Therapy Dog Training in Boston, MA

What is a Therapy Dog?

A therapy dog is trained to provide emotional support and comfort to people in need, often visiting hospitals, nursing homes, and schools. These dogs must be friendly with strangers, able to handle high levels of distraction, and understand personal boundaries like not jumping, licking, or mouthing. With proper training, therapy dogs can bring joy and emotional relief to those they interact with, offering companionship in stressful environments.

At Dog Training Elite, we specialize in therapy dog training in Boston, MA, helping dogs develop the temperament and skills needed to provide emotional support and comfort in a variety of settings. Our customized programs are designed to guide you and your dog through the certification process with compassion and professionalism. Whether your goal is to visit hospitals, schools, or community centers, we ensure your dog is well-prepared to offer calm, dependable companionship to those in need. With our expert training methods, your dog can become a confident and trusted therapy companion in the Boston community.

How Does a Dog Become a Therapy Dog?

While the companionship your dog brings you may inspire you to share that with others, not every dog is suited to be a therapy animal. Beyond a friendly, loving personality, several important qualifications must be met for a dog to be considered for therapy work:

  • Age: Puppies are typically too energetic and lack the focus to be therapy dogs.
  • Obedience: A therapy dog must follow commands reliably. Dogs that have completed obedience training with Dog Training Elite have the solid foundation needed to begin therapy dog training.
  • Social Skills: Therapy dogs need to naturally enjoy meeting new people and must handle being petted and approached by strangers without anxiety. Their ability to remain calm and friendly, even in unfamiliar situations, ensures they can provide emotional support to those they interact with.

We tried other trainers before DTE and there is no comparison with the work DTE team does. After the first session my puppy was already feeling more confident and responding to the commands. We appreciate the approach of Jocy and Alaina. They were excellent to Niko and us. They pushed us to learn and do our best to train Niko. We just loved the program. I also want to highlight the group class. We attended one so far but we loved and it is very helpful for Niko. Thank you so much!!

Dog Training Elite has been nothing short of incredible. I honestly can’t say enough good things about their team and the results they’ve helped us achieve. When we started, my dog had plenty of areas that needed work—but through their structured training, patience, and clear guidance, everything changed. They don’t just train your dog—they teach you how to communicate effectively, which made all the difference. The trainers are professional, knowledgeable, and genuinely care about your dog’s success. What really stands out is the transformation. My dog has gone from needing direction to being confident, obedient, and reliable in a variety of environments. Thanks to Dog Training Elite, he’s now at the point where he’s ready to take a therapy dog test—which I never would have imagined before starting. If you’re on the fence, don’t be. This program works. It’s an investment that pays off in every aspect of your dog’s behavior and your relationship with them. Highly recommend.

My daughter and I absolutely love Kayle! She is clear in her directions, and will even change how she says it if my daughter doesn’t understand. Without even asking she will explain why/reason to whatever she is working on with my daughter and our dog. She is an excellent source of knowledge and so sweet

My dog Cannoli had amazing results with Dog Training Elite. He is about a year and a half we had already done training on basics but he was still very timid around new people and reactive at dogs we passed by on walks. With Dog Training Elite we had multiple trainers work with us over his first few sessions which was a great way to get him to overcome his fears of new people and people entering our home. For the second half of his private session we worked with Rich who was amazing with Cannoli. He was patient when Cannoli needed, he saw immediate potential with Cannoli. Rich really personalized the experience to Cannoli, his needs, and pushed him past his comfort zone in a safe and exciting way that has allowed Cannoli to become a confident dog. Having the trainers personal dog join some of the sessions was a great opportunity for us to overcome reactivity and was a great tool for Cannoli. Now we feel confident moving into the group classes!

Jason and Syanne have been amazing and I couldn’t ask for a better experience. They are working with my family and I to train my puppy Finn to be a psychiatric service dog. I’ve been with them for about a year now. They both never fail to make me laugh and make training fun. As someone with a lot of anxiety, they do such a great job at making a fun and safe environment. Jason is always available to answer questions and always answers in such detail and I have learned so much from him. Jason is extremely knowledgeable and very kind. I’m so grateful my family and I chose this training with them and I would highly recommend them for any training with your dog! It’s always so fun to see everyone and their dogs at group class too!!

