Service Dog Training in Green Bay / Appleton, WI

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) defines a service dog as “a dog that is individually trained to do work or perform tasks for a person with a disability.” Disabilities include mental or physical impairments that affect an individual’s ability to perform one or more major life activities (walking, seeing, etc.).

Because service dogs play such a key role in the life of disabled individuals, they are protected by the law. Places of residence, employment, and commercial facilities cannot discriminate against disabled individuals with service animals. If you are wondering how to get a service dog, you can either purchase a fully trained dog or purchase a service puppy and train it.

With our service dog training in Green Bay / Appleton, WI, we ensure that your dog is trained to meet the specific needs of your disability, providing personalized support and empowering both dog and handler for long-term success.

Training so far has been absolutely amazing. Our trainer is Hannah and she was very patient with me. I was struggling with the e-collar because it was my first time ever using one. I am about to start group classes and can’t wait to continue on this journey with my dog Finn. We are working towards service dog work and having someone there to help us along the way has been so encouraging!

I highly recommend Tina at Dog Training Elite. From our very first session Tina demonstrated exceptional professionalism, extensive knowledge and genuine passion for dog training. She took the time to understand Stella’s obedience challenges and explained every technique in a way that was easy to understand and apply. Tina was always punctual, patient and affectionate with Stella making each training session a positive experience. It was clear that she truly cares about the dogs she works with and is committed to helping both the dog and the owner succeed. She was always willing to answer every question and address any concerns we had about Stella’s progress. She was always receptive, encouraging in her explanations giving us the confidence to continue reinforcing the training at home. I have also attended my first group class with Stella and was very impressed with the organization and the training that was worked on. It was a safe, welcoming environment and both dogs and owners were well supported. Looking forward to continuing working on Stella’s obedience with the guidance from DTE!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ If you're wondering whether Dog Training Elite Northeast Wisconsin is worth it, let me save you some time... ABSOLUTELY! We reached out to Dog Training Elite after what was honestly one of the scariest moments I've ever experienced with our one-year-old Yellow Lab, Finland. Like many young Labs, Finland believed every walk was an Olympic pulling event. We tried different leashes, harnesses, and every "miracle" gadget we could find. If he decided he wanted to investigate something, we were just along for the ride. Then came *the walk*. We were heading home when Finland spotted a service worker on the sidewalk. His whole back end turned into one giant wag, and he was determined to go say hello. I turned to avoid the distraction, and at that exact moment, a brown paper bag blew across the sidewalk. Naturally, Finland decided that bag was the most exciting thing he'd ever seen. In the blink of an eye, the leash wrapped around my leg, flipped me flat onto my back, and Finland dragged me into the street... just as a semi truck was approaching. Thankfully, the driver stopped in time and helped me up. I cried the entire walk home, convinced I'd never be able to safely walk my own dog again. The first thing I did when I got home was call Dog Training Elite Northeast Wisconsin. Marcy answered the phone and immediately put my mind at ease. She assured me they could help make our walks enjoyable again. She wasn't kidding. From day one, both Marcy and Stephany were incredibly patient, encouraging, and genuinely cared about both me *and* Finland. They never made me feel embarrassed or judged. Every lesson built our confidence together, and before long, our chaotic walks turned into something I actually looked forward to. Today, our walks are relaxing, enjoyable, and something we both love. Finland still has his goofy Lab personality, but now he walks with manners and actually pays attention to me. Dog Training Elite didn't just train our dog. They gave me my confidence back. If you're on the fence about investing in training, don't wait until you have your own scary story. Call them now. It was one of the best decisions we've ever made for both our family and our sweet boy. Thank you, Marcy and Stephany, for changing our lives, one walk at a time! 🐾💛

We chose Dog Training Elite because we needed help with our sweet but rambunctious 1 year old golden retriever, Greta. I was a little nervous about the use of an e-collar at first, but after our initial meeting with Rico and getting to feel for ourselves that the stimulation from the e-collar isn't painful, I felt more confident that it was the right choice. We started working with Tina and within one week we went from having to bribe Greta to come to us using a trail of treats to having her come to us easily. Now that we have completed our individual lessons, Greta can heed all of our commands and will get even better with more practice. She is still a young dog with lots of energy, but we can more easily channel that energy thanks to the skills we all learned through training. Tina was a patient and knowledgeable trainer, which was so helpful to us because in addition to helping my husband and I learn to train Greta she also helped our 6 year old work with her too. Any time we had questions Tina was able to answer them or find out the answer for us, including problem solving for some smaller non-targeted behaviors Greta was showing and troubleshooting when Greta needed changes to her e-collar set up. We look forward to continuing our work with Dog Training Elite in group lessons, and highly recommend their services!

