Service Dog Training in Green Bay / Appleton, WI

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) defines a service dog as “a dog that is individually trained to do work or perform tasks for a person with a disability.” Disabilities include mental or physical impairments that affect an individual’s ability to perform one or more major life activities (walking, seeing, etc.).

Because service dogs play such a key role in the life of disabled individuals, they are protected by the law. Places of residence, employment, and commercial facilities cannot discriminate against disabled individuals with service animals. If you are wondering how to get a service dog, you can either purchase a fully trained dog or purchase a service puppy and train it.

With our service dog training in Green Bay / Appleton, WI, we ensure that your dog is trained to meet the specific needs of your disability, providing personalized support and empowering both dog and handler for long-term success.

I cannot speak highly enough about our experience with Larissa. She was outstanding—kind, knowledgeable, and truly gifted at what she does. Our dog, who we honestly thought might be too old to learn new tricks (or even just basic good behavior), responded incredibly well to her approach. It was a pleasure having Larissa come to our home week after week. Having in‑home training—especially since we live 50 minutes outside of Green Bay—was such a huge benefit and made the entire process so much easier for us. Five stars to Elite Dog Training, and an extra‑bright 5+ stars to Larissa!

Larissa was the BEST! She worked with our dogs, Honey and Bane on basic obedience and some reactivity to other dogs. Our dogs are SO much better now. One of our favorite things we worked on was “place”so our dogs would sit on our couch when someone came over and they wouldn’t greet them until we release them. We also enjoyed working with our dogs to be more neutral while walking. When training dogs, you also have to train the owners and Larissa did a great job navigating the situation when we had some stressful training sessions. Sometimes our dogs were being stubborn and my fiancé and I were both getting frustrated. But Larissa calmed us both down and we were able to have a productive session. Larissa is very patient and always very positive. We looked forward to our sessions each week. 10 out of 10 recommend!!!

We had a great experience working with Hannah Randall from Dog Training Elite. She was professional, knowledgeable, and very flexible with scheduling, which made the training process easy to manage. She explained things clearly and helped us feel confident continuing the training on our own between sessions. A good dog trainer doesn't just work with the dog but also teaches the owners how to be consistent and effective, and Hannah did exactly that. We saw real progress and would absolutely recommend her to anyone looking for a skilled and supportive dog trainer.

Dog Training Elite and trainers Marcy and Mitch are absolutely incredible!!! 💛🐾 The team at Dog Training Elite is so professional, patient, and insanely knowledgeable. They didn’t just work with Albus, they taught us how to confidently lead him and actually understand what he needed. Their training was structured but still personalized to him, and they really focused on getting to the root of his anxiety and reactivity. And now?! Albus is calm, responsive, and SO confident 🥹✨ He walks right past other dogs without any issues, follows commands beautifully, and is genuinely such a joy to take anywhere. I actually look forward to outings now instead of stressing about them. The transformation has truly been life-changing for our family. If you’re even a little unsure about training, this is your sign. Dog Training Elite is worth every single penny. We are beyond grateful and could not recommend them more!!! 🐶💫

We sought out training because Bert, our two year old golden doodle, was barking a lot while we were away. We went with Dog Training Elite because of the positive Google reviews and chose the platinum package because the investment comes with ongoing support if something comes up in the future. We worked with Hannah, she was very knowledgeable and was a great fit. Bert responded well to her and she made things easy for us to understand. Hannah has positive energy and during our sessions we could see her passion for training. She talked us through challenging situations and gave us the confidence we needed to guide Bert. She customized sessions to meet Bert’s needs and never felt rushed. She always had great communication. Bert had a strong base but we were skeptical on how the training would improve the barking while away. Not only have we seen improvements with the barking we have also seen improvements with general obedience and walking without being distracted. We found value in the platinum package and are happy with our investment. We look forward to participating in the group classes and seeing continued progress.

Training with Ramiro has been life changing for our family!!!! Our beautiful boy Donnie started becoming very insecure and reactive towards strangers and other dogs at the age of 8 months old. We assumed he had become aggressive but quickly into his training it was clear that he was just scared. We stopped bringing him places and felt very sad and defeated. We have 2 small children and knew this wouldn’t work long term with them wanting friends over to play someday. We were worried that we could possibly waste our money if the training didn’t work but that definitely was not the case! Seeing our baby boy transform before our eyes has been an incredible feeling and we just feel so proud!! It has been worth every penny! If you are reading these reviews unsure or trying to find a push to go for it, here it is!! Thank you Ramiro and Elite!!

My experience with Hannah at Dog Training Elite was everything I could have hoped for and more. I was feeling incredibly overwhelmed and defeated with my 8-year-old pit bull after moving from a rural community to an apartment complex with many other reactive dogs. Managing her reactivity became increasingly difficult, and it was starting to affect her quality of life. I truly wish I had invested in training sooner. Trying to handle everything on my own felt like too much at times, but Hannah was amazing throughout the entire process. She patiently answered all of my questions and clearly explained the reasoning and goals behind each step. Her guidance helped me feel more confident—not only in the training itself, but also in my bond with my dog. I chose the platinum package, and it was worth every penny. I’m really looking forward to attending group classes, and it’s reassuring to know that I’ll always have support if I need it in the future.

