Service Dog Training FAQs

Service dogs are dogs that have been specially trained to assist their handler or owner with specific tasks. Dog Training Elite Dallas—Fort Worth trains dogs to assist people with epilepsy, diabetes, PTSD, autism, and various mental illnesses.

Service dogs are for any individual dealing with a disability that lowers their quality of life. For example, someone who suffers from epilepsy may avoid going out in public due to a fear of falling or other consequences related to seizures. This may inhibit their independence and sense of well-being.

In addition to improving the lives of individuals, service dogs can bring a sense of security to families, such as families with autistic children. Children with autism can often feel isolated and a service dog becomes a 24/7 companion to share experiences with, connect with and love. They can also help children reintegrate into society and connect with others.

Families who have children with autism experience a decrease in stress as they are more able to engage socially in public settings and experience less anxiety at home. A service dog increases safety and has a calming presence that can minimize emotional outbursts, allowing the family to feel more secure and a child with autism to better participate in family activities.

Service dogs are for all individuals or families that are experiencing a decrease in quality of life due to disability.

Service dog training begins with puppies. Dog Training Elite Dallas—Fort Worth’s service puppy training program works with breeders to adopt puppies that are fully obedience trained by six months and are ready to undergo extensive socialization and additional training to ensure they are well-suited for service and therapy needs.

Then, Dog Training Elite Dallas—Fort Worth places puppies with families or individuals. Further specialized service training takes place alongside the new handler. It generally takes 1-2 years for a service dog to become fully trained.

Service dog training focuses on two main areas: public access behaviors, and how to “do work or perform tasks” that assist with a disability.

Public access behaviors refer to how a service dog acts in public - well-trained service dogs remain calm in public situations and in turn help their handlers to stay calm, and are attuned to any other handler needs.

As for “do work or perform tasks,” the ADA requires that service dogs be trained to take a specific action when needed to assist the person with a disability.

For example, to assist handlers with PTSD, Dog Training Elite Dallas—Fort Worth trains dogs to de-escalate anxiety, wake handlers experiencing night terrors, and so on.

The ADA does not require special certification for service animals. State and local government agencies, businesses and non-profit organizations may not require documentation, such as proof that the animal has been certified, trained or licensed as a service animal, as a condition for entry. Mandatory registration of service animals in the city of residence is also not permissible under the ADA.

However, service animals are not exempt from local animal control or public health requirements, such as vaccinations, or local dog licensing and registration requirements.

Dog Training Elite Dallas—Fort Worth sets itself apart from other dog training methods by focusing on positive reinforcement with a personalized, in-home approach. This method empowers owners and handlers to be an integral part of the process for sustained dog obedience and service training. For service dogs especially, it is important that handlers be present and involved every step of the way.

The positive reinforcement approach, also referred to as “Classical Conditioning” or the “Pavlovian” model has shown to be more effective with longer lasting results than any other training method.

Dog Training Elite Dallas—Fort Worth does not use punishments or shock collars to break bad habits. Instead, Dog Training Elite Dallas—Fort Worth pairs positive reinforcement training with a vibration electronic collar. An electronic collar is not a shock collar and does not harm the dog. It is used to gain the dog’s attention, similar to a tug on a leash. It is never used as a punishment for bad behavior.

Another unique aspect of training with Dog Training Elite Dallas—Fort Worth is that while most dog training programs train dogs at their own facilities, Dog Training Elite Dallas—Fort Worth specializes in in-home training, customizing training to the dog, its owners and its environment for long-lasting success.

Positive Reinforcement Training

Training takes time, commitment and balance and Dog Training Elite Dallas—Fort Worth is there every step of the way. With Dog Training Elite Dallas—Fort Worth, dogs will learn the highest level of obedience, even in the face of the toughest level of distractions. The positive-reinforcement method focuses on encouraging good behavior through ongoing praise, creating a dog that wants to please from the inside out and creating deep-rooted, sustained obedience as well as a strong bond between dog and owner.

Our Balanced Theory

We base our training around the "Classical Conditioning" model (a.k.a. "Pavlovian" or "respondent conditioning"). This includes developing conditioned or automatic reflexes to commands. In its simplest form (after proper conditioning), when the owner says "sit," the dog automatically sits without thinking about it. Our unique techniques ensure our program is a success no matter what behavior we encounter.

Dog Training Elite Dallas—Fort Worth is the top company near you that uses professional positive dog training methods.

Jordan and Atlas have helped us train our German Shepherd. We now have the confidence to control him in any situation. We received very detailed training with real life scenarios walking him around our neighborhood with many distractions that have helped our GSD adapt.

Kat is da bomb! She has taught our dog so many wonderful things. Our rambunctious puppy has learned to follow our commands so much that we take her out in public wherever we go. Of course it's not all work with training as Dolly has come to love her play time at the end with Kat's dog Bojack. I would highly recommend Dog Training Elite for for all your training needs.

