Labradors have been the No. 1 most popular dog breed in America for close to three decades. It’s not hard to understand why – Labradors are playful, energetic, smart, and friendly. They make great companions for individuals and families and generally get along with children and other pets.

Although high-energy, Labradors are laidback and easy going, unfazed by the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Bred originally to be working dogs, their intelligence makes them a great option for service or therapy dogs.

WOW was I impressed with the dog training here! I’ve gone to several others all over Nashville, but I just haven’t seen much progress with my dog’s behavior until one of my close friends from church recommended this place. I own a vizsla and if anyone knows anything about vizslas is that they’re cute but crazy and highly energetic dogs. Going here and training my lovely dog has made him keep the cuteness, but cut out the chaotic behavior. Thanks again this place has saved me so much time and energy. If I ever get another dog the FIRST thing I’ll do is bring them here

I’m so glad that I took my dog Kenji to Dog Training Elite. Kenji as a puppy was very chaotic and would always jump on us and would pull on the leash whenever we’d take him out for runs and walks. He would also chew up all our shoes. But not after taking him here, Kenji has learned to no jump on us or guests and is obedient to our commands on walks. And they have eliminated Kenji’s chewing habits.Highly recommend Dog Training Elite, they are so kind to the dogs and are very professional and friendly.

My experience here with my dog Rocky was unbelievable and necessary! Before his training he was overly excited, unsure how to interact properly with people, barked constantly, and wasn’t potty trained. After his training here all of these issues were fixed! I absolutely recommend to train your dog here with them! Rocky is such a good boy now!

My dog is super friendly but used to be so wild- she would bark all the time, jump up on guest, and always pull at the leash on walks to go say hi to other dogs or people. After putting her through the program here, she has become so much better! She is still so loving but she’s much better about jumping up on people and is much more polite on walks! It’s been a great experience for us through Dog Training Elite!

Dog Training Elite completely changed my dog’s behavior for the better. Before training, my dog struggled with listening, pulling on the leash, and staying calm around other dogs and people. After working with their trainers, the improvement has been insane—in the best way. My dog is more obedient, calmer, more confident, and actually listens to commands now (which I didn’t think was possible 😅). The trainers are super professional, patient, and really know what they’re doing. They don’t just train the dog—they train you too, so you actually understand how to keep the progress going at home. Everything is clear, structured, and tailored to your dog’s personality, not some one-size-fits-all method. If you’re on the fence, don’t be. Dog Training Elite is 100% worth it. My dog is happier, I’m less stressed, and our bond is way stronger now. Highly recommend.

Kenna, Montana & Parker all worked with our dogs and us to create an amazing foundation for us to train both our pups. We have experienced great progress with everything they taught us and them. It is worth the money as long as you are willing to put in the time with your dog. We are looking forward to the remaining group trainings. Thanks Kenna, Parker & Montana for working with us.

Awesome experience with Dog Training Elite!!! They have been helping us with our Labrador and we have seen him make continual progress since day 1. They have been great with helping us address problem behaviors. The instruction we’ve received has empowered us to shape the behaviors we want our dog to display and stop the ones that have been a problem. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!!!

Dog Training Elite was awesome! Couldn’t recommend them enough. My dog would get super hyper/aggressive around the kids and other dogs. Now they are much more tame and their behavior improved greatly. Highly recommend for anyone looking for effective and compassionate training!

What Makes Labradors Unique?

There are many reasons to love Labradors. Here are just a few:

  1. Labradors Love the Water: You may have already known this fact, because Labs are pretty famous for loving the water. They’re actually made for it! A Lab can use their thick tail – sometimes referred to as an “otter tail” – as a powerful rudder. They also have wide, webbed feet to help them swim fast and waterproof coats that help them remain comfortable even in cold water.
  2. They were Bred as Hunting Dogs: Initially, Labs were bred as duck retrievers, and then later as game-hunting companions. They tend to excel in retriever field trials and retriever hunting tests. They’re incredibly versatile as sport dogs, excelling in agility, rally and obedience sports.
  3. Labs Come in Three Colors: Labrador coats come in three colors – black, yellow, and chocolate.
  4. Labs can do Almost Anything: Their intelligence, energy, and affectionate nature makes them a popular choice for service and therapy dogs, as well as for search and rescue teams, and bomb and drug detection. Suffice to say, all Labradors are very good dogs who do very good jobs.

Breed Specific Tips & Tricks

Keeping Your Labrador Happy and Healthy

Although Labradors are famously laid back and friendly, that doesn’t mean they don’t require attentive care. If you’re considering adopting a Labrador, or you already have one and want to learn more about how to keep your pup happy and healthy, consider the following:

  1. Labradors Need Plenty of Exercise: Although Labs are easy going, they need plenty of exercise – even up to two hours a day. This can be made up of long walks, training sessions, playing fetch, or going to the dog park. Though it’s important to make sure they get enough exercise, you also need to be careful you don’t let your dog overdo it, especially as a puppy while their joints and bones are still growing.
  2. Groom Your Lab Weekly: Labradors have short, smooth coats that are prone to shedding. Combing them weekly with a comb or bristle brush, or combing daily during shedding season, can help keep shedding under control. Make sure you have a good vacuum!
  3. Manage their Diet: As big, energetic dogs, Labs need to eat a lot – but they can be prone to putting on pounds, as well. Follow the recommended amounts on dog food packaging, or consult with your vet.
  4. Make sure Your Labrador Gets Lots of Attention: Labradors are very social. Socialization with other dogs is important, so trips to the dog park, doggy play dates, or group training classes at Dog Training Elite can be beneficial for both you and your dog. If your Lab has to be home without you for long stretches of time, be sure to have stimulating dog toys, puzzles, and chew toys available for them, and consider hiring someone to check on and play with them during the day.

The Dog Training Elite Central Nashville training method is based around classical conditioning. Classical conditioning means developing conditioned or automatic reflexes to commands, so when you say “sit,” your dog will sit automatically. Labradors respond especially well to this technique and our trainers will focus on positive reinforcement training for your Labrador puppy.

While all dogs share qualities of kindness, loyalty and intelligence regardless of breed, Dog Training Elite Central Nashville recognizes that every dog is an individual and may require different training methods. We stand out by taking into consideration what breed your dog is when making training goals.

Regardless of your dogs specific breed. Dog Training Elite Central Nashville can help you and your pup overcome any obstacle related to obedience and socialization. Our unique techniques ensure our program is a success no matter what behavior we encounter.