Tiffany was great! She helped tremendously with my stubborn Chihuahua, Vivian. She introduced a new and somewhat scary prong collar to my dog to help with correcting her jumping and lunging and barking at nearby dogs and people and worked on walking up and down my hallways which always was a HUGE issue before using a regular collar and even a martingale collar. She would literally choke herself and be panting but continue to lunge, pull, and bark, all in her back two legs at anyone walking by or even trucks, school busses, or regular cars driving by. Anyways, Tiffany is so great! We have been working with Laydon, and there was a schedule conflict this week and Tiffany came, and I was so impressed. With switching between Laydon and Tiffany I was apprehensive about it, but after this training session, I am completely confident that Vivian and I will get the proper techniques and training that we signed up for and need! Although I’ve only met those two trainers thus far, (and today was week 4), I believe Dog Training Elite has the best trainers around! I feel confident that if Laydon ever has another conflict with our pre-scheduled training sessions, and Tiffany isn’t available either, that anyone will be able to read over the notes about Vivian and to do the session without any hesitation as well as fit right in with Vivian’s sassy attitude, stubbornness, fiestiness and learning style. Thanks Tiffany!! And thank you Dog Training Elite!!!

Benefits of Therapy Dogs

Therapy dogs have a profound impact on individuals’ emotional and physical well-being. Research demonstrates that therapy dogs can improve a patient's mood, reduce stress, and even lower pain levels during hospital stays or medical treatments. Their calming presence provides comfort and relief in challenging moments.

Children, in particular, often respond well to therapy dogs. The companionship and playful interaction of a therapy dog can motivate children to engage more fully in treatments, helping them overcome fear or reluctance. With a therapy dog by their side, children tend to feel more optimistic and less anxious.

Beyond medical settings, therapy dogs also foster social interaction, especially in autism and mental health communities. These dogs offer non-judgmental companionship and serve as a bridge for individuals who may struggle with social connections. By reducing feelings of loneliness and anxiety, therapy dogs offer their owners comfort and companionship that enhances the overall quality of life.

ESA vs. Therapy vs. Service Animals

What's the Difference?

Animals that provide assistance and companionship can be classified into three main groups: service animals, emotional support animals (ESAs), and therapy animals. Each has different responsibilities, training requirements, and legal protections. Knowing the differences can help you choose the right type of support for a disability, emotional needs, or therapy purposes.

Here are the defining features of each type:

Service animals are trained to help individuals by performing tasks that meet their specific needs, such as:

  • Redirecting attention when an individual is beginning to feel overstimulated
  • Reminding owners to take medication
  • Waking someone who is having a nightmare

Service dogs are highly valued in the mental health and disability community and are protected under ADA laws, allowing them to accompany their owners anywhere. At DTE, we provide specialized training for service dogs that assist individuals with autism, diabetes, and PTSD.

The key difference between ESAs, therapy dogs, and service dogs is that service animals are protected by the Americans with Disabilities Act. This means they are allowed to go anywhere their owner goes. ESAs and therapy dogs do not have the same protections as service dogs, and public places can set their own rules about allowing them.

ESAs are prescribed by licensed mental health professionals to help individuals with mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression. These animals provide emotional support simply by being a comforting presence. Unlike service dogs, ESAs are not trained to perform specific tasks related to their owner's condition.

ESAs can be of any breed or age, and while they do not require the same level of training as service dogs, many owners choose to seek additional training. This can help strengthen the bond between the owner and the animal and improve the ESA's ability to provide consistent emotional support in different situations.

Therapy animals provide comfort and emotional support to individuals in need. They are not trained to assist a single person but are instead taught to be well-behaved and sociable around various groups of people. These animals help reduce stress, anxiety, and loneliness for those they visit.

Unlike service animals, therapy animals are not required to perform specific tasks. Their calming presence is what makes them valuable in therapeutic programs.