My experience thus far has been amazing. Dog Training Elite Dallas covers all I need and more with my rescue puppy. They cater to your specific needs as well as your dog’s. Cat, my primary dog trainer, could not have been a better fit. Cat is phenomenal at not only helping train the new weekly command, but at answering every question I have asked. Cat understood our dynamic almost instantly, therefore adding tips to help me help Lucy. The same goes for all of those who have helped Lucy & I on our journey. Lucy & I have completed the in-home puppy obedience class, and now we will be attending socialization classes. Thank you Dallas Training Elite!!

Helped us so much to achieve our goals. Trainers are so enthusiastic and dog loving yet they do have high standards for a dog's behaviour! We especilly liked sessions with Jordan. We are half way through and our pup already made a huge progress. Training with an e-collar gives so much more freedom to him and so much more peace of mind to us.

We have been happy with the trainers and techniques taught to us so far. Initially we met Tra to disucss things, then met Jordan on our first session which went great, and finished our in home sessions with Cat, who was also great and Charli was very comfortable with. Our 10 month old GSD puppy was already a great listener, and obeyed many commands, but we wanted to really tighten it up to longer implied stays in commands and with distractions, and work on her confidence as she is still scared of some noises and people. Cat has been great with our Charli girl. We worked with her dog and my children as a distraction, traffic out front of my house as well, and Charli did great obeying and understanding her tasks! I have used the techniques on my own at the park and my dog does great with longer implied stays til I break her from it, even with people and dogs walking about us. Charli has gotten more confident doing "place" on taller retaining walls, objects at the park, and even are still working on a closer proximity to visitors at home, men in general, and vehicles, learning to understand they are not scary. Once we wrap up the in home sessions we will move on to the group sessions, which we look forward to the added distractions and confidence building. Big thanks to Cat for being a great trainer and teaching us how to better train our pup. With continued work, she is going to be an even more exceptional companion/pet, and hopefully move her along into service dog training as well. We definitely recommend them for training your pet.

We have been dealing with some food aggression with our 6 month old lab. Jordan and Atlas have been incredibly helpful as we work through this. Jordan has gone above and beyond texting and talking with us whenever we have questions or concerns. He has spent extra time at our appointments really giving his all to make sure we have an amazing dog. Thank you Jordan and Atlas for caring about our puppy and us. We appreciate it so much and would absolutely recommend Dog Training Elite to anyone.

We completed our 8 in home sessions with Dog Training Elite and they were fantastic. We worked with a few different trainers but Kyler was our main trainer and he was great from start to finish. Kyler was always punctual and well prepared. He was very patient and intentional about building a relationship with T’Challa. He always made sure we understood the assignment for that session as well as our homework. Before we started each session Kyler always asked how the week went and if there were any areas of struggle that we needed to spend additional time on. Kyler has a balanced approach to training that was so effective for us. He pushed us and T’Challa into areas where it was uncomfortable but that’s where we experienced the most growth and success. T’Challa is a 7 month old European Doberman through and through…..highly intelligent and incredibly stubborn so he had his hands full. By the end of training today we are able to walk him without risk of him dislocating our shoulder from pulling so hard, we can go in public with other dogs barking and lunging at him and he doesn’t react at all, he knows all obedience commands and responds pretty consistently. We are so proud of his progress and can’t wait to start group training.

I can’t say enough about Dog Training Elite. My pup, Stormi, had issues with chasing rabbits/squirrels and with being nervous around other dogs. Thanks to DTE, she actually listens and obeys. I can open the door, and take her for walks without worrying I am going to lose her. As importantly, she now plays with the neighborhood dogs instead of cowering in fear. Many thanks to all the staff at DTE, particularly Luke, Meghan, Jordan, and Atlas.

Kyler is amazing! My girl is a typical GSD/Lab mix with very high energy we got her back in January from the shelter and the first thing she did when we got home was jump up onto the kitchen counters and dining table which is bar top height he fixed this bad habit in one session. She loved every single training session with Kyler and she is now trained as my service dog.

Dog training elite is the 3rd training service I've tried for my reactive dog. By far, this has been the most progress that I've seen in my dog thanks to Dog Training Elite! The trainers are very knowledgeable and can help break down what your dog is feeling and why they are reacting in certain ways. They provide information about what you as the handler need to do for a successful training program. We have yet to start the group sessions, but I'm extremely impressed. They've helped answer all my questions so the unique challenges I face were addressed. I am very grateful to have found them and for all of their time and support. I utilized the payment plan option - money well spent!

Training with Dog Training Elite has been everything I asked for and more. My dog and I have regained our trust and confidence in each other, and I have learned so much more about how to interact and communicate with my dog. Jordan and Kyler have been incredible trainers. They do not spare any detail when teaching they’re training process and always go the extra mile to insure I am confident and have a full understanding of what we went over in each training session. I would recommend them to my friends and family that are looking for exceptional dog training.

I would recommend learning from Dog Training Elite. They have wonderfully professional trainers who are focused on ensuring a safe and effective learning environment for your dog. Cat and Felicity were wonderful! Their own dogs are also amazingly trained and were exactly what Einstein needed to help him build his confidence around other dogs. They listen to what you need and help you build that relationship to help bring both you and your dog together!
