Service Dog Training in Green Bay / Appleton, WI

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) defines a service dog as “a dog that is individually trained to do work or perform tasks for a person with a disability.” Disabilities include mental or physical impairments that affect an individual’s ability to perform one or more major life activities (walking, seeing, etc.).

Because service dogs play such a key role in the life of disabled individuals, they are protected by the law. Places of residence, employment, and commercial facilities cannot discriminate against disabled individuals with service animals. If you are wondering how to get a service dog, you can either purchase a fully trained dog or purchase a service puppy and train it.

With our service dog training in Green Bay / Appleton, WI, we ensure that your dog is trained to meet the specific needs of your disability, providing personalized support and empowering both dog and handler for long-term success.

We had a great experience working with Hannah Randall from Dog Training Elite. She was professional, knowledgeable, and very flexible with scheduling, which made the training process easy to manage. Hannah took the time to understand our dog and adjusted her approach to fit their personality, which made a big difference. She explained things clearly and helped us feel confident continuing the training on our own between sessions. A good dog trainer doesn’t just work with the dog but also teaches the owners how to be consistent and effective, and Hannah did exactly that. We saw real progress and would absolutely recommend her to anyone looking for a skilled and supportive dog trainer.

I waited close to a full year to write this review, because I'm the type of person who wants to make sure the quality of a service that they paid for actually is long-lasting. And let me tell you, it is long-lasting. At first, when I saw the pricing on the training through these guys, I thought this better be worth it. And this IS EXTREMELY worth it. My dog had a fence reactivity and also reactive towards other dogs and did not like them. After this training he changed completely and was good around other dogs. I highly recommend these guys. They are the best dog trainers I've ever had the pleasure of working with, and in the future, if and when I would need a dog trainer again, I will definitely be coming back to these guys.

Dog Training Elite changed our lives in so many ways! We brought our two rescue dogs to DTE and the results from their training and expertise exceeded any of our expectations! Marcy and Brianna taught us so much, as well as our dogs! It's hard to put into words the success we've had with Marcy and DTE, we now have two dogs that respond to us, calmly walk with us, and most of all know what we are asking of them and they seem happier! One of our dogs was a demand barker and we never thought we could fix that and now we have had people come to house and ask if she is a different dog...Marcy was so patient with our dogs and teaching us every step of the way and she made it so enjoyable! She made it feel so easy to learn and her positive continual support helped us and our dogs feel more confident about understanding the process. She has such a great way of explaining everything and really understands each dog and their individual personality. We have tried many other training methods that didn't work and can't believe how fortunate we are to have found DTE; my daughter trained her two dogs with them as well and has had immense success! We are so grateful to Marcy and DTE for giving us the training and knowledge to enhance our dogs' confidence, happiness, and quality of life!

Great experience working with Hannah and Dog Training Elite! Hannah was always professional, prepared (and flexible to meet Lacy’s needs), positive and enthusiastic as she worked with us! She left us detailed notes on what and how to continue training between her visits. Looking forward to the group training! Thank you!

I can’t say enough good things about Dog Training Elite. I came to them with a reactive dog who pulled constantly on the leash, and walks were stressful instead of enjoyable. From the very beginning, Ramiro was patient, understanding, and incredibly knowledgeable. He didn’t just train my dog - He taught me how to communicate better and stay calm and consistent. The techniques he used were clear, effective, and humane, and the progress we’ve made is honestly amazing. Walks are now manageable and enjoyable, and my dog is more focused, confident, and responsive than ever before. If you’re struggling with reactivity or leash pulling and feel overwhelmed, I highly recommend Dog Training Elite. They truly care about both the dog and the owner, and the results speak for themselves.

One of the worst parts of a dog passing away is realizing that if you want that same companionship you have to go through a learning phase with a new dog. After your heart heals and you decide to bring a new dog into your home, you quickly realize you've forgotten everything you thought you knew about training a pup and the excitement of a new family member quickly turns into tired exhaustion, frustration, and a hopeless feeling that your new dog may never be as good as your old dog. Reaching out to Dog Training Elite Northeast Wisconsin provided instant puppy behavioral improvement, helped train the trainers (us owners), and provided hope for a future with a well behaved dog. The entire team was helpful, responsive, and experts in their respective areas, but Larissa was exceptionally fantastic and great to work with. We are looking forward to continuing our training toward a therapy dog certification and would recommend Elite to anyone wanting some additional help and guidance training your dog.

