Are Dog Training Group Classes Necessary?
Your puppy or older dog has completed basic obedience training. Congratulations! You and your pet have not only developed trust and strengthened your bond, but your puppy or dog is well on their way to becoming a loyal, loving companion.
Dog Training Elite First Coast knows dog training is truly a lifelong pursuit. As your puppy or dog masters the basics, you can move onto more complicated tricks and training. Maybe you’ve progressed from “sit” to seeing how long they can hold it, or you’re working on taking your pet through an obstacle course.
It can be hard to come up with new ideas to train your dog, and after months of having structured training one-on-one with your pet it can be especially difficult to know what to do next. What will benefit both you and your dog the most?
Dog Training Elite offers dog training classes in Jacksonville / St. Johns for puppies and older dogs that may be the answer you’re looking for. While group training classes aren’t always necessary, they can be extremely beneficial to both your dog and you.

Benefits of Group Classes
Just like humans, dogs all have their own personalities. Some may receive and respond to all the training they need from private, one-on-one instruction, while others may find great benefit from attending a group class. Group classes can be a great asset to both dogs and their owners, since it provides them with many different situations and experiences they may not otherwise have. Here are some other benefits of attending group dog training classes:
Socialization
Group dog training classes have a number of benefits, particularly with socialization. Taking a puppy to group classes once they’re immunized will help them grow into a well-socialized dog comfortable with other dogs and humans. Older dogs who weren’t well socialized as puppies can learn to socialize in a small, safe environment. Trainers will recognize signs of possible conflict between dogs and help owners learn how to diffuse situations and take care of their pets, and dogs will learn how to interact appropriately with each other.
Dog training classes can also be beneficial for owners! If you bring your dog to a group class, you’ll meet other dog owners and become part of a community. Dog Training Elite First Coast likes to make group classes exciting for both dogs and their owners, so expect to learn fun training games and enjoy an environment that feels less like a class and more like a social outing. Classes meet once a week, and both you and your dog will look forward to going every week.
Focus
Besides the socialization benefits, group classes are a great tool for dogs to learn to work around distractions. If your dog is perfectly obedient at home, but loses his or her mind at the dog park and forgets all they’ve learned, group classes are the way to go. Group classes are a safe way to help your dog learn to listen to you, even when they’re surrounded by exciting sights, smells and sounds.
Hands on Learning
In a dog training class, you are in control of the training. While your pooch may occasionally be used as the ‘demo’ dog, there will be very few instances where your dog only has to listen to the trainer. With a class, you are the trainer, and the instructor is just acting as a guide. With all of Dog Training Elite First Coast’s training options - in-home or through a class - you will always be the No. 1 trainer, not just sitting on the sidelines as someone else takes charge.
Each dog is unique, and the small classes at Dog Training Elite First Coast will allow you and your dog to still receive personalized attention and training. You will also have the opportunity to learn from other dogs and their owners. Imagine the trainer advises another owner how to help their dog learn to play independently. Later, you might remember the advice and apply it to your own dog, away from the class.

Our Balanced Theory

The Dog Training Elite First Coast Difference
Regardless of whether it’s an in-home training session or a group class, the Dog Training Elite First Coast training method is the same. Dog Training Elite First Coast focuses on positive reinforcement, also called “Classical Conditioning” or the “Pavlovian” method. Research has shown positive reinforcement to be more effective with longer lasting results than other training methods.
Dog Training Elite First Coast does not use punishments or shock collars and instead pairs positive reinforcement training with an electronic collar for superior results. An electronic collar is not a shock collar and does not harm the dog. It is a gentle electronic pulse, similar to the tug of a leash, used to get the dog’s attention. It is never used as a punishment for bad behavior.
Other dog trainers use harsh static collars or spray collars which have been shown to be less effective. The difference becomes clear when comparing a dog that is trained out of anxiety and intimidation vs. a dog who truly desires to please from the inside out. Dog Training Elite First Coast’s method of focusing on positive behavior reinforcement nurtures a dog’s loving and naturally obedient nature.

Your Dog is Destructive
Whether it’s chewing on furniture or shoes, going to the bathroom in your house, or anything else your dog is not supposed to do -- it’s time to get them trained out of these sorts of behaviors. Even older dogs who were previously well-behaved may develop bad habits later in life and need a training refresher.
Your Dog is Aggressive
Aggression can manifest itself in multiple ways; perhaps your dog growls or snaps at you when you get close to his or her food, or toys. Even more concerning is when your dog is aggressive towards other dogs or humans. Yes, sometimes dogs play in a way that seems aggressive, but if your dog is lunging at or snapping at people or other dogs while you’re on walks, it’s time to get a trainer’s help.
Your Dog Misbehaves on Their Leash
Walking nicely on a leash does not come naturally to most dogs but it is something that can be learned. Again, even older dogs who previously walked well on a leash may start to act out.
Your Dog is Anxious or Fearful
If your dog is dealing with severe separation anxiety, or is fearful in new environments, a trainer can help. For separation anxiety a trainer will work with you and your dog on a routine to reassure your dog. General training, especially in group classes, can help dogs build confidence.

