There is so much to love about puppies. They’re adorable, snuggly, loving and playful. But puppies also come with some destructive behaviors — accidents inside the house, chewing on things they aren’t supposed to, and perhaps worst of all, biting.
Biting, or “mouthing,” is part of how a puppy learns about the world. It’s often meant to be a playful behavior, but those sharp little teeth can hurt! Here are a few tips on how to stop puppy biting in Salt Lake City, even in a playful way.

Our Balanced Theory
We base our training around the "Classical Conditioning" model (a.k.a. "Pavlovian" or "respondent conditioning"). This includes developing conditioned or automatic reflexes to commands. In its simplest form (after proper conditioning), when the owner says "sit," the dog automatically sits without thinking about it. Our unique techniques ensure our program is a success no matter what behavior we encounter.
-
Empowering Owners
We empower Owners to train so their dog knows who to obey at all times. -
Personalized
We deal with problem behaviors on a personal basis. -
Environment Specific
We train wherever issues tend to arise (i.e. jogging, park, home).
-
Supportive
We support Owners in the off-hours (when training is "not in session"). -
Involved
We work with all members of the household. -
Simplified & Customized
We plan training around the owner's schedule and require only 20 min/day follow-up practice.
-
Continued Training
Additional programs / group sessions offered after in-home training. -
Lifetime Investment
We follow up & are invested in the owner's success long-term. -

If I could give 10 starts I would. This place is amazing. I did the two-week training camp for my 8 month old puppy and I couldn't be happier with the results. The entire experience was perfect from start to finish. The training staff is incredible. They answered all my questions and took extra time and care in helping my dog be successful. Special thanks to Jake and McCall, who worked with my dog every day. You can tell they love their jobs! I would recommend them to ANYONE. Thanks again DTE!!!— Kym Hancock

I highly recommend Dog Training Elite!! Brock has made the most amazing changes in just a week! I couldn’t do this alone! Jake is incredible and patient with my pup. Even though my Lab was crazy… he’s learning how to be an absolute gentleman! I am so impressed with everything at DTE!—

Fantastic! Jake was so patient with our very stubborn dog. Great improvement could be seen with each training session. Completely worth every penny. We went to Dog Training Elite on a referral and have already passed on the referral to others. Thank you!— Heidi Bedont

I recently enrolled my Morkie, Zeus, and I couldn't be happier with the results! Kaycee was knowledgeable and helped us decide which program would be best for Zeus. Kaycee made everything seamless from scheduling, questions and payments during our 2 weeks of facility training. The training sessions were not only fun and engaging but also tailored to Zeus's individual needs and personality. Jake took the time to understand Zeus's strengths and areas that needed improvement, which made the learning process so much more effective. Zeus absolutely adored going to the training classes; it became the highlight of his week! I noticed a significant improvement in his behavior, from basic commands like "sit" and "stay" to walking politely on a leash. Beyond the training itself, the facility was clean, safe, and filled with a friendly atmosphere. It was apparent that Zeus was in excellent hands, and I felt confident leaving him in their care. I am immensely grateful to Jake and Dallin for their dedication and expertise in helping Zeus. I wholeheartedly recommend PTE to any dog owner looking to give their furry friend a positive and rewarding training experience. Thank you Jake, Dallin & Kaycee!— Courtney Schow

I still have 3 more in-home sessions as well as a bunch of group sessions I am excited to start. McCall Iorg, Jeff Slack and Dallin Renouard have all been a part of this journey and have been nothing but amazing! Couldn't have done it with out them!— Jeremy Day

I cannot express enough gratitude and admiration for the phenomenal dog training team. From the very first interaction, it was clear that this team possessed an unmatched level of expertise, dedication, and passion for what they do. I loved how my doggie (Oliver) felt safe and comfortable, paving the way for effective training and progress. Oliver absolutely loved Jake, he is awesome! He also trained with McCall and Dallin, and he enjoyed and showed immediately improvement into a well-behaved and confident companion, if you are seeking a dog training team that combines expertise, compassion and genuine love for dogs, look no further. I wholeheartedly recommend this incredible team. Definitely five-stars!! And Kaycee the administrative assistant is also a pleasure to deal with.— Gloria A

If you don’t want to read a long review - I will put it simply. If you have a dog, GET THEM TRAINED WITH DOG TRAINING ELITE! You will not regret it. If you want the long version here it is… There are not enough goods things I could say about the amazing people at DTE. We adopted our dog Margot a little over a year ago and there has been so many tears and frustrations and even thoughts that we may need to re-home her because we weren’t able to have people over, go anywhere with her, take her on walks - even just hanging out at home or cleaning the house was near impossible due to Margot’s reactivity and behavior. We are SO GLAD we found Dog Training Elite when we did because it has literally changed not only our lives, but Margot’s too. We started her trainings in January this year and have gone from pretty much never leaving the house to taking her on walks at busy parks, going to the farmers market, and she has even been able to make a dog friend just this past weekend! Not every day goes 100% perfect and there is still work to be done, but we have all the tools and continued support we need. I always know I can call the office and have any questions answered and successes celebrated when I need it. Jeff is our trainer and he is the best! Since the first time we met him at our consultation, each training session in our home, sessions at parks, group classes, etc. he has always made us comfortable, confident and calm. He has given us so much knowledge about our dog and how to advocate for her, help set her up for success, and guide her through situations where she is typically very reactive and scared. When we first started our sessions - Margot wouldn’t even look at Jeff and now when he has come to our home, she wags her tail and she also has even gone on walks successfully with his dog! We also have worked with Jake alongside Jeff at the reactive dog group classes we have attended so far and he is wonderful as well. And then there is Kaycee who works at the office who is an ACTUAL angel on earth. The week following our first session I called with questions which she, of course, answered thoroughly - and I also started crying because I was so happy with the changes we were seeing so quickly and she was so nice about my tears of happiness and relief. I have called many times since then and even had to go into the office to pick up some things a few times and every time I speak with her she is so kind and welcoming. Myself, my husband, Margot and even our friends/family will be forever grateful for this entire team! Pictured is Margot (right) with her new friend Sadie after lots of running and playing - this would not have been possible even 3 months ago.— Jessica Marsh

