Labradors have been the No. 1 most popular dog breed in America for close to three decades. It’s not hard to understand why – Labradors are playful, energetic, smart and friendly. They make great companions for individuals and families and generally get along with children and other pets.

Although high-energy, Labradors are laidback and easy going, unfazed by the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Bred originally to be working dogs, their intelligence also makes them a great option for service or therapy dogs.

If you are starting out with a brand new Labrador puppy, Dog Training Elite Richmond’s personalized in-home training programs can help you develop a strong bond with your new puppy and harness all of the incredible benefits of the breed.

Labradors are a highly intelligent breed that loves to please, making Labrador puppy training in Richmond a breeze. Working in your own home, a Dog Training Elite Richmond trainer will create a personalized training plan for you and your puppy, addressing any unique needs or issues your puppy may have.

Dog Training Elite Richmond offers expert Labrador puppy training services near you in Richmond.

Socialization is also important for your new puppy. Once your puppy has completed obedience training, Dog Training Elite Richmond offers puppy group classes which is a great way to help your puppy socialize with other dogs and people, as well as learn to obey you in a distracting environment.

While beginning Labrador puppy training at an early age can be important and extremely helpful for dogs, if you adopt an older Labrador dog don’t worry! Dog Training Elite Richmond’s training methods work with older dogs too, and Labrador training will still be a snap with your Labrador’s eager-to-please attitude.

What Makes Labradors Unique?

There are many reasons to love Labradors. Here are just a few:

  1. Labradors Love the Water
  2. You may have already known this fact, because Labs are pretty famous for loving the water. They’re actually made for it! A Lab can use their thick tail – sometimes referred to as an “otter tail” – as a powerful rudder. They also have wide, webbed feet to help them swim fast and waterproof coats that help them stay comfortable even in cold water.

  3. They were Bred as Hunting Dogs
  4. Initially, Labs were bred as duck retrievers, and then later as game-hunting companions. They tend to excel in retriever field trials and retriever hunting tests. They’re incredibly versatile as sport dogs, excelling in agility, rally and obedience sports.

  5. Labs Come in Three Colors
  6. Labrador coats come in three colors – black, yellow, and chocolate.

  7. Labs can do Almost Anything
  8. Their intelligence, energy and affectionate nature makes them a popular choice for service and therapy dogs, as well as for search and rescue teams, and bomb and drug detection. Suffice to say, all Labradors are very good dogs who do very good jobs.

Dog Training Elite Richmond is the #1 labrador puppy training near you in Richmond.

Keeping Your Labrador Happy and Healthy

Although Labradors are famously laid back and friendly, that doesn’t mean they don’t require attentive care. If you’re considering adopting a Labrador, or you already have one and want to learn more about how to keep your pup happy and healthy, consider the following:

  • Labradors Need Plenty of Exercise - Although Labs are easy going, they need plenty of exercise – even up to two hours a day. This can be made up of long walks, training sessions, playing fetch or going to the dog park. Though it’s important to make sure they get enough exercise, you also need to be careful you don’t let your dog overdo it, especially as a puppy why their joints and bones are still growing.
  • Groom Your Lab Weekly - Labradors have short, smooth coats that are prone to shedding. Combing them weekly with a comb or bristle brush, or combing daily during shedding season, can help keep shedding under control. Make sure you have a good vacuum!
  • Manage their Diet - As big, energetic dogs, Labs need to eat a lot – but they can be prone to putting on pounds, as well. Follow the recommended amounts on dog food packaging, or consult with your vet.
  • Make sure Your Labrador Gets Lots of Attention - Labradors are very social. Socialization with other dogs is important, so trips to the dog park, doggy play dates or group training classes at Dog Training Elite Richmond can be beneficial for both you and your dog. If your Lab has to be home without you for long stretches of time, be sure to have stimulating dog toys, puzzles and chew toys available for them, and consider hiring someone to check on and play with them during the day.

Our Balanced Theory

We base our training around the "Classical Conditioning" model (a.k.a. "Pavlovian" or "respondent conditioning"). This includes developing conditioned or automatic reflexes to commands. In its simplest form (after proper conditioning), when the owner says "sit," the dog automatically sits without thinking about it. Our unique techniques ensure our program is a success no matter what behavior we encounter.

  • Empowering Owners
We empower Owners to train so their dog knows who to obey at all times.
  • Personalized
We deal with problem behaviors on a personal basis.
  • Environment Specific
We train wherever issues tend to arise (i.e. jogging, park, home).
  • Supportive
We support Owners in the off-hours (when training is "not in session").
  • Involved
We work with all members of the household.
  • Simplified & Customized
We plan training around the owner's schedule and require only 20 min/day follow-up practice.
  • Continued Training
Additional programs / group sessions offered after in-home training.
  • Lifetime Investment
We follow up & are invested in the owner's success long-term.
  • Satisfaction Ratings
Our high client satisfaction rating sets us apart from competitors.