We were able to get 2 beagles to laydown and stay while other dogs are around and playing. Not an easy task. This is as much owner training as do training.

Six months ago we wouldn't have even considered bringing our dog to a public store, and today Bear passed his final training at Scheels. Ramiro and his team are great to work with. You will be happy with their services.

We are very happy we decided to sign up with Elite to train our yellow lab Birch. From the minute my husband met Marcy and team he was impressed with their knowledge of dog behavior and training techniques. After 4 days of camp our puppy knew all commands they taught. They will give you the techniques and follow-up help for you to continue training at home. Thank you Marcy and team for your patience training a high energy pup!! He is a better pet for it.

Very glad I went with them for training my service dog. They have answered every question I've had, very accommodating, and very knowledgeable. I have been working with them from the time my pup was 9 weeks old and he's now 7 months. The owners and all the trainers are truly amazing people! Had to add a picture of the traine.

We were so happy with our experience with Dog Training Elite Northeast Wi and our trainer Brianna! Our pittie mix learned so much in the 8 sessions, in home, and out in public. I appreciated the clear explanations on how to use the tools, and the dog psychology behind our lessons. Brianna offered a variety of options during our training sessions-we did walks on our property, met in a public place, and we did our last lesson at DTENEW’s facility. Which was awesome! Brianna also brought her well trained dogs to our home to expose our dog to new dogs, and to train through that interaction. We were able to have our dog take the Canine Good Citizen test with Brianna, and she passed with flying colors (see photo). I could not have asked for a better experience overall. It was a big decision picking a dog training method and company. I am very happy we went with an in home trainer with support and classes available at their facility as well, and the e-collar system. We will have lifetime trainer support with the package we chose, and we are now able to go to their on site group classes and drop in days (extra fee per use). I had initially thought I would do a board and train facility, but Romero suggested that an in home trainer would be a better fit, and I am happy I went with his suggestion. I highly recommend Dog Training Elite Northeast Wisconsin!

Brianna was amazing to work with! She even included our kids in training during our home sessions. Our dog, Apple, loved training with her and we appreciated the time she took to teach us too. Every trainer we met was very knowledgeable, and it shows they have a passion for helping each dog they they work with. Apple is now a canine good citizen, we're so proud of our girl! We're looking forward to continuing to build her skills at day camps and group classes!

We took our puppy here to learn basic manners and obedience and they exceeded our expectation! In just 1 month our puppy has not only learned the commands but knows to listen when we give commands. The team was so helpful through the whole process; answered all our questions and made us comfortable with everything that came with training. Absolutely recommend them for any dog training needs! Thank you Larissa and Marcy for all your hard work!

Every dollar is well spent with Elite Northeast Dog Training. Everyone who knew my dog knew he was a sweetie, but he didn’t always show it to most people—everyone said he “needed training.” After searching for a while, I found Elite Northeast and never doubted they could help me and my reactive dog. Now, I get daily compliments on how “good” and “well-behaved” he is, and I truly feel the difference—both of us are so much less stressed and more confident.

Is a Service Dog The Same As a Therapy Dog?

Many types of working dogs increase the quality of life for their handlers. The three main categories of working dogs are service animal, therapy animal, and emotional support animal. Each category covers different areas of support and different levels of protection under the law.

  1. Service Animal

As mentioned above, service animals assist individuals with disabilities. Depending on the person’s needs, the service animal learns how to perform certain tasks. Guide dogs, for example, help blind individuals safely navigate their environment. Seizure response dogs respond to their handlers when the individual is having a seizure. Service animals are highly trained and specialized, and they are also offered the most protection under the law compared to therapy or emotional support animals.

Dogs are not the only kinds of service animals - miniature horses are often trained to support individuals with disabilities!

  2. Therapy Animal

Therapy dogs provide comfort and improve the mental well-being of individuals in hospitals, hospice care, retirement homes, nursing homes, schools, and more. These dogs must have a friendly, calm demeanor and be comfortable when handled by strangers.

