A therapy dog is a dog who visits places like schools, hospitals and nursing homes. Therapy dog training in Salt Lake City teaches dogs to provide comfort, support, and affection to the people they meet, particularly vulnerable people like children, seniors, patients in hospitals, and so on.

Therapy dogs are not service dogs. Service dogs are trained to perform specific tasks to help a person who has a disability. This distinction is important because therapy dogs do not have the same access to public places like service dogs do. For example, service dogs can go into restaurants, but therapy dogs cannot. Therapy dogs still provide a valuable service and should receive therapy dog certification.

Dog Training Elite Salt Lake City provides therapy dog training in Salt Lake City to give people emotional support in all stages of life.

Who Do Therapy Dogs Help?

Therapy dogs may be regular visitors to a variety of people and places, with hospitals and rehabilitation centers being among the most common. Children, in particular, respond positively to therapy dogs.

Seniors in assisted living or people with mental disabilities who live in facilities and experience feelings of isolation also see a lot of benefits from visiting with a therapy dog.

Besides providing valuable social opportunities and relieving anxiety, therapy dogs may even help lower blood pressure and heart rate in patients and the other people they visit.

Why Are Therapy Dogs Important?

Therapy dogs offer unconditional love, non-judgmental interaction, reduce stress, anxiety and loneliness, and provide an overall positive distraction to ailments. Research shows therapy dogs can have a positive effect on a patient’s mood, stress and pain levels during facility stays.

Young patients — children — seem to benefit most from working with therapy dogs. They are more motivated to participate in treatments, feel optimistic about the future, and experience an overall sense of calm when a certified therapy dog is present.

For people who may have a hard time socializing due to mental disabilities or their living situation, therapy dogs can promote social interaction within their community and help them to connect.

DTE has been absolutely fantastic over the past couple years. Their staff is responsive, friendly, and professional. They are prompt to address any questions or concerns and always put in their full effort to help in any way they can. I've trained three dogs with them, and every time it's a wonderful experience!

Jake and McCall were amazing, Intuitive, patient and knowledgeable. We always thought our boy was not the brightest bulb, but Jake saw right through his deception and let us know he was lazy and stubborn and how we could work with him. We came home with a new dog and the tools to keep training him at home. Elite is worth every penny.

Dog Training Elite has been the best dog training experience ever! We had done training through other services with no results for our poor anxious girl and were slowly losing hope. Jeff and Dallin have transformed her into a confident and obedient girl! Walks are no longer a pain and our girl is thriving! I would 10/10 recommend the platinum package to anyone who has an anxious and reactive dog.

Jake and McCall were both very attentive and worked great with my pooch Taco, he responded phenomenally and I saw results literally the first day I picked him up. He was so pumped to go to school and when he got home, I was able to see improvement every single day. They met specific needs and concerns of mine while being incredibly flexible with my schedule. I’m looking forward to the group classes and to continue to build confidence and skills with my pal Taco. The hardest part of the entire process is training myself, Taco loves to work hard and continues to progress daily, it has been a great experience and I’d highly recommend their services to anyone looking for personalized training and expertise for your pooch. 10/10

I brought my new puppy Douglas in for The Whole Den puppy day camp sessions. Jake has been extremely helpful explaining how to work with Douglas and what steps I should take to ensure he is successful in further training. McCall has been wonderful with communication and happily answers every question or concern I have. Douglas became excited to go to day camp everyday. Both Douglas and myself learned valuable tips on potty training, leash walking and basic commands.

I was worried that it would be too late for my 2 year old dog, Harley, to get trained. I was also worried she wouldn't see me as her master because I am her second owner, and she seems to respond better to males. Some problems Harley had were jumping on people, pulling on the leash, and running away when I take her out to potty. I was honestly hopeless and wasn't sure if I could keep her any longer if her behavior didn't improve. After doing my research online, I decided to go with Dog Training Elite. I got the Gold Package, which was easily the best decision I could make! 5 private lessons with Jeff made Harley the most amazing dog I didn't know she could be. I also learned how to be a better owner thanks to Jeff. Jeff is super professional, enthusiastic, and Harley absolutely loved him. I highly recommend having your dog trained by this company.

