Service Dog Training in Frisco, TX

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) defines a service dog as “a dog that is individually trained to do work or perform tasks for a person with a disability.” Disabilities include mental or physical impairments that affect an individual’s ability to perform one or more major life activities (walking, seeing, etc.).

Because service dogs play such a key role in the life of disabled individuals, they are protected by the law. Places of residence, employment, and commercial facilities cannot discriminate against disabled individuals with service animals. If you are wondering how to get a service dog, you can either purchase a fully trained dog or purchase a service puppy and train it.

With our service dog training in Frisco, TX, we ensure that your dog is trained to meet the specific needs of your disability, providing personalized support and empowering both dog and handler for long-term success.

From Fearful Rescue to Confident Companion – Exceptional Experience in Frisco! I cannot thank Joseph and the team at Dog Training Elite Frisco enough for the transformation in my 1-year-old GSD/Lab mix, Lily. I rescued Lily at 4 weeks old, and despite my best efforts, she struggled with severe anxiety, leash pulling, and reactivity toward people and other dogs. At 50 lbs, she was becoming impossible to walk, and I was truly worried she’d never be able to enjoy the world around her. After an insightful evaluation with Tra, we decided on the 2-week Board and Train. As a nervous dog mom, I was worried she would shut down, but Joseph was a godsend. To ease my anxiety, he provided daily pics and updates on her progress, which meant the world to me. Joseph didn’t just "train" her; he matched her energy, recognized her sweetness, and built her confidence from the ground up through discipline and engagement. He used creative training environments—like walks in the woods and outdoor sessions—to meet her exactly where she was. It’s clear Joseph views dog training as an art and is his passion; he invested so much heart into her, and the bond they formed was great to see. The "hand-off" was seamless. Joseph spent significant time showing me how to transfer those skills at home. Austin then provided the "missing link" with in-home reinforcement sessions. He was fantastic at coaching me to ensure I was executing commands the "right way" so Lily and I could have long-term success. Between the board and train and the group classes, Lily has become a thriving, loyal family companion. I have zero hesitation recommending Joseph for any Board and Train needs and Austin for expert in-home coaching. They didn't just train my dog; they empowered me to be a better owner and Lily a thriving, loyal family best friend!

We have had a great experience with Dog Training Elite! The center based training with Austin was very helpful with necessary basic commands, and the in home sessions with Ali were amazing with specific needs in our home environment. Their office staff, along with their trainers are wonderful and truly care about your pups well being!

I have thoroughly enjoyed the training I have received so far with my dog saki! She did a two week in training facility followed up with several sessions with Tra. I am really pleased with the results I have seen so far. Saki is the sweetest dog but she doesn’t not do well meeting new people in my own home. She had even nipped a few friends. We have been able to work on that with her and I have learned how to help her be more calm and have less anxiety when meeting new people. Previous training groups basically said I would just have to put her in another room which didn’t work because she would just bark the entire time. Now I know how to get her to be quiet and it be peaceful even if she isn’t ready to meet the person yet. I really appreciate the free consultation provide because that made me decide immediately that Tra and the rest of the team were perfect for Saki. They are also very prompt with scheduling as well. Next step is working on big boy Bear and excitement around others! Will be working with them again in the future!

Off to a bit of a rough start being transferred between trainer. Then got Alina who earned my dog’s trust and now he loves lessons and works hard. We have made great progress and are almost ready for our trip to Utah. Cannot say enough great things about her.

Ali’s been great with me and my dog Spike, who has “reacted” negatively to people and other dogs, but he likes Ali (almost), as much as me, and that says a lot. Ali is good at communicating with both of us, and we’ve made significant progress with obedience and recall, and we’re working on getting Spike more comfortable around other dogs. I’ve been very happy with Ali as our trainer.

My puppy is currently being trained by Dog Training Elite, and our experience has been great. Ali is our trainer and she is phenomenal at what she does. My dog gets beyond excited to see Ali every single time she arrives for our sessions. She knows exactly what she is doing, is so loving with my dog but also gets him to do precisely what she wants him to do. It’s incredible to watch him work with her. You can tell she really takes pride in her trade and also loves dogs so much and truly wants to see the dog and their owner succeed in their training.

Ali has been awesome working with my mini dachshund, Lucia. From the beginning, she has been patient, intentional, and genuinely invested in helping Lucia grow. Lucia has made so much progress since working with her. Ali has been training her in service tasks, which is her specialty, and it has been amazing to watch Lucia build confidence and truly step into her work. You can tell Ali really understands how to train service dogs with clarity and purpose, and she takes the time to make sure both the dog and the handler understand what is being asked. Her group classes have also been such a great experience. They are challenging in the best way and push both the dogs and the handlers to think and stay engaged. She keeps everyone on their toes and creates real life scenarios that make a big difference in how reliable the dogs become. I am so grateful for the care, structure, positive energy, and knowledge Ali brings to her training. Lucia would not be where she is without her, and I cannot recommend her enough to anyone looking for serious, intentional training.

