Dog Training Elite Lancaster

Service Dog Training in Lancaster, PA

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) defines a service dog as “a dog that is individually trained to do work or perform tasks for a person with a disability.” Disabilities include mental or physical impairments that affect an individual’s ability to perform one or more major life activities (walking, seeing, etc.).

Because service dogs play such a key role in the life of disabled individuals, they are protected by the law. Places of residence, employment, and commercial facilities cannot discriminate against disabled individuals with service animals. If you are wondering how to get a service dog, you can either purchase a fully trained dog or purchase a service puppy and train it.

With our service dog training in Lancaster, PA, we ensure that your dog is trained to meet the specific needs of your disability, providing personalized support and empowering both dog and handler for long-term success.

DTE was the best possible thing we could have done for our dog Luna and our family. We got luna from a shelter and while she was a sweet girl, when we took her outside she was reactive to other dogs and started to seriously bite us while we were on walks. We started working with Betsy and after the first session with her, luna was no longer jumping and biting! Luna has now gotten to the point where she can be off leash at the park and we trust one another enough to let her roam and that she will come when we call her back. We have seen her confidence grow so much since working with Betsy and our confidence as well. Betsy herself was so easy to work with. She is competent, confident, and incredibly caring for both us and our dog. She kept a clear line of communication that made it easy to reschedule or switch around some of our appointment times. She would also bring her different dogs from her farm to help train luna and they were all wonderful. They clearly loved working with Betsy as well. We would 100% recommend anyone to DTE. Thank you Betsy!!

Betsy was simply amazing to work with. I had 3 very unruly dogs with fighting and jumping constantly. She provided me with tools and resources that were practical and easy to follow. Besides being a great dog trainer, her personality and customer service focused was very much appreciated and made her stand out among others.

I adopted Liz as a first time dog owner about a year ago and while she quickly warmed up to me, it was impossible to have guests over, someone knock on the door, walk past another dog, or even have my neighbor help out when I have to work late. Betsy came over and explained the process and some of the reasoning for Liz's behavior coming from a shelter. Betsy worked very closely with Liz and I and after just the first session, Liz became so much more confident. Betsy taught me how to communicate with Liz in a way she understands making both of our lives easier! I'm so thankful for Betsy and her patience working with Liz and I. I didn't think I could love my dog even more!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ We had an amazing experience with Dog Training Elite! We worked with Jamie and Betsy. They were incredibly patient, knowledgeable, and fun to work with while working with our Goldendoodle puppy, Teddy. They took the time to help us understand not only the training techniques but also how to consistently reinforce them at home and outside of the home. We used another dog training service before and had no results like this! Teddy learned so much throughout the program, and we saw a huge improvement in his obedience, focus, and confidence. Most importantly, Jamie and Betsy gave us the building blocks and tools we can continue using for the rest of Teddy’s life. It’s a commitment but a great investment for you and your dog. Their support, encouragement, and genuine care for both dogs and owners made the entire experience enjoyable and worthwhile. We highly recommend Dog Training Elite to anyone looking to build a strong foundation for a well-behaved and happy dog! Thank you, Jamie and Betsy, for setting Teddy up for success! 🐾💕

DTE was the right choice for us. Betsy knows dogs and dog behavior, which she translates into successful training. Her extensive experience allowed her to explain what we needed to do with our dog to achieve our goals. I have had dogs my whole life but never had a dog that was properly trained and socialized until I found Betsy and DTE. Now I have a dog that goes anywhere; Home Depot, Lowes, coffee shops, breweries, Cabela's, parks and public streets with no problems. Betsy has made my dream of having a well behaved, go anywhere, meet anyone companion dog come true.

Working with Jaime at Dog Training Elite Academy has been an incredible experience. Over the past five months, Jaime has helped our 1-year-old pug, Buster, grow from an energetic pup into a confident and capable pet therapy dog in training. Jaime’s patience, knowledge, and love for what he does truly shine through in every session. We are so grateful for his guidance and for the new opportunities Buster now has to make a difference in people’s lives.

