There is so much to love about puppies. They’re adorable, snuggly, loving and playful. But puppies also come with some destructive behaviors — accidents inside the house, chewing on things they aren’t supposed to, and perhaps worst of all, biting.

Biting, or “mouthing,” is part of how a puppy learns about the world. It’s often meant to be a playful behavior, but those sharp little teeth can hurt! Here are a few tips on how to stop puppy biting in Fort Worth, even in a playful way.

Our Balanced Theory

We base our training around the "Classical Conditioning" model (a.k.a. "Pavlovian" or "respondent conditioning"). This includes developing conditioned or automatic reflexes to commands. In its simplest form (after proper conditioning), when the owner says "sit," the dog automatically sits without thinking about it. Our unique techniques ensure our program is a success no matter what behavior we encounter.

  • Empowering Owners
We empower Owners to train so their dog knows who to obey at all times.
  • Personalized
We deal with problem behaviors on a personal basis.
  • Environment Specific
We train wherever issues tend to arise (i.e. jogging, park, home).
  • Supportive
We support Owners in the off-hours (when training is "not in session").
  • Involved
We work with all members of the household.
  • Simplified & Customized
We plan training around the owner's schedule and require only 20 min/day follow-up practice.
  • Continued Training
Additional programs / group sessions offered after in-home training.
  • Lifetime Investment
We follow up & are invested in the owner's success long-term.
  • Satisfaction Ratings
Our high client satisfaction rating sets us apart from competitors.

I would recommend learning from Dog Training Elite. They have wonderfully professional trainers who are focused on ensuring a safe and effective learning environment for your dog. Cat and Felicity were wonderful! Their own dogs are also amazingly trained and were exactly what Einstein needed to help him build his confidence around other dogs. They listen to what you need and help you build that relationship to help bring both you and your dog together!

DTE has been a great decision for me & my wife to choose for training our 11 month Cane Corso puppy Rocco. Our most challenging trainer Jordan and his amazing Rottweiler Atlas have been really instrumental in Rocco’s growth and development through the program. We definitely recommend Jordan and DTE for anyone looking for a solid trainer and comprehensive training program for their dog.

I came to them with a dog that I could not even walk on a leash, she was a good girl but just pulled to the point of choking herself out. I could not "communicate" with her on any level, and she barely could hold a sit - not because she did not know the command but more she just didn't want to. When I moved to Texas, this was the last hope really, for my girl and I. If the trainers could not help her, I was going to be forced to rehome her. I gave Dog Training Elite a call, and all I can say is magic happened. They are amazing, it was pure magic. I first got a dog that I could walk, talk to, and give commands to. She stopped jumping on everyone that even glanced at her, she stopped trying to choke herself out every time she was on a leash. Stormy, turned into a different dog. The trainers were great, in that they worked with me, explained everything, they were so very patient with me every step of the way and the fears I had even walking my own dog. Even if it meant just walking around my apartment complex for the training session or a part of it to reinforce that I COULD do it, and Stormy could too. Once we graduated from obedience training, Storm and I moved into Service Dog training - which I fully admit, I was doubtful. I did not think my demon dog could do it. Or at least the wild child that she was couldn't do it. But once more, these guys proved me wrong and proved I should have far more confidence in my dog. My girl, loves to work. She loves to learn. She is going above and beyond to do her job now - and she is learning without much issues but every time there is a issue if I call up these trainers they are here for me, questions, concerns, or even to come back out to my place and work with me on the issue. Storm got her public access awhile ago but I was still scared, and it was today that I finally went out somewhere I WANTED to go, not somewhere I needed to go. Of course, Storm went with me and because of her - I was able to do it. I didn't feel the need to run, or leave, and I did it. I did what I set out to do. It sounds so little, but it was freedom. A freedom that was gifted to me through my dog, by these guys. I recommend these trainers for everyone. They care about you, and most importantly your dog. Their trainers are amazing, best of the best, they will answer any and all of your questions with ease and patience. They will work with you no matter what issues or concerns you have. I can not state how much they have meant to me, because of them once more I can start living. I will forever be grateful. Please give them a chance to save your dog, and your sanity. 100/10 stars.

We had a wonderful experience with Dog Training Elite. Jordan was an incredible trainer He was patient, thorough, and very effective, even in teaching my 14 year old son to training his dog. Also Jordan’s dog Atlas is so well trained and a perfect addition to the value of the training to have him along as a serious distraction! We’re so grateful for the help. Our dog is doing wonderfully with his training progress!

