Obedience Training from DTE

The First Step Toward Dog Agility Training in Knoxville, TN

Agility is a fast-paced sport that involves guiding dogs through different obstacle courses. The best candidates for this type of training are energetic, athletic dogs with a strong drive to work and learn, such as Border Collies, Australian Shepherds, Shetland Sheepdogs, Jack Russell Terriers, and Belgian Malinois. However, any dog with enthusiasm, focus, and basic obedience training can benefit from agility exercises.

Many owners choose DTE for basic obedience before starting dog agility training in Knoxville, TN. While we don’t offer competition-level training, our obedience programs help build key skills like focus, impulse control, and responsiveness.

Our trainers will work closely with you throughout the obedience program, ensuring your dog masters fundamental commands and you feel confident to continue agility training on your own.

Why Start Obedience Training Before Agility Training?

Dog Training Elite

Agility training demands focus, discipline, and responsiveness. Before tackling obstacle courses, dogs need a solid foundation in obedience to ensure they can follow commands, stay engaged, and work as a team with their handler.

Here’s how obedience training with Dog Training Elite sets dogs up for success in agility:

Agility courses can be full of distractions, including large crowds, other dogs, and loud noises. Obedience training teaches your dog to stay focused on you and respond to commands, even in high-energy environments.

Agility courses require dogs to pause and wait at key thresholds, such as the start line, and only move when directed. Obedience training reinforces patience and discipline through commands like “sit,” “heel,” and “down,” ensuring your dog stays focused and follows the rules of the sport.

Obedience training deepens trust and communication between dog and handler, making teamwork in agility training much more effective. A confident dog is more likely to take on new challenges with enthusiasm.

Before dogs can learn agility-specific commands, they must first master basic obedience. Training in focus, recall, and impulse control lays the groundwork for advanced commands like “jump,” “tunnel,” “weave,” and “climb.”

At Dog Training Elite, we don’t teach advanced agility commands, but our training makes it easier for your dog to learn and respond to agility training in the future.

If your dog has mastered basic obedience and you're interested in starting agility training on your own, understanding what obstacles to train for is the first place to start.

Here are some common agility challenges and training tips:

Jumps

Dogs must leap over hurdles at varying heights without knocking the bar down. In competitions, jumps can include single bars, double jumps, and tire jumps.

  • Training Tip: Start with low jumps and use treats or toys to guide your dog over. Gradually increase height as their confidence and ability grows.

Weave Poles

Dogs weave through a series of upright poles in a precise pattern. This is one of the most challenging agility obstacles, requiring speed, flexibility, and precise footwork.

  • Training Tip: Use a lure-and-reward method or guide your dog through the poles with a leash. Begin with wider pole spacing and narrow the gaps as your dog improves.

Tunnels

Dogs run through enclosed tunnels, which can be straight or curved. Some dogs may hesitate at first, especially if they are unfamiliar with dark or enclosed spaces.

  • Training Tip: Start with a short, straight tunnel and use treats or a favorite toy to encourage your dog through. Gradually introduce curved tunnels to increase difficulty.

A-Frame & Dog Walk

These obstacles require dogs to climb, balance, and descend elevated surfaces. The A-frame is a tall, triangular ramp, while the dog walk is a narrow, elevated plank with ramps on both ends. Both require precise foot placement and body control.

  • Training Tip: Use a leash or hand signals to guide your dog slowly up and down. Reward calm, controlled movements to prevent them from rushing or jumping off too soon.

I also want to give a huge shoutout to Kaitlin at Elite Dog Training Knoxville. She recently started joining our training sessions, and she has been absolutely wonderful. One moment that really stood out to me was during a training session at Market Square in downtown Knoxville. Another dog unexpectedly ran up to my dog and made him uncomfortable. Before the situation could escalate, Caitlin reacted immediately. Her reflexes were incredibly quick, and she stepped in right away to create space and make sure both dogs were safe. It was very impressive to watch and showed just how attentive and aware she is of her surroundings at all times. Not only is Kaitlin knowledgeable and professional, but she is also genuinely kind and caring. She takes the time to help both dogs and owners feel comfortable and confident throughout the training process. I am so grateful for everything Kaitlin and Rhett have done for my dog and me. Their dedication, knowledge, and support have made such a positive difference, and I cannot thank them enough. If you’re considering dog training, you’re in excellent hands with this team.

