Positive Dog Training Techniques

Cincinnati Positive Reinforcement Dog Trainers

Research shows that focusing on positive reinforcement when a desired behavior occurs and not worrying about correcting bad behavior in dogs is more effective and has longer-lasting results than training that incorporates punishment for bad behavior.

Positive reinforcement dog training in Cincinnati, OH works because dogs are inherently eager to please. Rewarding your dog for good behavior helps create a deep, loving relationship with your dog built on trust, as opposed to one built on fear of punishment. The difference between a dog who has been trained to obey out of fear of being punished vs. a dog who learns to obey through a positive, loving bond with their owner is huge.

Dog Training Elite Greater Cincinnati trainers use treats as an initial reward for puppies and dogs learning commands. When the trainer is absent, or you’re in between obedience classes, you can continue to use treats as a reward for your dog when they exhibit a desired behavior. Dogs tend to be highly food-motivated, so this is an extremely useful tool. You can also reward your dog with a play session, take them to the dog park or anything else you know your dog enjoys. After all, you know your dog best!

As for not worrying about bad behavior – it may feel strange to act like everything is fine when your dog chews on your shoes, or goes to the bathroom inside your home. But focusing on rewarding good behavior and forgoing punishment for bad behavior is more successful in the long run.

Relying on punishment for errors and “low value” rewards, such as praise or petting are long held “traditional” methods for dog training. Punishments like flicking a dog’s nose, shocking them with a shock collar, or anything else that may cause a dog pain are unfortunately still in use today by many dog trainers.

Not only is it inhumane, but using punishment as a tool can actually backfire. For example: punishing a dog for going to the bathroom inside a house won’t teach them to go outside instead. Often, the dog only understands that the mess makes their owner mad. Instead of going outside, the dog is likely to continue to make messes indoors — where the owner can’t find them.

Punishment training also damages the relationship between dog and owner. Dogs do not understand right and wrong. Instead of associating punishment with a specific behavior they learn to avoid, as with the bathroom example, they instead learn to live in constant fear of punishment. This prevents owners from bonding with their dogs in a meaningful way.

Dog Training Elite Greater Cincinnati uses modern training methods focused on positive dog training using reinforcement and bonding you and your dog. Our trainers in Cincinnati, OH never resort to punishment to help dogs unlearn behaviors. Through a combination of commands and an electronic collar, dogs learn to follow commands at once. The electronic collar is not a shock collar and never used to punish bad behavior. Instead, it produces a sensation like the gentle tug of a leash, and is used to help recapture the attention of a dog who gets distracted.

Dog Training Elite Greater Cincinnati’s method of focusing on positive behavior reinforcement nurtures a dog's loving and naturally obedient nature. The method is the same regardless of the situation, whether training a puppy, an older dog or a service dog. I’ve worked with Scott for about a month now, and it’s been time well spent. He’s a great trainer: calm, patient, and a fun personality dogs really respond to. We’re three sessions in, and it’s already made a big difference in my anxious GSD’s confidence, which is a huge relief to me. Excellent training philosophy!

Scott and Jen are AMAZING to work with. When they came to the house to meet us and evaluate my Neko, they took the time to get to know her, her personality, and listened to my concerns about Neko's behavior and my expectations about her training. Scott gave me a couple of tips and things to do with her that I started on following their initial visit. I could already see a change in her behavior. I was nervous about how Neko would act at our first group session, but her behavior had changed so much (for the better) that I actually cried tears of joy when it was over. I cannot thank both of them enough and am extremely grateful to them for their understanding, help, and support. You cannot go wrong with DTE!

We highly recommend Scott and Jenn at Dog Training Elite! We started training with them when our puppy, Hudson, was very young, and the progress he's made has been amazing. Hudson is now working toward his service dog certification, and we couldn't have asked for better trainers. Between the one-on-one sessions and group classes, Scott and Jenn gave both Hudson and me the tools and confidence to succeed. They are knowledgeable, supportive, and truly invested in helping both the dog and the owner. We are so grateful for everything they've done and highly recommend Dog Training Elite to anyone looking for exceptional training.

Dog Training Elite with Scott and Jen has been an amazing experience for both my dog Baxter and myself. Since starting with DTE, Baxter has experienced leaps and bounds with his training in both basic obedience but also for certification. They are very knowledgeable, personable, and ensures the owner has the right tools and tricks to help them and their dog succeed.

We were preventing our Golden Retriever from living her best life: she has a STRONG drive to visit with any human or dog within 100 yards. Her urges put her in many unsafe situations with moving traffic and uncomfortable non-dog lovers. After an unsuccessful session of obedience school, we took a leap of faith investing in DTE. We are so glad we did, and after a few short weeks with the team, our dog's potential became so obvious that we pursued a therapy certification. Now we have the ability to bring joy to others in nursing homes and schools while allowing our dog to do her heart's desire: visit with others. People are amazed at her behavior and compliment us often. And, I no longer worry about her darting across the street on our daily 1 mile off-leash walks! The investment was SO worth it!

Dog Training Elite (Scott and Jen) are truly exceptional. They are knowledgeable, down-to-earth, practical, and incredibly supportive throughout the entire training process. We just completed their puppy courses and now feel confident that our puppy has a strong foundation for the next stage of training. What sets them apart is not only their expertise, but also their kindness, patience, and genuine care for both the dogs and their owners. They are trustworthy, encouraging, and clearly passionate about what they do. Every session was organized, helpful, and tailored in a way that made training feel manageable and successful. I truly can’t say enough positive things about Scott, Jen, and the services they provide. We are so grateful for everything we learned and highly recommend Dog Training Elite to anyone looking for high-quality, effective dog training.

Scott was absolutely amazing! Patient, kind, and knowledgeable. My dog had a biting incident and while most would've thought this dog needs major help, Scott met with him and saw my dog just needed a few minor corrections and not some overly expensive, drawn out training program. Couldn't recommend someone better!

Fantastic experience with Scott and Jen! Helping us take back the control of our middle aged dogs at our own home where the behaviors are seen naturally. No boarding or over charging, honest and fair estimates. And giving you and your dog their full attention at every session, moving at the pace you are comfortable with. It’s never too late to teach your old dogs new tricks with their help!

This training program not only works it makes sense to both my dog and I! Yes most people can have relatively good dogs on their own. (I had 3) However-WOW, you don’t realize the true potential of your dog until you are in this program. I am definitely regretting skipping professional training with my first 3 pups!!! Augie and I are loving this program and can’t wait to start our journey as a therapy team.