Since we have found this place our dog’s behavior has improved so much. Jordan is so easy to work with and our dog Violet responds great to him. He is very thorough and detailed with every direction. He is very clear to show every step and guide us through the training when it is our turn to take the lead. He answers the questions we have with great detail and gives great examples. He is also very patient and kind with our dog. His dog Atlas is the best example for how we want our dog to be. Just seeing how well behaved and trained his dog is shows us exactly how we want our dog to be. He is hands down a great trainer.

Jordan was great at each training session. He helped us problem solve some of our unique scenarios with our special needs son and our dog Jack. He was calm and patient and very good at explaining things in a way we could understand especially as it was happening in the moment . He was punctual and communicated well. His dog Atlas was cool and helped several times during our sessions. It’s been a great experience so far and so happy to have a dog that walks well on and off leash and is well mannered around people .

One could not possibly understand what their dogs are capable of (or what they aren’t capable) of until they sit in an evaluation with the trainers from Elite! They where able to pin both of our dogs MJ (American bulldog pit bull) and Rex’s (dobermanlab) personalities and there has been a positive night and day difference since day 1! (Literally Rex ignored a cat 1 foot away and a beautiful dog the trainer brought to distract him!) We have made it 4 weeks in so far and the dogs have learned come, (which addressed their issue with jumping on people and kept them from trying to run out the door every time it’s open!) sit (which has allowed us to better control them and set the mood before we walk out to take them on a walk, to go potty and in the car) place (which has been one of my favorite commands since it establishes where they should be when your talking to someone, when your watching tv and keeps them out of trouble) then this week we learned Heel 🐾 my American bulldog pit bull is 9 months and I normally have to hand her to my husband for walking because of how strong she is, however today I was able to walk her with complete ease for the first time ever! 🥹 as someone who plays Pokémongo and wants her dog with her this is the dream! Trey has been great from the start and helped set clear expectations while also educating us on how to properly communicate with our fur baby Jordan has worked with us twice and he’s been beyond fantastic with explaining why we train the way we do and the homework is always clear and honestly it’s been curing my dogs confidence issues (she was a rescue who went to two different kennels before we met her) she’s shown the most change and I absolutely love it, Rex has honestly been a stud he has done WAY better then I thought he would and I honestly contribute it to how amazing the trainers have been. I can’t wait to continue training with them and look forward to seeing how everything looks at the end! Can’t suggest Dog Training Elite more and definitely recommend that if you have a dog you use the free in home evaluation!

Hiring Dog Training Elite helped us mitigate the destructive issues we were having with our fur babies. We have two beautiful, mischievous miniature poodles that lacked discipline. We worked with trainer, Jordan Benitez. Jordan had a very focused and hands on approach. He accessed our situation and personalized training to fit our needs. He was very consistent and intentional in his training method. He provided great advice that helped us manage through the bad behavioral issues. Jordan’s help proved that investing in training was worth it. We highly recommend Jordan!

Wow! Jordan is a great coach.! He seriously acts out the persona of the dog and you (the dog parent) so that it’s so easy to learn. I live with my parents and my yapping and uncontrollable dog would make my parents so upset at me. This was my first dog ever too. Jordan helped me so much. My parents can’t stop thanking me for going to Dog Training Elite because of Jordan! My dog used to be really bad.

We have truly enjoyed all the trainers at DTE. We have 4 young children and 3 other dogs besides the dog we are training. To say the trainers are exceptional is an understatement. Jordan is a family favorite. He is so patient and calm and does an outstanding job. He even braved Home Depot with our family of 6 to train Bella. We are impressed with her progress and couldn’t be happier with our choice of trainers. Thank you!

Are you looking for the best means out there to train your dog? You’ve found it!! I highly recommend Dog Training Elite. I took their at-home program which includes unlimited access to group sessions at their facility as desired. I adopted a 2YO dachshund/pitt mix from the pound with some sass and bad habits who was getting love but needed some structure and stability. DTE helped me not merely teach my dog useful, everyday commands but also build a trust and respect with her that has helped us build a wonderful life together! Now I can take her out with me anywhere dogs are welcome! Special shout out to our trainer, Jordan! He always did an amazing job of reading when my dog needed to be pushed or if she was truly at her limit. He was also very supportive of me as a trainer, giving advice unique to our situation and encouraging insight into life with his own dog.

