ESA vs. Therapy vs. Service Animals: What's the Difference?

Service animals are animals that have been trained to assist individuals with tasks specific to their needs.

  • Redirecting attention when an individual is beginning to feel overstimulated
  • Reminding owners to take medication
  • Waking someone who is having a nightmare

Service dogs are valued in the mental health, health care and disability community and are protected under ADA laws which allow owners to take their service dog with them everywhere they go. Dog Training Elite Dallas—Fort Worth trains dogs to serve individuals with autism, diabetes and PTSD.

Dog Training Elite Dallas—Fort Worth trains autism service dogs to benefit and assist children with autism. Autism service dogs can be trained to track their child in case of wandering and redirect a child’s behavior when they are starting to become overwhelmed.

PTSD service dogs help ground owners to reality, especially in public settings. These service dogs can also be trained to recognize signs of a panic attack and regulate emotional responses through pressure.

Diabetic service dogs can alert their owners to their low blood sugar and provide stability, safety and support.

Visit our individual web pages to understand more about the differences and benefits of autism service dogs, PTSD services dogs and diabetic service dogs.

Although all dog owners may feel the emotional benefits of owning a dog, the dog needs to be prescribed by a licensed mental health professional to a person with a disabling mental illness such as anxiety or depression to legally be considered an ESA. Emotional Support dogs can be of any age and any breed whereas service dogs usually begin training as puppies.

In addition to being prescribed by a mental health professional, owners may wish for their dog to undergo more specific training. If you are looking for emotional support dog training in your local area, Dog Training Elite Dallas—Fort Worth has you covered.

The professional dog trainers of Dog Training Elite Dallas—Fort Worth are experienced with training various types of therapy animals. Trainers work with a dog’s natural temperament to ensure a strong, loving bond between dog and owner. Training can be personalized to fit the needs of the owner.

It is important to note that Emotional Support Animals are meant for just that - emotional support. Dogs trained to assist with specific tasks that may be associated with a disability are service animals. Training a dog to be an Emotional Support Animal or a therapy dog is less intensive than training to be a service animal.

Therapy Animals are very similar to Emotional Support Animals, except that they are often used to bolster the mental health and wellbeing of a community, as opposed to just an individual. Therapy dogs are often seen serving in hospitals, rehabilitation or care centers with their owners.

Owners who feel their dog may be a good fit for this kind of community service can have them receive top-notch training from Dog Training Elite Dallas—Fort Worth.

The most important thing to note as a difference between Emotional Support Animals, Therapy and Service dogs, is service animals are protected under the Americans with Disabilities Act which states service animals must be able to accompany their owners wherever they go. Emotional Support and Therapy animals do not have the same protections and public establishments may have their own rules about ESA and therapy dogs.

Whether you’re ready to get a new lease on life with the help of a service dog, or strengthen the existing bond with your dog, Dog Training Elite Dallas—Fort Worth has the experience and resources you need.

Our Balanced Theory

We base our training around the "Classical Conditioning" model (a.k.a. "Pavlovian" or "respondent conditioning"). This includes developing conditioned or automatic reflexes to commands. In its simplest form (after proper conditioning), when the owner says "sit," the dog automatically sits without thinking about it. Our unique techniques ensure our program is a success no matter what behavior we encounter.

Dog Training Elite Dallas—Fort Worth is the top company near you that uses professional positive dog training methods.

We have learned so much from Kyler and the crew at Dog Training Elite Frisco! Our experience has been amazing. Our Belgian Mal has become such an awesome, well trained dog! She loves making us proud while learning from Kyler. We did the inhome one on one training and I highly recommend this! She has such great recall now and follows commands so great!! She even learned some awesome Malinois tricks! It was so valuable and worth every dime! Thank you Dog Training Elite! We will be at the group trainings with Nyx!

I’ve been having the best experience through trainings with DTE. With the help of Cat, I’ve seen so much improvement in my puppy’s (Honey) obedience, without taking away her sassy personality. It’s almost unbelievable how much progress she’s made by the end of each session. Cat has been a tremendous blessing in reigning in this crazy girl by taking the time to understand how Honey acts and reacts. So glad to have gone with Dallas Training Elite!

We have met every trainer in the facility and I have to say - top notch passionate trainers are what build Dog Training Elite. From that start with the in-home evaluation Tra was able to help us better understand our dogs. From how they think and why they do what they do to explaining how we will go about correcting their issues while building their confidence. Tra, Jordan, Felicity, and Kyler have all helped us with our Doberman-Lab mix and American Bulldog mix. Both dogs have completely different attitudes and issues but the four of them where able to empower us so that they could handle more than just a trick but could hold commands like it is their jobs, no matter if there is a cat in the bushes or another dog. Huge shoutout to the trainers canines as well, they bring them along to help with distractions but you cannot help but admire how well trained they are for their job!

Winston has done so well with Dog Training Elite Frisco! From the initial evaluation, we could tell the trainers are proficient and genuinely love their jobs. The training has been personable and professional. We have enjoyed every minute of it. Winston has never had trouble with commands when he is not distracted; however, when distracted, he has a hard time focusing. Felicity has helped us so much and Winston is doing great! We look forward each week to our training time. The training is engaging and fun for both of us…and Winston sleeps good after training. We are very thankful and grateful to the good people at Dog Training Elite. If you’re looking for a trainer we feel you can’t go wrong with Dog Training Elite Frisco.

Love dog training elite! Our neighbors noticed a difference in our pup after one session! She’s learning things we always wanted and tried to teach her but just didn’t know how. They do a great job empowering us to teach her. Each session they send a different trainer so she learns to listen to whoever is working with her. Their trainers also go above and beyond for our pup. We are so proud of our pup, and so thankful for Dog Training Elite Frisco!

I have had the most wonderful time working with this company. They’re reliable, always respond, always on time and never make you spend money on things you don’t need. Definitely the first trainer I’ve had out of three that actually cares about where you and your dog end up. They’re willing to take extra time to keep working with you and set you and your dog up for success.