Group classes can be especially helpful because they put your dog in a safe environment with the kinds of distractions you experience outside. We have had an awesome experience with Dog Training Elite! We were ready to give up on our husky because not only was she naughty but didn’t listen either! Eric has been great! We were so stressed & thought we would have to do something drastic & couldn’t see anyone fixing our issue. Our 1yo Rottie Odin was biting & not allowing us to pet him, barking at ppl & dogs and jumping on us. I really did a lot of research online & followed a lot of advice INCLUDING going thru 2 other trainers (one told us we should put him down)! Eric has been working with us for around 2mths now & he has changed everything! Odin hasn’t had one bad incident since day one of working with Eric. I have a large breed, Sherlock, about a 1yr and 7 months old. He had problems with listening if you weren't right next to him and a anxiety/dominance issue that would turn toward aggression to people. The trainer, Eric, was amazing and helped us and Sherlock gain confidence in his training in recall, boundaries in the yard and doors, place, on his leash, and sit and down. We also learned how to prevent and work with Sherlock when be displayed his anxious/dominance behavior to my family or guests. They were flexible with scheduling, and checked periodically throughout the week to make sure the training was going well. I would highly recommend them.— Sara Broskie

Outstanding!!! After a serious google search for dog training in the area I just moved I went with my intuition and hired Eric from Dog Training Elite First Coast for my 7 months old German Shepard. After a long conversation on the phone I realized I made the right choice. Eric came to my place, met my puppy and evaluated him and we discussed the different training plan options. No hidden fees, everything was upfront and honest, no push for the expensive plans so the owner of the dog actually has the final word on what is best for his/hers budget and of course what he/she expects from the training. There is a plan for every budget!!! I was given a folder with all the details and info about the company and training and Eric business card. Any breed can participate in any plan. So far my puppy had 2 one-on-one classes and it already paid off. I had a scary situation when coming back from shopping I found my entrance door opened. No sound, no movement and I just froze for a second. I completely opened the door and called my pup and to my surprise he was waiting exactly on the line where Eric trained him to stay for door boundary. Eric practiced with him the previous week about this!! My pup could have been roaming in the building or outside and get lost or hit by a car but he stayed inside and waiting for me. I was just stunned!!! My 7 months old pup actually listened to Eric and remembered that he needed to stay at the boundary and not go out. Best investment to hire Eric!!! I realized that I was so lucky I started my pup on a 6 weeks plan!!! My pup adores Eric, he looks at him with reverence and makes great eye contact and listens to him. Ok, you might say but what about when Eric is not there training my GSD? Fair question!!! So far all that Eric taught me how to handle my pup worked out nicely. I do have homework!!! Repetition, repetition everyday!!! I am looking forward for the future classes and I already want my doggie to have the advanced classes. Thank you Eric for your professionalism, patience, great communication and feedback but most of all for giving me an amazing opportunity to have my puppy be a better behaved dog. I can't express how happy I am to have found Dog Training Elite First Coast. Training with a professional trainer was a game-changer for me and my puppy. Nemesis is my 7-month-old Doberman puppy. She is very loving and full of energy but has a super aggressive and destructive attitude. No matter what I did, I could not get her under control. I couldn't go for walks, have company, or take her anywhere in public because of her aggressive behaviors. I watched video after video with zero luck. I was at the end of my rope when I found Dog Training Elite First Coast. The trainer, Eric, even during the assessment visit, gave me tips that worked immediately! The best part was that the training wasn't just learning the basics for Nemesis; I could ask questions and learn how to address any behaviors I wasn't sure how to deal with. He gave me all the information to correct the bad behavior immediately. I cannot recommend Eric and Dog Training Elite First Coast enough. It's like I have a new dog! Highly recommend! After getting my first goldendoodle, (Dudley) I decided to begin obedience training to start my puppy off on the right foot. I searched for a while and even visited a few places where they take the puppy for a couple of weeks and return it trained. Frankly, I wasn't a fan of this approach. The dogs were kept in small crates and away from home and their families. I felt bonding with my new puppy was equally important to his training so Elite First Coast was the perfect option. They train in your home, weekly. That way your puppy can bond with the family while learning AND the family learns how to do the training that is needed. The only hesitation I had initially was the training collar. I learned that the training collar is actually nothing to fear! Eric was patient and kind with Dudley and never used it except in a positive way. By the time we finished initial obedience training Dudley is proficient in healing, sit, down, stay, coming when called (recall), not running out the door when guests arrive, and even some off lease work. We have even hired Eric to take Dudley to the next level for service dog training to be an emotional support dog for me. I cannot say enough great things about Eric. Eric was SUPER helpful to deal with our dog. He was a stray we found behind a super market and had a few behavioral issues we wanted to tweak, including nipping at strangers. Eric listened to us and our issues and taught us how to communicate effectively with our dog. Like anything worth doing, this is an ongoing process that we have to consistently reinforce, but we were provided the tools to continue our work with our pup and build on his training.