Jordan is one of the trainers that we worked with in training our Rottweiler, Naya. He used his Rottweiler, Atlas, to aid in the training of our girl. It was obvious that his dog was expertly trained. It was very impressive to watch him interact with him. Jordan was very knowledgeable and professional. He helped us immensely. Each session we had, I felt like we got more than our money’s worth. We could see progress very quickly in our Naya. I would and have recommended Jordan and DTE to anyone.

Ali has been my service dog trainer for myself and my Golden Retriever, Cooper. She is very knowledgeable in her training and her ability to effortlessly maintain control over a very active and curious, 4 month old puppy is amazing! After only a couple of months, I am now able to take Cooper anywhere with me, including restaurants, where he is a complete angel and stays in place with no further commands. I also have another Golden and a rescue dog in my home and with all of the distractions they create, I still am able to maintain control of Cooper. Ali has changed mine and Cooper’s life, allowing me to comfortably go wherever I desire. I would highly recommend Ali to anyone with the need for service dog training, or any type of training. Also, I consider Ali a friend as well since my entire furry family absolutely loves her!!

Highly recommend Dog Training Elite, and specifically Ali as a dog trainer! Ali has been doing in-home sessions with us to help our Maltipoo puppy learn core obedience skills- including sit, place, down, heel, leave it, and more. As first-time dog owners, we’ve found her guidance invaluable. Ali is incredibly knowledgeable, patient, and warm, but she also doesn’t hesitate to give us honest feedback when we need it, which we truly appreciate! Our puppy absolutely loves her, and each session leaves us feeling more confident and equipped. We’ve seen such great progress and genuinely recommend Ali and Dog Training Elite to anyone looking for an effective dog-training experience.

I have a 7 months Dutch shepherd mix, I am very happy with the training, already can see improvements on my dog and Ali our trainer is so nice, she is always on time and very kind but firm. We are still at the beginning of the journey but so far I’m happy and excited for the future. Thank you so much. Today was my last class, and I couldn’t be happier with the experience. My puppy and I worked with three different trainers: Ali, Trey, and Austin, and each one exceeded my expectations. What really stands out is that they took the time to understand both me and my dog as individuals, tailoring each session to our specific needs, pace, and level of maturity. I always felt seen, supported, and understood. Their communication as a team is also exceptional, no matter which trainer you work with, they’re all on the same page and aware of your progress and goals. I 100% recommend Elite. We’re even hoping to move toward service dog training next, so hopefully more to come soon!

They have changed the staff and ever since they are more engaging without never following up with you. “Ali” a new dog trainer is amazing. They need more people like her that are passionate to teach and know what they’re doing. Ever since I had training sessions with her my dog and I have been behaving tremendously well and are improving fast. When I started that wasn’t the case. I grateful for having Ali with us. She is a sleeping gem. They need people like her that want to be there and not just show up to the session and do the minimum and leave. The only con is that they never follow up or find you to keep rescheduling. If you never contact them they will never contact you. That’s the only issue I see but other than that good people. Now things look Better with “Kelly” the scheduler as she leaves reminders and figures out how to go around your schedule and make your needs met for the dog to be trained.

I’ve had a few in home trainings now with Ali. She’s great! Super knowledgeable, is able to command authority and show sweetness to my dog at the same time! Shes confident and dedicated to the training. One time my dog was being a little testy and she patiently continued to give a command until he responded. And then she loved on him and rewarded him! She’s a great teacher for me as well! She helps me understand how to implement the same training Elite does with my dog at home and at work. 10/10 Recommend Ali and Elite!!

I cannot say enough good things about this training facility!!! They were flexible and encouraging as we worked thru the training and my dogs anxiety. Ali, specifically, has been a life saver and has really connected with my pup. She has made training fun and even possible (which was questionable at first). I highly recommend training here!!

We have worked with several trainers from here and they have all been great. Ali is exceptional. She is very professional, kind and wise. Our dog has gone from an absolutely unmanageable puppy, to an under control lovable boy. He has transformed under their great training and we are SO grateful! We love him, and we love Dog Training Elite!

Is a Service Dog The Same As a Therapy Dog?

Many types of working dogs increase the quality of life for their handlers. The three main categories of working dogs are service animal, therapy animal, and emotional support animal. Each category covers different areas of support and different levels of protection under the law.