Ramiro was great to work with. Very educated, great at explaining and talking things through with us when we had questions about anything. Our 3 year old rescue Pitbull/Beagle mix is a totally different dog after the 8 in home sessions. We look forward to participating in the Group Sessions and continuing his journey.

From our initial phone call with Marcy, I knew we had connected to the right training program for our golden Nellie. Marcy was encouraging, understanding, and validating. The training sessions in our home were so effective. Marcy was amazing with Nellie. She helped me control my own anxiety and she was very supportive and built confidence in our abilities to work with Nellie. Marcy was consistently patient, knowledgeable and professional. Nellie has learned so much. The training was exceptional and has made her a well mannered dog. We would highly recommend Dog Training Elite.

Here’s a polished version that incorporates your additional feedback about Larissa’s work with your family and her approach to e-collar training: Our experience with Dog Training Elite was excellent from start to finish. Larissa was professional, knowledgeable, and genuinely invested in Nala’s success. She took the time to understand our long-term goal of helping Nala progress toward becoming a psychiatric service dog and tailored the training to her specific needs, temperament, and learning style. The instruction was clear and easy for our family to follow, making practice at home highly effective. One of the biggest improvements was teaching Nala to focus on us and look to us for direction rather than making her own decisions. Larissa helped us establish consistent leadership so Nala understands that we are the ones in control, not the other way around. After just three sessions, we saw major improvements in her obedience, engagement, focus, and responsiveness. By the end of the program, Nala was reliably following commands at home and in distracting public environments while maintaining much better attention on her handlers. Larissa was also incredibly patient in teaching us, as owners, how to properly train and communicate with Nala. She took the time to explain the purpose and correct use of the e-collar as a training tool, emphasizing that it is meant to reinforce communication and consistency rather than punishment. She even offered to speak with any member of our household to ensure everyone understood the training methods and the importance of using the e-collar correctly and consistently. What impressed us most was the focus on building the handler-dog relationship that is essential for a future psychiatric service dog. Nala learned to check in with us more consistently, remain calm around distractions, and respond confidently to direction. Daily walks became more structured and enjoyable, unwanted behaviors decreased significantly, and we felt much more confident handling her in a variety of situations. We are grateful for the skills, leadership techniques, and confidence Larissa helped us develop, and we highly recommend Dog Training Elite to anyone seeking professional, high-quality dog training.

We couldn't be happier with our experience! Our dog, Poppy, is incredibly sweet but also very stubborn, and we weren't sure how much progress we'd be able to make. Thanks to the patience, expertise, and encouragement of our trainer, Marcy, we've seen an amazing transformation. Marcy took the time to understand Poppy's personality and tailored her approach to what worked best for her. She made training enjoyable for both us and our dog while giving us practical tools and techniques we could use every day. What impressed us most was Marcy's patience and consistency—she never gave up on Poppy, even when Poppy was determined to do things her own way! Poppy is now more responsive, better behaved, and much more confident. The improvement has made a huge difference in our daily life, and we truly appreciate all the support and guidance we received throughout the process. If you're looking for a dog training company that genuinely cares about your dog's success, we highly recommend them. And a special thank you to Marcy for helping us turn our stubborn pup into a well-mannered companion!

Hannah was absolutely fantastic with Ozzy, and we all loved working with her. She was patient with us (it's as much about training the owners as it is the pup!) and broke down each lesson into easily manageable parts. Ozzy (and we) highly recommend Hannah for any dog training needs, and we are thankful for Dog Training Elite's curriculum, services, and professionalism!

I cannot say enough great things about Dog Training Elite! My trainer, Hannah, was absolutely amazing — so patient, knowledgeable, and genuinely wonderful with both of my dogs. I have a reactive older dog AND a puppy (Tilly, who just graduated her training — so proud!), and Hannah never made me feel overwhelmed. She actually gave me the confidence to feel like ‘I got this,’ even on the hard days. What really set them apart was that they came to our home to work with us in our own space, which made such a difference for both dogs. If you’re on the fence, don’t hesitate — I cannot recommend Dog Training Elite highly enough. Thank you, Hannah!

Is a Service Dog The Same As a Therapy Dog?

Many types of working dogs increase the quality of life for their handlers. The three main categories of working dogs are service animal, therapy animal, and emotional support animal. Each category covers different areas of support and different levels of protection under the law.

  1. Service Animal

As mentioned above, service animals assist individuals with disabilities. Depending on the person’s needs, the service animal learns how to perform certain tasks. Guide dogs, for example, help blind individuals safely navigate their environment. Seizure response dogs respond to their handlers when the individual is having a seizure. Service animals are highly trained and specialized, and they are also offered the most protection under the law compared to therapy or emotional support animals.