As an owner of two Doberman puppies, we knew we needed a trainer that is extremely strong, knowledgeable and consistent to work with us and our dogs. We unfortunately attempted a board and train that was not successful, with a different company. We needed someone that would meet not only our dogs needs but our needs, in the home. Yuni came in for the evaluation and she heard all of our wants and needs. We knew immediately we wanted to work with this team because of her professionalism, knowledge, and understanding. Kyler then showed up and changed our lives. He was able to work with our dogs, teach us so much about how to properly train them, and showed so much strength and patience throughout the process. Kyler has become such an important person in our lives. We truly love how Dog Training Elite has been so available to us to answer any and all questions and to be of constant support. We continue to grow and learn in group training classes and enjoy meeting other well trained dogs and parents. We have the most amazing behavior because of the hard work and guidance. Thank so much Kyler!!!

Would first say that I highly recommend these guys. At first I had a very hard time getting in touch with anybody by phone which was very frustrating as I would have liked to actually speak with someone but somebody did eventually reach out via text to get everything set up. We were looking to get assistance training a service dog for my daughter. We had done a lot of work but needed help to progress. We were working with a company already but not getting the results we needed. We worked with Kyler exclusively because my daughter felt comfortable with him and trusted him which is very important in her situation. So that was a request from us that he be the only trainer. Kyler is an amazing trainer and an amazing human. He was very sensitive to and respectful of my daughter's struggles. Which, as a mother, I cannot thank you enough. Our dog is excellent, consistent and reliable and we could not have done it without the assistance of this company. On a personal note, Kyler you have truly changed my daughter's life for the better and we are so so grateful. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

We got a rescue dog that was just over a year old and was never trained. She would bolt out of the back gate given ANY chance. After the first personal training session she never did it again. I can leave the gate wide open and she never looks at it. I can now have her in the front yard with me and she listens to everything I tell her to do. All the trainers are very knowledgeable and can help you and your dog work through any problems you are having. You do have homework though. 15-30.minutes a day of training with your puppy/dog. The training WILL NOT work as well if you don't do the homework.

How to Get a Puppy to Stop Biting? Teach them that Biting Hurts

Getting a puppy to quit mouthing is actually very simple. You just have to teach your puppy that biting hurts.

How do you teach this? By helping your puppy learn “bite inhibition.” Bite inhibition is a puppy or a dog’s ability to control how hard they bite. Typically puppies learn bite inhibition from playing with other puppies. Biting or mouthing is a common play tactic between puppies and dogs, but occasionally a puppy will bite too hard. This causes their playmate to yelp with pain and stop playing.

The reaction of the bitten puppy helps the puppy who did the biting realize their mistake and learn not to bite so hard. Just like puppies learn how to be gentle with each other, they can learn the same lesson from humans. Even if your puppy has learned bite inhibition while playing with other puppies or dogs, they still need to be taught how sensitive human skin is.

Follow the example of your puppy’s playmates. Let your puppy mouth your hands during play. When they bite you too hard, yelp like a puppy and let your hand go limp to indicate that you have been hurt. This should stop your puppy from continuing to bite you or continuing to play. When they stop, or if they attempt to make you feel better by licking your hand, praise your puppy and resume play. You can also try “time-outs” for your puppy, where you stop playing for 20 seconds after being bitten.

The goal is to teach your puppy that if they bite, playing stops. If they are gentle, play continues. Make sure to reward your puppy with praise and possibly treats when they do a good job. At Dog Training Elite, we know positive reinforcement is the best and most effective way to train puppies and dogs.

Take it to the Next Level

Once your puppy understands that they shouldn’t bite human skin hard, start working on teaching them not to bite human skin at all. Use the same techniques of yelping and stopping play. Over time, gradually reduce the amount of biting you allow until your puppy eventually learns not to bite at all.

Some other techniques for to stop mouthing include the distraction method. If your puppy tends to want to bite you when you pet him, distract him with treats so he’ll get used to being touched without mouthing your hands or arms. Keep your puppy’s favorite toy with you, and if she starts mouthing your hands, give her the toy to bite instead.

What to Avoid

There are some behaviors we humans tend to engage in when we want to play with puppies that actually encourage them to bite. If you’re at a loss for how to stop a puppy from biting, make sure to avoid these habits:

  • Avoid wiggling your fingers or toes in your puppy’s face to entice them to play. This encourages your puppy to bite your hands and feet.
  • Don’t jerk your hands away from your puppy if they bite you. They might lunge forward to grab you with their mouth.
  • Never slap or hit a puppy for biting. This ineffective and cruel and can backfire as a training method. Your puppy might start to play more aggressively, with more biting, or they can become afraid of you.

At Dog Training Elite, we never use physical punishment to train puppies and dogs. We focus on rewarding desired behaviors. This method of training helps build a strong, loving bond between puppies and their owners.