I can’t recommend Rhett at Elite Dog Training Knoxville enough! I’ve been working with him since my second session, and he has been absolutely amazing throughout the entire process. Rhett is incredibly knowledgeable and supportive. He takes the time to explain not only what to do, but why it works, and he’s given me so many helpful tips and tricks to keep my dog well-behaved both during training and at home. Every session, I learn something new about my dog and how to communicate with him more effectively. The biggest transformation has been in my dog’s behavior and confidence. He went from being a complete brat to becoming a smart, well-mannered boy. Rhett does an excellent job of coaching and correcting whenever either the owner or the dog makes a mistake, which is something I really appreciate. He holds both you and your dog accountable, and that consistency makes all the difference. If you’re looking for a trainer who genuinely cares, knows what he’s doing, and gets results, Rhett is the person to work with. Thank you for helping my dog and me become a better team!

Rhett was fabulous!! Our six month dog had no awareness of his back legs couldn’t jump on the couch. I had to pick him up and carry him into the car. He couldn’t jump down from the couch or off the bed. In one session, Duke learned “place”. He had him jumping on top of picnic tables. Sitting and staying in this place. Took us to the car and trained him getting in and out of the car by himself. I didn’t think Duke could do it and I was so impressed!!! Getting him trained with this company and with him has been absolutely wonderful and highly recommend it. So much gets done in just one session. He talks you through everything. You understand the process of the way the brain works with the dog and the reasonings behind how they’re training them and why they do it that way. Five stars all the way, and if I could give more, I would! Lauren Unger

Rhett is knowledgeable and can explain things in a clear and understandable manner without being condescending. I left today thinking my dog is not failing because I was about to give up on her becoming a service dog.

Parker was amazing! Even showed us a few training skills he has on out dog. She immediately knew he was a dog person when he walked in. Couldn't leave him alone. I am excited to begin out training with Dog Training Elite and get our Bernese Mtn Dog Madi under control. Great experience!

22 May 2026: continuing progress and positive experience with Rhett and DTE. That aspect is consistent. Me personally, my only struggles are disability and logistics based limitations. I still recommend DTE for service dog training hands down. My limiting factors make it difficult for me to travel alone and stay repetitive with the public/social aspects of training. DTE has been great in working with me and I get positive feedback during sessions I just feel as if I’m not meeting standards setting my own confidence back which I take accountability that is likely impacting my dogs performance. We are continuing to work with DTE on solutions and workarounds. I know it is a process. 02 May 2026: As expected, another great experience with the team from DTE. The training focus is not to make the dog a robot on command but to really bond a resource companion with detailed explanation in behavior dynamics. Rhett's many years of experience really shines with every session. 23 Apr 2026: Rhett was absolutely awesome working with my service dog in training. I had a gap in sessions due to medical reasons and he was great with instruction and getting us back on a structured path. Dog Training Elite has gone above and beyond in accommodating me in a rural area by coming out an hour and half just to make sure we are getting the training and resources we need! Watching my dog progress after each session and getting the handler skills needed to continue work between instructor lead sessions is really an amazing to experience. 06 Aug 2025: First day of training was exceptionally informative. Julia was extremely professional and knowledgeable instilling confidence moving forward. I definitely know I made the right choice for my service dog needs. 18 Sept 2025: Fast forward into a few sessions later and still absolutely impressed with the level of professionalism and results

Rhett has been awesome to work with. They had a trainer that didn't work out for our first lesson but they didn't count that against us and since then he has been amazing. He is great not only getting the dog started on the commands but also teaching me and my family how to handle the different situations.

Elite Dog Training has been such a positive experience for both me and my baby Manon as we begin her service dog journey. Rhett, Kaitlyn, Reina, and even the few lessons I had with Jaime and Parker have all been incredibly kind, knowledgeable, and supportive. What I appreciated most is how they truly listened to my concerns without judgment and always made me feel comfortable asking questions. Their guidance, patience, and encouragement have made a huge difference in helping us build a strong foundation. You can tell they genuinely care about both the dogs and their people. I’m very grateful for their help and would absolutely recommend them to anyone looking for thoughtful, compassionate, and effective dog training.
