German Shepherds consistently rank in the top five most popular dog breeds in America - and for good reason. German Shepherds are highly intelligent and loyal. With proper training and socialization, they are also obedient and great with other dogs and children. Not to mention, they’re beautiful!

Dog Training Elite Milwaukee has years of experience with German Shepherd training and has developed obedience and personal protection training programs suitable for this breed. Because of their intelligence and natural herding instincts, German Shepherds can also be trained as service dogs.

Like any intelligent dog, however, a German Shepherd without proper training can become a handful. Their intelligence can lead to stubbornness. Extensive training and socialization are key to harnessing the unique abilities of this breed and diminishing any potential destructive behaviors. Thankfully, the high intelligence of German Shepherds enables them to learn commands quickly. The professional training of Dog Training Elite Milwaukee will help any German Shepherd become an incredible companion to individuals and families.

Dog Training Elite offers professional German Shepherd training for puppies and adults near you in Milwaukee.
German Shepherd Puppies vs. Adults

Dog Training Elite Milwaukee recommends starting dog training as early as possible, soon after a puppy is ready to leave its mother. Puppies are capable of learning basic commands, and smart German Shepherd puppies do great with early training.

If you adopt an older German Shepherd, or never got around to puppy training, don’t worry! Dog Training Elite Milwaukee has adult dog training programs as well. A complete puppy training typically takes a few months. Adult dog training can take longer or shorter, depending on whether a dog needs to unlearn bad habits in addition to being trained.

In-Home German Shepherd Training

Dog Training Elite Milwaukee offers specialized in-home German Shepherd training for both owners and dogs of any age. Working with a German Shepherd and the owner directly in the home allows dog trainers to create personalized training plans for individual dogs, as well as address any unique needs or issues. Once a dog has completed in-home training, they can take group classes for more in-depth training - Dog Training Elite Milwaukee offers both puppy and adult dog group classes.

Beginning training in the home also helps owners bond with their dogs so when the dog trainer leaves, no progress is lost.

Dog Training Elite offers in-home dog training for German Shepherds in Milwaukee.

Our Balanced Theory

We base our training around the "Classical Conditioning" model (a.k.a. "Pavlovian" or "respondent conditioning"). This includes developing conditioned or automatic reflexes to commands. In its simplest form (after proper conditioning), when the owner says "sit," the dog automatically sits without thinking about it. Our unique techniques ensure our program is a success no matter what behavior we encounter.

Dog Training Elite Milwaukee is the top company near you that uses professional positive dog training methods.
Empowering Owners

We empower owners to train so their dog knows who to obey at all times.

We deal with problem behaviors on a personal basis.

Environment Specific

We train wherever issues tend to arise (i.e. jogging, park, home).

We support owners in the off-hours (when training is "not in session").

We work with all members of the household.

Simplified & Customized

We plan training around the owner's schedule and require only 20 min/day follow-up practice.

Continued Training

Additional programs / group sessions offered after in-home training.

Lifetime Investment

We follow up & are invested in the owner's success long-term.

German Shepherd Specific Tips Be Consistent

Dogs, and especially German Shepherds, do best with consistency. Always make sure to use the same verbal and/or physical cues during training to avoid any confusion. Also, be consistent about rules - establish at the beginning, for example, whether or not your dog is allowed on the couch. Then, don’t change the rule under any circumstances.

German Shepherd Specific Tips Get Plenty of Exercise

German Shepherds are an energetic breed - if you don’t have a yard for your dog to play in, that’s fine, but make sure your German Shepherd gets daily exercise through walking, hiking, etc. An energetic dog with little to no exercise can become a destructive, disobedient dog.

German Shepherd Specific Tips Positive Reinforcement

Since German Shepherds are historically trained as working dogs, they thrive on being busy. Training is a great way to give German Shepherds the mental and physical stimulation they need.

Dog Training Elite Milwaukee has developed training programs for puppies and adult dogs alike based on positive reinforcement. German Shepherd training with our in-home option is entirely possible. Read on to learn more about the Dog Training Elite Milwaukee training method.

The Dog Training Elite

Dog Training Elite Milwaukee uses modern training methods focused on positive reinforcement and bonding between dog and dog owner. Dog Training Elite Milwaukee never resorts to the use of punishment to help dogs unlearn bad behavior. The difference becomes clear when comparing a dog that is trained out of anxiety and intimidation vs a dog who truly desires to please from the inside out.

The Dog Training Elite Milwaukee training theory is mostly based around classical conditioning, also known as the Pavlovian method or respondent conditioning. This includes developing conditioned or automatic reflexes to commands. In its simplest form (after proper conditioning), when an owner says "sit," their dog automatically sits without thinking about it.

Through a combination of commands and an electronic collar, dogs learn to follow commands at once. The electronic collar is not a shock collar; it is a gentle electronic pulse, similar to the tug of a leash, used to get the dog’s attention. Other dog trainers use harsh static collars or spray collars which have been shown to be less effective. Dog Training Elite Milwaukee’s method of focusing on positive behavior reinforcement nurtures a dog's loving and naturally obedient nature.