I had the best experience with Dog Training Elite. I had a very nervous rescue with some aggression issues that I really was skeptical I could fix. Dog Training Elite was fabulous from the start with prompt communication and walked us through every step of the process. My dog is now calm and confident and more importantly, I know how to handle all the situations that had me nervous before I went through this. Larissa is the best dog trainer!! I highly recommend!!!

We had an outstanding experience with Dog Training Elite. Ramiro was extremely knowledgeable, professional, and flexible with our schedule. During one session, our puppy had a minor leg injury from earlier in the day, which Ramiro immediately noticed. He paused the training to ensure Oakley wouldn’t put any additional strain on his leg and rescheduled once he was fully healed. That level of care and attention truly stood out and made it clear that Ramiro genuinely cares about the dogs he works with. Highly recommend.

Hannah, our trainer, did an outstanding job with Benito, our one-year-old Goldendoodle, during his Platinum training package. Over the 8 classes, we saw a significant improvement in his behavior. He no longer jumps on people, walks are much calmer, and he has much better manners around others, and he even learned a few great tricks along the way. Hannah traveled from Green Bay to Oshkosh for every class, which truly shows her dedication and professionalism. In the middle of the course, we had a family emergency involving our daughter during one of our scheduled class meetings. She had already made the drive and was incredibly understanding, did not count the class, and rescheduled it without any issue. Benito clearly built a strong bond with her and would even cry when she left after class. We are very grateful for her commitment and highly recommend Hannah and Dog Training Elite Northeast Wisconsin.

If I could give 10 stars I would! Stephany, Ramiro and the team are so great! They took on two of our puppies at once! Both dogs will be service dogs and they worked very hard to understand the needs of our 2 sons so that they could train the dogs for them as individuals! They were VERY patient with the humans too! They are helping us work through all situations with respect and patience. They also do an AMAZING job work with my son who has severe anxiety! They made him feel confident and heard! BRAVO to the team at Dog Training Elite! Excited to see the growth that we will all see in the next steps of our training!

Our trainer Ramiro was great to work with, and the transformation our dog went through from the beginning of her training to the end was spectacular. During the initial meeting our dog Bella was constantly barking and lunging at Ramiro, a behavior we had seen with most house guests. It was to the point we would relocate Bella just to have friends or family over. Ramiro was calm, professional, and confident he could help us. By the third training session Bella was excited for Ramio to come, and showing huge growth. Ultimately Ramiro trained us how to work with Bella and our consistent efforts paid off. During our final in home session Bella was able to walk through a Home Depot relaxed and in a perfect heel. Her reactivity has significantly decreased, and we have the tools to help her through stressful situations now. We look forward to bring her to group classes and continuing her training.

I waited close to a full year to write this review, because I'm the type of person who wants to make sure the quality of a service that they paid for actually is long-lasting. And let me tell you, it is long-lasting. At first, when I saw the pricing on the training through these guys, I thought this better be worth it. And this IS EXTREMELY worth it. My dog had a fence reactivity and also reactive towards other dogs and did not like them. After this training he changed completely and was good around other dogs. I highly recommend these guys. They are the best dog trainers I've ever had the pleasure of working with, and in the future, if and when I would need a dog trainer again, I will definitely be coming back to these guys.

Dog Training Elite changed our lives in so many ways! We brought our two rescue dogs to DTE and the results from their training and expertise exceeded any of our expectations! Marcy and Brianna taught us so much, as well as our dogs! It's hard to put into words the success we've had with Marcy and DTE, we now have two dogs that respond to us, calmly walk with us, and most of all know what we are asking of them and they seem happier! One of our dogs was a demand barker and we never thought we could fix that and now we have had people come to house and ask if she is a different dog...Marcy was so patient with our dogs and teaching us every step of the way and she made it so enjoyable! She made it feel so easy to learn and her positive continual support helped us and our dogs feel more confident about understanding the process. She has such a great way of explaining everything and really understands each dog and their individual personality. We have tried many other training methods that didn't work and can't believe how fortunate we are to have found DTE; my daughter trained her two dogs with them as well and has had immense success! We are so grateful to Marcy and DTE for giving us the training and knowledge to enhance our dogs' confidence, happiness, and quality of life!

Great experience working with Hannah and Dog Training Elite! Hannah was always professional, prepared (and flexible to meet Lacy’s needs), positive and enthusiastic as she worked with us! She left us detailed notes on what and how to continue training between her visits. Looking forward to the group training! Thank you!

I can’t say enough good things about Dog Training Elite. I came to them with a reactive dog who pulled constantly on the leash, and walks were stressful instead of enjoyable. From the very beginning, Ramiro was patient, understanding, and incredibly knowledgeable. He didn’t just train my dog - He taught me how to communicate better and stay calm and consistent. The techniques he used were clear, effective, and humane, and the progress we’ve made is honestly amazing. Walks are now manageable and enjoyable, and my dog is more focused, confident, and responsive than ever before. If you’re struggling with reactivity or leash pulling and feel overwhelmed, I highly recommend Dog Training Elite. They truly care about both the dog and the owner, and the results speak for themselves.