We are so happy with our experience with Dog Training Elite! We just finished all of our private lessons and the change we have seen in our dog is amazing. We adopted an 5 year old pit bull mix and she lacked basic obedience and was very nervous and reactive with other dogs. In working with the trainers at Dog Training Elite we have helped her learn how to navigate those stressful situations, and we have learned how to handle them as well! We are now confident taking her on walks or to parks, she is now more obedient than most the other dogs we know, and we even recently introduced to her my parent’s German Shepherd (we tried before finding Dog Training Elite without success which was one of the things that lead to us making the investment in training, but I’m telling you, with the tools they give you it’s like night and day)! She is doing so well and I can’t recommend Dog Training Elite enough! We are excited to start group lessons.—

Cielo (CeCe) and I have have gone through 2 of the trainings now. Sadly finishing the last of the at home training but happy that we will be heading to the puppy group training then on to group class sessions. McCall and Dallon were the trainer that CeCe had with the Gold Obedience in-home sessions. McCall also was the trainer with the Puppy training, she is outstanding. I will never go anywhere else for puppy/dog training as it is obvious they are very knowledgeable on training and they love there work. I recommend Dog Training Elite Salt Lake giving a 10 out 10 rating. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.— Jan Anderson

DTE in Sandy is FANTASTIC! Milo and I worked with Jeff and Jake over the last 7 months (2-week in-house training, weekly group classes, and the therapy dog certification). Constant communication between the facility and the handler. The group classes provide consistent practice for you & your dog. Milo has been the best version of himself since this training. Thank you DTE!— Madison Browne

All of the trainers are amazing to work with. They explained things to us in a way that was very easy to understand so that we were confident whenever we did our homework each night with our dog, Jango. It's been so fun watching Jango learn and grow throughout this process, we are so proud of him and are grateful for all of the trainers that worked with us. Jake, Jeff, and McCall, thank you so much! You all are amazing!— Ashlee Taylor

How to Get a Puppy to Stop Biting? Teach them that Biting Hurts
Getting a puppy to quit mouthing is actually very simple. You just have to teach your puppy that biting hurts.
How do you teach this? By helping your puppy learn “bite inhibition.” Bite inhibition is a puppy or a dog’s ability to control how hard they bite. Typically puppies learn bite inhibition from playing with other puppies. Biting or mouthing is a common play tactic between puppies and dogs, but occasionally a puppy will bite too hard. This causes their playmate to yelp with pain and stop playing.
The reaction of the bitten puppy helps the puppy who did the biting realize their mistake and learn not to bite so hard. Just like puppies learn how to be gentle with each other, they can learn the same lesson from humans. Even if your puppy has learned bite inhibition while playing with other puppies or dogs, they still need to be taught how sensitive human skin is.
Follow the example of your puppy’s playmates. Let your puppy mouth your hands during play. When they bite you too hard, yelp like a puppy and let your hand go limp to indicate that you have been hurt. This should stop your puppy from continuing to bite you or continuing to play. When they stop, or if they attempt to make you feel better by licking your hand, praise your puppy and resume play. You can also try “time-outs” for your puppy, where you stop playing for 20 seconds after being bitten.
The goal is to teach your puppy that if they bite, playing stops. If they are gentle, play continues. Make sure to reward your puppy with praise and possibly treats when they do a good job. At Dog Training Elite, we know positive reinforcement is the best and most effective way to train puppies and dogs.

Take it to the Next Level
Once your puppy understands that they shouldn’t bite human skin hard, start working on teaching them not to bite human skin at all. Use the same techniques of yelping and stopping play. Over time, gradually reduce the amount of biting you allow until your puppy eventually learns not to bite at all.
Some other techniques for to stop mouthing include the distraction method. If your puppy tends to want to bite you when you pet him, distract him with treats so he’ll get used to being touched without mouthing your hands or arms. Keep your puppy’s favorite toy with you, and if she starts mouthing your hands, give her the toy to bite instead.
What to Avoid
There are some behaviors we humans tend to engage in when we want to play with puppies that actually encourage them to bite. If you’re at a loss for how to stop a puppy from biting, make sure to avoid these habits:
- Avoid wiggling your fingers or toes in your puppy’s face to entice them to play. This encourages your puppy to bite your hands and feet.
- Don’t jerk your hands away from your puppy if they bite you. They might lunge forward to grab you with their mouth.
- Never slap or hit a puppy for biting. This ineffective and cruel and can backfire as a training method. Your puppy might start to play more aggressively, with more biting, or they can become afraid of you.
At Dog Training Elite, we never use physical punishment to train puppies and dogs. We focus on rewarding desired behaviors. This method of training helps build a strong, loving bond between puppies and their owners.