Dogs are not the only kinds of service animals - miniature horses are often trained to support individuals with disabilities!

  2. Therapy Animal

Therapy dogs provide comfort and improve the mental well-being of individuals in hospitals, hospice care, retirement homes, nursing homes, schools, and more. These dogs must have a friendly, calm demeanor and be comfortable when handled by strangers.

Therapy dogs are not trained to perform specific tasks, but they must be obedient and well-mannered. Therapy animals are permitted in some areas where pets are not, but they have fewer protections than service animals. All therapy dogs must be certified before they can offer their services to the community.

  3. Emotional Support Animal

Emotional support dogs relieve loneliness, anxiety, depression, and other symptoms of mental health disorders. They provide comfort to their handlers, but they are not trained to perform specific tasks. Most emotional support animals are sensitive to the emotional changes of their handler and will remain close by at all times. Emotional support animals are not protected by the ADA, but residential buildings must permit emotional support animals.

What Can Service Dogs Do?

Service dogs are crucial in assisting individuals with various disabilities and conditions, providing them with support, independence, and companionship. These highly trained dogs can perform specific tasks tailored to the needs of their handlers. Learn about breeds that make great service dogs, who can benefit from a service dog and the training that will help these pups meet their handler's needs.

Service dogs are a great help to disabled individuals thanks to their incredible ability to perform highly specialized tasks, like opening doors, switching lights on and off, assisting with balance and stability, guiding, pulling wheelchairs, answering phones and making calls, finding objects or places, unloading and loading items, clearing rooms, finding help, and many more. Service dogs improve the lives of disabled individuals by increasing their autonomy.
Individuals with certain diseases and disorders can benefit from a highly trained service dog. Dogs have an incredible sense of smell and they can detect the chemical changes associated with oncoming seizures and increases in blood pressure. Alert service dogs alert their handler to these situations to prevent a life-threatening emergency. Alert dogs also help those with extreme allergies detect potential allergens in food.
Disabled or epileptic individuals are more prone to emergencies than the average person. Service dogs are trained to alert their handler to a potential emergency, and alert surrounding individuals to an active emergency. Service dogs can also call for help on pre-programmed phones.

Service Dogs for Anxiety, PTSD, and Autism

Service dogs trained to assist handlers with severe anxiety or depression perform specific tasks that reduce the potential for panic attacks or self-harm attempts. Such tasks include deep-pressure therapy, tactile stimulation, alerting, clearing rooms, blocking strangers from approaching, and more. Service dogs trained to assist those with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) have greatly improved the lives of many veterans.

Service dogs also make a big impact on the lives of children with autism. Children with autism are often prone to meltdowns, have trouble communicating, and are quick to run off or become easily lost. Service dogs prevent and mediate all of these behaviors to provide a higher quality of life for children with autism and their families.

As autism is a spectrum disorder, each child has varying needs of assistance. Autism service dogs perform the following tasks:

  • Tracking: Children with autism often wander away, and a parent’s worst fear is turning their back for just a moment and discovering their child is gone. Autism service dogs will track the child if this ever happens.
  • Tethering: This task minimizes wandering, which is common in public settings. The child is tethered to the service dog’s leash or harness, preventing him or her from wandering away.
  • Behavior Interruption: Repetitive and ritualistic behaviors are typical of autistic children, as are meltdowns when the child becomes overstimulated. Autism service dogs recognize these negative behaviors and redirect the child’s attention when they start. A simple paw or nudge is all it takes to prevent a meltdown.

How Do I Get a Service Dog?

If you are wondering how to get a service dog, there are a couple of different approaches. Some service dogs are purchased outright, fully trained. Or a compatible dog is selected and trained from an early age. Training a dog from the start is the best option, especially for those with specialized needs.

Training a dog to perform service responsibilities must start from day one. Only certain breeds are suited to service work, and breeders put a lot of time into raising puppies to be service animals. Once you have purchased a service puppy, additional training is necessary to prepare your puppy for life as a service dog. This is a complicated process that involves various steps. Dog Training Elite makes getting a service dog easier with our service dog training program.

Our talented trainers can help select puppies that are prepared for a life of service from well-respected breeders. When these puppies enter the service dog training program they are closely monitored for behavior and temperament and can be fully obedience trained by the age of six months. These puppies undergo extensive socialization and additional training to ensure they are well-suited for service and therapy needs including specialized service training alongside the new handler.

This program is ideal for handlers who want to take part in the developmental years and extensive training of their service puppy.
