t be possible if it weren’t for Dog Training Elite! Thank you, a million times over, for helping my dog and I grow into the best team!

We enrolled in the Puppy to Platinum program with Dog Training Elite North and had an outstanding experience from start to finish. When we began, we were struggling with basic commands and walking routines - both of which improved significantly within the first few sessions. The sessions were hands on, direct and easy to reinforce at home. Over time, we saw our dog become not only more obedient but more confident and relaxed in new situations. That shift has made a meaningful difference in our day to day - for both us and our dog. If you are looking for training that delivers results, I highly recommend Dog Training Elite North, Craig, and their team!! Five stars all day.

I have a 8 year old Pitbull and she grew up with 2 dogs and 2 cats that are no longer around. So whenever she sees a dog or cat she’s barking and wanting to go say hello (bark) to where it’s an issue. I kept seeing Craig’s truck so I gave him a call and he has helped us tremendously. I take her everywhere with me now and under control. To be honest, I really didn’t have high hopes going into this, considering her age. But Craig definitely knows what he’s doing.

I’ve had a great experience with Craig while training Cairo. While training can be challenging since Cairo has a huge puppy brain, Craig has helped to teach and provide the resources needed to ensure Cairo’s obedience and ability to the service dog test. Cairo is an extra large puppy that is mixed with Cane Corso, German Shepherd, and Husky so it is extra important in choosing a trainer that can help you breakthrough barriers that may be associated with breeds that have a bit more attitude (or are drama queens like Cairo lol). Craig is patient and knowledgeable and makes training a fun process!

I can’t say enough great things about Craig. He has been working with my dog since she was a puppy, and the results are amazing! He built such strong foundations that have shaped her behavior and confidence. His passion for dogs truly shows in every session. He has so much patience and such a calm, intuitive way with dogs. It’s like he’s a real dog whisperer! He’s also extremely professional, responsible, always on time, incredibly friendly and a really nice person to work with. My dog is completely transformed thanks to his guidance. I’m so grateful for everything he’s done and would recommend him to anyone looking for a dedicated and talented trainer.

Amazing results! My dog, Fenrir, is an exceptionally well-trained dog. Thanks to my trainer, Craig, and Dog Training Elite, Fenrir is able to come with me wherever I take him without causing any issues to the public and myself. I suggest investing into the program as it may help in the future.

I can’t say enough good things about Dog Training Elite! My dog used to eat everything she could find, and I was constantly worried about her safety. He not only helped her stop eating random things but also taught her how to stay calm and focused in public. Now she walks right beside me in public — totally well-behaved, no pulling, no distractions, just confidence and control. I’m so grateful for the time, patience, and care that went into her training. It truly feels like I have a whole new dog. Highly recommend Dog Training Elite to anyone struggling — it’s worth every bit! 🐾

We have a female Belgian Malinois and started training at about 5-6 months old. She was a rescue so we had little knowledge about her parents, she is now just over a year old and become an excellent pup. We did need at home sessions with Craig but she took well to the training almost instantaneously. She is still a bit reactive in specific scenarios but is now under control. While we have had plenty of dogs in the past, this was our first Belgian and we’re glad we got professional help early…her drive, energy, and want to work are amazing but needed some guidance and control.

I would highly recommend Dog training Elite north Orlando! We worked with Craig the trainer and our 8year old pitty. Before training with them our dog was very reactive and mouthy when she would see other dogs wanting to play with them (we pretty much couldn’t take her anywhere) So we did the 1 on 1 home training first. & now She attends the group classes! She goes everywhere with us! She is so good on our walks & Listens very well! I will say it is a 2 sided road you Must also put in the work with your pup and be Consistent! So if you are on the fence about hiring them, go ahead and do it you won’t regret it!

Is a Service Dog The Same As a Therapy Dog?

Many types of working dogs increase the quality of life for their handlers. The three main categories of working dogs are service animal, therapy animal, and emotional support animal. Each category covers different areas of support and different levels of protection under the law.

  1. Service Animal

As mentioned above, service animals assist individuals with disabilities. Depending on the person’s needs, the service animal learns how to perform certain tasks. Guide dogs, for example, help blind individuals safely navigate their environment. Seizure response dogs respond to their handlers when the individual is having a seizure. Service animals are highly trained and specialized, and they are also offered the most protection under the law compared to therapy or emotional support animals.

Dogs are not the only kinds of service animals - miniature horses are often trained to support individuals with disabilities!