Dog Training Elite has been a great experience for myself and my dog. Mary met with us in home to do an evaluation, Paul completed the one on one course with my dog. Group training as follow up has been fun. Mary and Paul have been great to work with. 10/10

Paul and Mary were amazing, I felt as if I was being instructed correctly and there was a complete change in behavior of my dog Goku. He was extremely excited puppy who did not understand how to control his excitement by week 3 he learned the basic obedience and continued on. Final week of private training Goku did not rush to the door nor jump on trainer. Without Dog Training Elite I would be feeling very anxious around other people and dogs but now I am completely comfortable with him being off leash around animals and people.

Dog Training Elite Milwaukee has worked magic with our mini bernidoodle and our Cane Corso. The doodle is being trained as a service animal and has amazing command response even as a young puppy(started training at about 6 months). The cane corso was a very good, well socialized, but highly independent animal. She did what she wanted and thought she was the boss. Since her basic training, she is much better behaved and listens to commands. I no longer have to leash her on walks through the woods, she never leaves my side, and comes on command when I let her run free.

I cannot say enough good things about Mary at Elite Dog Training! Our journey with her to train our therapy dog was nothing short of extraordinary. From the very first session, it was clear that Mary possesses an unparalleled expertise and passion for what she does. Mary's approach to dog training is both effective and incredibly enjoyable. She not only understands the intricacies of canine behavior but also knows how to communicate her knowledge in a way that's accessible and easy to grasp. Her deep connection with dogs was evident from the moment she met our sassy puppy, and it was heartwarming to see how quickly our furry friend responded to her guidance. One of the most remarkable aspects of our experience with Mary was the speed at which we progressed through the lessons. It felt like an instant transformation out of the sassy puppy phase! Mary tailored each training session to our specific needs and goals, ensuring that we were always moving forward. Her teaching style is patient, compassionate, and filled with positive reinforcement, making every training session a joy for both our dog and us. Beyond the exceptional training skills, Mary also provided us with valuable insights into dog psychology and behavior. She taught us not only how to train our therapy dog but also how to understand and communicate with her effectively. Her guidance went beyond just the lessons, equipping us with the tools and knowledge to continue nurturing a happy and well-behaved dog at home. Mary's dedication to her craft and genuine love for dogs is truly remarkable. She has not only transformed our sassy puppy into a well-behaved therapy dog but has also enriched our lives with the joy and fulfillment that comes from having a beautifully trained canine companion. If you're looking for an outstanding dog trainer who will work tirelessly to help you and your furry friend achieve your training goals, Mary at Elite Dog Training is the absolute best choice. She exceeded our expectations in every way possible, and we are forever grateful for the incredible experience she provided. Thank you, Mary, for making our journey to a well-behaved therapy dog such a fantastic and unforgettable one!

Our puppy and we learned so much from Mary. Charlie knows so many commands and we now know how to teach more. Attending the group classes reinforces the private training and enhances his and my skills. Mary is very patient, knows educational psychology and is very knowledgeable about dogs. I would definitely recommend her.

We are thrilled with the experience we have had with Dog Training Elite! We interviewed a couple of dog trainers on the onset. I am so glad we chose Mary! She has been so helpful and professional throughout the process. She has gone above and beyond to make sure that we are successful in getting Coco to where she needs to be. After the second week Coco was extra stubborn while practicing what we learned. After emailing asking for advice Mary offered to come by for an extra session to work with her. We love that she came to our home each week with a slow build of skill set. We committed to the practice for 10 or so minutes 5/6 days a week and it paid off. I would highly recommend Mary.

We just finished up our six in home training sessions with Mary and we can’t say enough about how good of an experience it was. We started our black lab puppy at 14 weeks and feel like he has such a great foundation to grow and be the best pup he can be. Mary answered all our questions about the e-collar and made sure we were confident in using it properly. He’s already walking confidently on a leash in a heal position and has great recall off leash, along with all his other basic commands!

We were introduced to Mary and Milwaukee Dog Training Elite through a Veterans organization to train our German Shepherd puppy to become a service dog. Mary was experienced, informative, and kind. She also produced results. Mary was always available to help guide us through any challenges we were facing. The combination of training in our home combined with group classes at her training facility provided us with the skills, challenges, and scenarios needed to maximize our dogs’ potential. We were so pleased with her services, that we sought therapy dog training for our new Saint Bernard puppy. As you can imagine, the difference in breeds required a variety of training methods for the same results. Mary is definitely not a one size fits all dog trainer. She took the time and effort, and has the experience needed to bring out the best of any breed or age of dog. We have recommended her time and time again when asked how we have such well behaved dogs.

This was the first time I've owned an XL Breed, and the stronger he got, the more I knew I needed a trainer for help. After extensive research, we found Mary and DTE. She has been absolutely amazing. Our Great Dane stopped pulling and jumping after the first session! It has only gotten better since then. We can now confidentiality take him anywhere with us, and recieve endless compliments on his behavior. We name drop her as much as possible to anyone who will listen!

Mary came into my house with a young, energetic, and BIG Bernedoodle puppy who ran the household. After just 2 weeks, this dog took the tools Mary taught him and developed into an obedient young pup while retaining his playful and goofy personality. She stood strong as he tried to do things his way and had “temper tantrums” to avoid her new standard. She was great to work with and I’d recommend her to anyone looking for a better relationship with their dog.

Mary did a great job setting us for success with our dog! Our golden doodle is about one year old and behaviorally was already doing well, Mary helped us to modify the training to fit our specific wants and needs and perhaps most importantly taught my wife and I how to keep pushing and advancing his training on our own in the future! Very thankful to have chosen Dog Training Elite!