Is a Service Dog The Same As a Therapy Dog?

Many types of working dogs increase the quality of life for their handlers. The three main categories of working dogs are service animal, therapy animal, and emotional support animal. Each category covers different areas of support and different levels of protection under the law.

  1. Service Animal

As mentioned above, service animals assist individuals with disabilities. Depending on the person’s needs, the service animal learns how to perform certain tasks. Guide dogs, for example, help blind individuals safely navigate their environment. Seizure response dogs respond to their handlers when the individual is having a seizure. Service animals are highly trained and specialized, and they are also offered the most protection under the law compared to therapy or emotional support animals.

Dogs are not the only kinds of service animals - miniature horses are often trained to support individuals with disabilities!

  2. Therapy Animal

Therapy dogs provide comfort and improve the mental well-being of individuals in hospitals, hospice care, retirement homes, nursing homes, schools, and more. These dogs must have a friendly, calm demeanor and be comfortable when handled by strangers.

Therapy dogs are not trained to perform specific tasks, but they must be obedient and well-mannered. Therapy animals are permitted in some areas where pets are not, but they have fewer protections than service animals. All therapy dogs must be certified before they can offer their services to the community.

  3. Emotional Support Animal

Emotional support dogs relieve loneliness, anxiety, depression, and other symptoms of mental health disorders. They provide comfort to their handlers, but they are not trained to perform specific tasks. Most emotional support animals are sensitive to the emotional changes of their handler and will remain close by at all times. Emotional support animals are not protected by the ADA, but residential buildings must permit emotional support animals.

What Can Service Dogs Do?

Service dogs are crucial in assisting individuals with various disabilities and conditions, providing them with support, independence, and companionship. These highly trained dogs can perform specific tasks tailored to the needs of their handlers. Learn about breeds that make great service dogs, who can benefit from a service dog and the training that will help these pups meet their handler's needs.

Service dogs are a great help to disabled individuals thanks to their incredible ability to perform highly specialized tasks, like opening doors, switching lights on and off, assisting with balance and stability, guiding, pulling wheelchairs, answering phones and making calls, finding objects or places, unloading and loading items, clearing rooms, finding help, and many more. Service dogs improve the lives of disabled individuals by increasing their autonomy.
Individuals with certain diseases and disorders can benefit from a highly trained service dog. Dogs have an incredible sense of smell and they can detect the chemical changes associated with oncoming seizures and increases in blood pressure. Alert service dogs alert their handler to these situations to prevent a life-threatening emergency. Alert dogs also help those with extreme allergies detect potential allergens in food.
Disabled or epileptic individuals are more prone to emergencies than the average person. Service dogs are trained to alert their handler to a potential emergency, and alert surrounding individuals to an active emergency. Service dogs can also call for help on pre-programmed phones.

Service Dogs for Anxiety, PTSD, and Autism

Service dogs trained to assist handlers with severe anxiety or depression perform specific tasks that reduce the potential for panic attacks or self-harm attempts. Such tasks include deep-pressure therapy, tactile stimulation, alerting, clearing rooms, blocking strangers from approaching, and more. Service dogs trained to assist those with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) have greatly improved the lives of many veterans.

Service dogs also make a big impact on the lives of children with autism. Children with autism are often prone to meltdowns, have trouble communicating, and are quick to run off or become easily lost. Service dogs prevent and mediate all of these behaviors to provide a higher quality of life for children with autism and their families.

As autism is a spectrum disorder, each child has varying needs of assistance. Autism service dogs perform the following tasks:

  • Tracking: Children with autism often wander away, and a parent’s worst fear is turning their back for just a moment and discovering their child is gone. Autism service dogs will track the child if this ever happens.
  • Tethering: This task minimizes wandering, which is common in public settings. The child is tethered to the service dog’s leash or harness, preventing him or her from wandering away.
  • Behavior Interruption: Repetitive and ritualistic behaviors are typical of autistic children, as are meltdowns when the child becomes overstimulated. Autism service dogs recognize these negative behaviors and redirect the child’s attention when they start. A simple paw or nudge is all it takes to prevent a meltdown.

How Do I Get a Service Dog?

If you are wondering how to get a service dog, there are a couple of different approaches. Some service dogs are purchased outright, fully trained. Or a compatible dog is selected and trained from an early age. Training a dog from the start is the best option, especially for those with specialized needs.

Training a dog to perform service responsibilities must start from day one. Only certain breeds are suited to service work, and breeders put a lot of time into raising puppies to be service animals. Once you have purchased a service puppy, additional training is necessary to prepare your puppy for life as a service dog. This is a complicated process that involves various steps. Dog Training Elite makes getting a service dog easier with our service dog training program.

Our talented trainers can help select puppies that are prepared for a life of service from well-respected breeders. When these puppies enter the service dog training program they are closely monitored for behavior and temperament and can be fully obedience trained by the age of six months. These puppies undergo extensive socialization and additional training to ensure they are well-suited for service and therapy needs including specialized service training alongside the new handler.

This program is ideal for handlers who want to take part in the developmental years and extensive training of their service puppy.