  1. Service Animal

As mentioned above, service animals assist individuals with disabilities. Depending on the person’s needs, the service animal learns how to perform certain tasks. Guide dogs, for example, help blind individuals safely navigate their environment. Seizure response dogs respond to their handlers when the individual is having a seizure. Service animals are highly trained and specialized, and they are also offered the most protection under the law compared to therapy or emotional support animals.

Dogs are not the only kinds of service animals - miniature horses are often trained to support individuals with disabilities!

  2. Therapy Animal

Therapy dogs provide comfort and improve the mental well-being of individuals in hospitals, hospice care, retirement homes, nursing homes, schools, and more. These dogs must have a friendly, calm demeanor and be comfortable when handled by strangers.

Therapy dogs are not trained to perform specific tasks, but they must be obedient and well-mannered. Therapy animals are permitted in some areas where pets are not, but they have fewer protections than service animals. All therapy dogs must be certified before they can offer their services to the community.

  3. Emotional Support Animal

Emotional support dogs relieve loneliness, anxiety, depression, and other symptoms of mental health disorders. They provide comfort to their handlers, but they are not trained to perform specific tasks. Most emotional support animals are sensitive to the emotional changes of their handler and will remain close by at all times. Emotional support animals are not protected by the ADA, but residential buildings must permit emotional support animals.

What Can Service Dogs Do?

Service dogs are crucial in assisting individuals with various disabilities and conditions, providing them with support, independence, and companionship. These highly trained dogs can perform specific tasks tailored to the needs of their handlers. Learn about breeds that make great service dogs, who can benefit from a service dog and the training that will help these pups meet their handler's needs.

Service dogs are a great help to disabled individuals thanks to their incredible ability to perform highly specialized tasks, like opening doors, switching lights on and off, assisting with balance and stability, guiding, pulling wheelchairs, answering phones and making calls, finding objects or places, unloading and loading items, clearing rooms, finding help, and many more. Service dogs improve the lives of disabled individuals by increasing their autonomy.
Individuals with certain diseases and disorders can benefit from a highly trained service dog. Dogs have an incredible sense of smell and they can detect the chemical changes associated with oncoming seizures and increases in blood pressure. Alert service dogs alert their handler to these situations to prevent a life-threatening emergency. Alert dogs also help those with extreme allergies detect potential allergens in food.
Disabled or epileptic individuals are more prone to emergencies than the average person. Service dogs are trained to alert their handler to a potential emergency, and alert surrounding individuals to an active emergency. Service dogs can also call for help on pre-programmed phones.

Service Dogs for Anxiety, PTSD, and Autism

Service dogs trained to assist handlers with severe anxiety or depression perform specific tasks that reduce the potential for panic attacks or self-harm attempts. Such tasks include deep-pressure therapy, tactile stimulation, alerting, clearing rooms, blocking strangers from approaching, and more. Service dogs trained to assist those with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) have greatly improved the lives of many veterans.

Service dogs also make a big impact on the lives of children with autism. Children with autism are often prone to meltdowns, have trouble communicating, and are quick to run off or become easily lost. Service dogs prevent and mediate all of these behaviors to provide a higher quality of life for children with autism and their families.

As autism is a spectrum disorder, each child has varying needs of assistance. Autism service dogs perform the following tasks:

  • Tracking: Children with autism often wander away, and a parent’s worst fear is turning their back for just a moment and discovering their child is gone. Autism service dogs will track the child if this ever happens.
  • Tethering: This task minimizes wandering, which is common in public settings. The child is tethered to the service dog’s leash or harness, preventing him or her from wandering away.
  • Behavior Interruption: Repetitive and ritualistic behaviors are typical of autistic children, as are meltdowns when the child becomes overstimulated. Autism service dogs recognize these negative behaviors and redirect the child’s attention when they start. A simple paw or nudge is all it takes to prevent a meltdown.

How Do I Get a Service Dog?

If you are wondering how to get a service dog, there are a couple of different approaches. Some service dogs are purchased outright, fully trained. Or a compatible dog is selected and trained from an early age. Training a dog from the start is the best option, especially for those with specialized needs.

Training a dog to perform service responsibilities must start from day one. Only certain breeds are suited to service work, and breeders put a lot of time into raising puppies to be service animals. Once you have purchased a service puppy, additional training is necessary to prepare your puppy for life as a service dog. This is a complicated process that involves various steps. Dog Training Elite makes getting a service dog easier with our service dog training program.

Our talented trainers can help select puppies that are prepared for a life of service from well-respected breeders. When these puppies enter the service dog training program they are closely monitored for behavior and temperament and can be fully obedience trained by the age of six months. These puppies undergo extensive socialization and additional training to ensure they are well-suited for service and therapy needs including specialized service training alongside the new handler.

This program is ideal for handlers who want to take part in the developmental years and extensive training of their service puppy.