We have mastered, SIT, PLACE(STAY implied) COME, OFF and now DOWN( STAY implied)from up close, to 100 feet away. Zipper is 7 months old and we are only 5-6 weeks into Dog Training Elite with Paul. I could not be more pleased! I have trained dogs and horses in the past so the language and intentions are clear. I ask 15 minutes of questions before in home training starts. I am always validated and enlightened.

This training is the real deal. What I love (besides my dog that listens) is that I know the way to help her to be a better behaved dog.

I started training for my dog Nala about 2 months ago. She is a petite size 18 Pound Golden doodle and overall a good dog she just needed some manners when I have company especially. She use to jump , nibbles ,on people’s feet incl. our and was very territorial in our home when we had anyone showing up. Always barked at strangers or anything comes her way. To be honest I thought about rehome if no improvements are made. Then I signed her up for training with ELITE. BEST thing I could have done. I was mad at my self that I haven’t done it sooner. Completely different dog after the first 2 in home sessions Paul knows his stuff and he is so awesome to work with. Nala love him and is very comfortable with him now. I recommend ELITE 100 Prozent to anyone. Do not hesitate. Money so well spent for a piece of mind.

We love working with Dog Training Elite! Paul is such a phenomenal trainer and is extremely knowledgeable in his trade. Everyone in our family has mentioned how our corgi Gingers training has transformed him into a completely different dog from where we started. He used to bark at everything that moved, jump up on guests, and barely ever listen to a command. It’s a night and day difference from the first training session.

Our experience with Paul from Dog Training Elite Richmond has been nothing short of transformative. One of the standout features of their service is that they come to your home, providing personalized training in an environment familiar to your pet. From the very first session, the shift in behavior of our corgi, Ginger, was clearly evident. Anyone familiar with corgis knows of their characteristically headstrong nature, and Ginger was no exception with his stubborn streak. However, with Paul's guidance, we saw immediate results within a couple days and an awe-inspiring transformation in Ginger within mere weeks. Previously, Ginger's challenges, like bouts of incessant barking, jumping on visitors, and his inherent stubbornness, had us at our wit's end. However, under Paul’s expert training, we were not only able to curb these behaviors but Ginger also swiftly passed his AKC Canine Good Citizen test and subsequently achieved his Service Dog Certification. It's a joy to see him thrive! The freedom we now enjoy with Ginger is incomparable. Being able to take him anywhere without a second thought about his behavior is liberating. Everywhere we venture, we are met with admiring glances and praises for Ginger's discipline and training. Our Saturdays are further enriched by the group classes at Dog Training Elite, where Ginger mingles with other well-trained dogs, continuously expanding his learning in a lively community atmosphere. Paul's personable demeanor, coupled with his expertise, ensures that every training session is both enjoyable and productive. And whenever we encounter a new challenge with Ginger, Paul's readiness to assist, combined with his patience and enthusiasm, shines through. In conclusion, Dog Training Elite Richmond comes with my highest recommendation. For anyone hoping to transform their furry companion's behavior while building a strong bond, this is undoubtedly the place to be!

Our trainer Brooke is awesome. She is working with our 1 year old German Shepherd rescue that knows a few commands, has high anxiety and is very dog reactive. After 6 home visits along with our follow through Bear knows all his commands. His anxiety level is next to none and he can actually go on a walk with little to no reaction to other dogs. I never thought Brooke could manage the walk with other dogs near Bear. But miracles do happen and she did it to my surprise. I can't say enough how pleased we are with Bears training and are looking forward to group training.

Our two-year old schipperke was half-trained, but would frequently test the limits or be defiant and stubborn at times. We have him in public frequently and worried for his safety if he ever got away from us. After his in-home sessions with Paul, he now listens all the time and with time and practice is becoming the well-trained companion we knew he could be.

This is truly the last dog trainer you'll ever need. The in home, the site visits and the group classes -- they're fantastic. The best part? They teach YOU how to teach YOUR dog ANYTHING. Once you know the foundation, your dog can learn anything. Why does this work? The correction and praise are so clear that your dog learns quickly-- and without the need for treats. That means that your dog listens when it counts, not just when you have a goodie bag. I recommend them to everyone I can!

Labrador Training With Dog Training Elite Richmond

The Dog Training Elite Richmond training method is based around classical conditioning with an emphasis on positive reinforcement. Classical conditioning means developing conditioned or automatic reflexes to commands, so when you say “sit,” your dog will sit automatically. Labradors respond especially well to positive reinforcement, but Dog Training Elite Richmond trainers will tailor the Labrador puppy training method and programs to suit any individual dog’s needs.

While all dogs share qualities of kindness, loyalty and intelligence regardless of breed, Dog Training Elite Richmond recognizes that every dog is an individual and may require different training methods. Dog Training Elite Richmond stands out by taking into consideration what breed your dog is when making training goals.

Whatever your dog’s breed, Dog Training Elite Richmond can help you and your dog overcome any obstacles related to obedience and socialization. Our unique techniques ensure our program is a success no matter what behavior we encounter.