Therapy dogs are not trained to perform specific tasks, but they must be obedient and well-mannered. Therapy animals are permitted in some areas where pets are not, but they have fewer protections than service animals. All therapy dogs must be certified before they can offer their services to the community.

  3. Emotional Support Animal

Emotional support dogs relieve loneliness, anxiety, depression, and other symptoms of mental health disorders. They provide comfort to their handlers, but they are not trained to perform specific tasks. Most emotional support animals are sensitive to the emotional changes of their handler and will remain close by at all times. Emotional support animals are not protected by the ADA, but residential buildings must permit emotional support animals.

What Can Service Dogs Do?

Service dogs are crucial in assisting individuals with various disabilities and conditions, providing them with support, independence, and companionship. These highly trained dogs can perform specific tasks tailored to the needs of their handlers. Learn about breeds that make great service dogs, who can benefit from a service dog and the training that will help these pups meet their handler's needs.

Service dogs are a great help to disabled individuals thanks to their incredible ability to perform highly specialized tasks, like opening doors, switching lights on and off, assisting with balance and stability, guiding, pulling wheelchairs, answering phones and making calls, finding objects or places, unloading and loading items, clearing rooms, finding help, and many more. Service dogs improve the lives of disabled individuals by increasing their autonomy.
Individuals with certain diseases and disorders can benefit from a highly trained service dog. Dogs have an incredible sense of smell and they can detect the chemical changes associated with oncoming seizures and increases in blood pressure. Alert service dogs alert their handler to these situations to prevent a life-threatening emergency. Alert dogs also help those with extreme allergies detect potential allergens in food.
Disabled or epileptic individuals are more prone to emergencies than the average person. Service dogs are trained to alert their handler to a potential emergency, and alert surrounding individuals to an active emergency. Service dogs can also call for help on pre-programmed phones.

Service Dogs for Anxiety, PTSD, and Autism

Service dogs trained to assist handlers with severe anxiety or depression perform specific tasks that reduce the potential for panic attacks or self-harm attempts. Such tasks include deep-pressure therapy, tactile stimulation, alerting, clearing rooms, blocking strangers from approaching, and more. Service dogs trained to assist those with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) have greatly improved the lives of many veterans.

Service dogs also make a big impact on the lives of children with autism. Children with autism are often prone to meltdowns, have trouble communicating, and are quick to run off or become easily lost. Service dogs prevent and mediate all of these behaviors to provide a higher quality of life for children with autism and their families.

As autism is a spectrum disorder, each child has varying needs of assistance. Autism service dogs perform the following tasks:

  • Tracking: Children with autism often wander away, and a parent’s worst fear is turning their back for just a moment and discovering their child is gone. Autism service dogs will track the child if this ever happens.
  • Tethering: This task minimizes wandering, which is common in public settings. The child is tethered to the service dog’s leash or harness, preventing him or her from wandering away.
  • Behavior Interruption: Repetitive and ritualistic behaviors are typical of autistic children, as are meltdowns when the child becomes overstimulated. Autism service dogs recognize these negative behaviors and redirect the child’s attention when they start. A simple paw or nudge is all it takes to prevent a meltdown.

How Do I Get a Service Dog?

If you are wondering how to get a service dog, there are a couple of different approaches. Some service dogs are purchased outright, fully trained. Or a compatible dog is selected and trained from an early age. Training a dog from the start is the best option, especially for those with specialized needs.

Training a dog to perform service responsibilities must start from day one. Only certain breeds are suited to service work, and breeders put a lot of time into raising puppies to be service animals. Once you have purchased a service puppy, additional training is necessary to prepare your puppy for life as a service dog. This is a complicated process that involves various steps. Dog Training Elite makes getting a service dog easier with our service dog training program.

Our talented trainers can help select puppies that are prepared for a life of service from well-respected breeders. When these puppies enter the service dog training program they are closely monitored for behavior and temperament and can be fully obedience trained by the age of six months. These puppies undergo extensive socialization and additional training to ensure they are well-suited for service and therapy needs including specialized service training alongside the new handler.

This program is ideal for handlers who want to take part in the developmental years and extensive training of their service puppy.