  2. Therapy Animal

Therapy dogs provide comfort and improve the mental well-being of individuals in hospitals, hospice care, retirement homes, nursing homes, schools, and more. These dogs must have a friendly, calm demeanor and be comfortable when handled by strangers.

Therapy dogs are not trained to perform specific tasks, but they must be obedient and well-mannered. Therapy animals are permitted in some areas where pets are not, but they have fewer protections than service animals. All therapy dogs must be certified before they can offer their services to the community.

  3. Emotional Support Animal

Emotional support dogs relieve loneliness, anxiety, depression, and other symptoms of mental health disorders. They provide comfort to their handlers, but they are not trained to perform specific tasks. Most emotional support animals are sensitive to the emotional changes of their handler and will remain close by at all times. Emotional support animals are not protected by the ADA, but residential buildings must permit emotional support animals.

What Can Service Dogs Do?

Service dogs are crucial in assisting individuals with various disabilities and conditions, providing them with support, independence, and companionship. These highly trained dogs can perform specific tasks tailored to the needs of their handlers. Learn about breeds that make great service dogs, who can benefit from a service dog and the training that will help these pups meet their handler's needs.

Service dogs are a great help to disabled individuals thanks to their incredible ability to perform highly specialized tasks, like opening doors, switching lights on and off, assisting with balance and stability, guiding, pulling wheelchairs, answering phones and making calls, finding objects or places, unloading and loading items, clearing rooms, finding help, and many more. Service dogs improve the lives of disabled individuals by increasing their autonomy.
Individuals with certain diseases and disorders can benefit from a highly trained service dog. Dogs have an incredible sense of smell and they can detect the chemical changes associated with oncoming seizures and increases in blood pressure. Alert service dogs alert their handler to these situations to prevent a life-threatening emergency. Alert dogs also help those with extreme allergies detect potential allergens in food.
Disabled or epileptic individuals are more prone to emergencies than the average person. Service dogs are trained to alert their handler to a potential emergency, and alert surrounding individuals to an active emergency. Service dogs can also call for help on pre-programmed phones.

Service Dogs for Anxiety, PTSD, and Autism

Service dogs trained to assist handlers with severe anxiety or depression perform specific tasks that reduce the potential for panic attacks or self-harm attempts. Such tasks include deep-pressure therapy, tactile stimulation, alerting, clearing rooms, blocking strangers from approaching, and more. Service dogs trained to assist those with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) have greatly improved the lives of many veterans.

Service dogs also make a big impact on the lives of children with autism. Children with autism are often prone to meltdowns, have trouble communicating, and are quick to run off or become easily lost. Service dogs prevent and mediate all of these behaviors to provide a higher quality of life for children with autism and their families.

As autism is a spectrum disorder, each child has varying needs of assistance. Autism service dogs perform the following tasks:

  • Tracking: Children with autism often wander away, and a parent’s worst fear is turning their back for just a moment and discovering their child is gone. Autism service dogs will track the child if this ever happens.
  • Tethering: This task minimizes wandering, which is common in public settings. The child is tethered to the service dog’s leash or harness, preventing him or her from wandering away.
  • Behavior Interruption: Repetitive and ritualistic behaviors are typical of autistic children, as are meltdowns when the child becomes overstimulated. Autism service dogs recognize these negative behaviors and redirect the child’s attention when they start. A simple paw or nudge is all it takes to prevent a meltdown.

How Do I Get a Service Dog?

If you are wondering how to get a service dog, there are a couple of different approaches. Some service dogs are purchased outright, fully trained. Or a compatible dog is selected and trained from an early age. Training a dog from the start is the best option, especially for those with specialized needs.

Training a dog to perform service responsibilities must start from day one. Only certain breeds are suited to service work, and breeders put a lot of time into raising puppies to be service animals. Once you have purchased a service puppy, additional training is necessary to prepare your puppy for life as a service dog. This is a complicated process that involves various steps. Dog Training Elite makes getting a service dog easier with our service dog training program.

Our talented trainers can help select puppies that are prepared for a life of service from well-respected breeders. When these puppies enter the service dog training program they are closely monitored for behavior and temperament and can be fully obedience trained by the age of six months. These puppies undergo extensive socialization and additional training to ensure they are well-suited for service and therapy needs including specialized service training alongside the new handler.

This program is ideal for handlers who want to take part in the developmental years and extensive training of their service puppy.