My lab Bodhi (6 year old) started attacking people out of protection for me and our home. I chose the platinum package to help with his aggression and anxiety. Jeff our trainer is a miracle worker! Bodhi now has done a 180 and I feel comfortable taking him anywhere. When i had a question or needed to reschedule training, McCall was a pleasure to speak with, great customer service. Hands down, best training experience I've ever had.... and I've had several dogs throughout my life. Well worth the money, I've got my best friend back:)

Highly recommend this dog training service! The trainer comes to your house for the individual lessons, which is extremely convenient! I was able to schedule after work hours. The trainers make e-collar training so easy and help you understand that it's not hurting your dog, and how to be consistent. They know when your pup needs some extra help or when to slow down training. Dallin Renouard was our trainer for the majority of individual classes and he was excellent! He balanced praising my dog with challenging and pushing her past her normal comfort zone. He addressed all of my questions and was highly professional, dependable, and personable! I feel like I have much more control over my pup on and off leash, and happy that she has improved recall. Great training program! I'm excited to start group lessons now!

Jake and McCall were great with Roscoe, the Cairn Terrier. He started with DTE when he was 10 weeks old learning his basic commands and came back later for more advanced training (he's 8 months now). If I hadn't moved from SLC to Arizona, I would have kept Roscoe with these guys to do therapy dog training - they really do care about your dog.

We have seen such great results with this program! We loved that we could be present, and trained as well, for each weeks training protocol. The ability to do training at our home made all the difference in us choosing DTE. We appreciate Jeff and the staff for providing us the confidence we needed in caring for and handling our aggressive pup.

How Does a Dog Become a Therapy Dog?

If you have felt the benefits of owning a dog, you may feel inspired to help more people feel the unconditional love, joy and support your dog provides. However, having a friendly, loving personality isn’t enough for a dog to qualify as a therapy dog. Some other qualifications to consider are:

  • The age of your dog. Puppies do not make good therapy animals.
  • How obedient your dog is. It’s important your dog listens to you and obeys basic commands. Dogs that go through obedience training with Dog Training Elite Salt Lake City have the perfect foundation to go onto therapy dog training, as long as they are old enough.
  • How social your dog is. Your dog may be affectionate with you — but are they affectionate with strangers? Do they like to receive attention from strangers, particularly petting?

Therapy Dog Handlers

As a dog owner, it’s important to reflect on whether you would like to become a therapy dog handler as well. If you enjoy connecting with people, becoming a therapy dog handler may be a great fit. You can also choose where to volunteer to better suit your interests — if you like kids, volunteer to visit schools or children’s hospitals. If you prefer to work with older people, then sign up to visit senior living centers.

Once you’ve determined that becoming a therapy dog handler and helping your dog become a therapy dog is the right move for the two of you, you’re ready to start therapy dog training. The trainers of Dog Training Elite Salt Lake City are experts in the behaviors needed in a therapy dog and will help you and your dog either brush up on or master behaviors such as “leave it,” “watch me,” loose-leash walking and not jumping on other people.

To help your dog become well socialized, you may consider also signing up for one of Dog Training Elite Salt Lake City’s group obedience classes. A group class environment is also beneficial because it helps your dog learn to be obedient when there are a lot of distractions around, a crucial skill for a therapy dog.

Once you’ve completed initial training, you’re ready to apply for therapy dog certification in Salt Lake City. However, it is important to note that this certification is not the end. It’s important to stay on top of your dog’s training and continue to help them be the best therapy dog they can be.

By working with Dog Training Elite Salt Lake CitySalt Lake City, you will also be trained to be a therapy dog handler with your pup.