It turns out you CAN teach an old dog new tricks! I reached out to Dog Training Elite on behalf of our CEO to train his 2 grown adult male dogs (one of them to be a therapy dog and the other to focus on his obedience). Both dogs are thriving and the joy the therapy dog is bringing to the senior homes is so endearing to witness. Dog Training Elite goes beyond their incredible trainers… the schedulers are a dream to work with, as well. Seriously, these are the people to go to! My boss and his wife are so happy with their experience and highly recommend this team (and I do too!!)😀

Remarkable, results driven personal training for you and your dog! We've been working with Betsy and Jaime since adopting our Mastiff puppy, and we couldn't be happier. The team is very personable, professional and knowledgeable, and they tailor their training to the goals you set for you and your dog. I have had dogs my whole life, and this is by far the best behaved, well-rounded pup I've ever had - all thanks to DTE and their attentive, personalized training. The best part is the skills they have taught me that have helped me help my Mildred be the best she can be! Yes, you have to put in the work, but if you do, and follow their guidance, you will succeed! Mildred is now 9 months old (and huge!) but so well socialized with both people and other dogs, and her obedience is amazing. Some told us that "you can't train a Mastiff" but this team is so experienced and knowledgeable I've no doubt they can help any pet parent achieve the results they seek. Lastly, there are other trainers who turn dogs into robots with no personality - this team clearly loves and respects all canines and works with each individual dog with as much patience, love, and passion as if it were their own. Highly recommend!

Dog Training Elite Lancaster: I can't overstate the dramatic change in my dog since Jaime and Betsy engaged in training with her. Prior to Elite, we had our puppy in private training, with mediocre results. I was skeptical that Elite would be able to get her to the level we wanted. Literally after one lesson, we began to see results. By week 3 it was DRAMATIC! Jaime and Betsy provide the tools and coaching. You need to do the work also. But if you do, the results will overwhelm you!! Almost as important as training your dog, Dog Training Elite trains the handler and gives them the skills to understand successful methods. We are so grateful that we found Betsy and Jaime. Remarkable trainers!!

Dog Training Elite was simply amazing! Working with a 6 yr old Dachshund is no small feat, but Betsy came in and from day 1, my dog’s behavior had improved. He’s less reactive, less anxious, more confident, and more obedient and has just continued to get better. He’s going to have a much more fulfilling and exciting life since we decided to train with Dog Training Elite.

Choosing Dog Training Elite was the best decision I could’ve made for my dog and my home. I have a 75lb pitbull who struggled with obedience. My home began to feel chaotic. I didn’t enjoy having guests over. After many hours of research trying to find the best training that suited us, I decided to go with Dog Training Elite. They first do an evaluation before you commit to anything. Just from the first session I learned so much. I looked forward to every session. Jaime is amazing. He worked with me and my dog during all of our at home sessions. He helped me understand my dog’s behavior more and the proper ways to correct it. By the last session I had a new kind of confidence and trust in my dog. I now enjoy having guests over again. Our bond became stronger. I know I can take him just about anywhere now and not get embarrassed with his behavior. We still have our group classes to go but I can’t wait to continue this journey and keep building that confidence and trust.

We hired Dog Training Elite Lancaster to train our two Corgis, Hitch and Hanna. We really wanted them to be therapy dogs but they were both a bit too independent and energetic and so I didn't really hold out much hope. But 3 months with Jaime and Betsy training both us and the dogs made our dream a reality. Both dogs passed their Good Canine Citizenship exam last week and will now be able to accompany me on my visits to amputee peers at the Reading Rehab Center and Reading Hospital!

Dog Training Elite not only saved my dog, but it brought the PEACE back into our home! DTE is far from cookie cutter, and they made sure to focus on our specific needs and concerns. They left us with 10/10 results, and new sense of control and happiness with our pup! If your dog is driving you crazy like ours was, I highly recommend calling Dog Training Elite before giving up! Thank you again Jaime and Betsy!!!!

Is a Service Dog The Same As a Therapy Dog?

Many types of working dogs increase the quality of life for their handlers. The three main categories of working dogs are service animal, therapy animal, and emotional support animal. Each category covers different areas of support and different levels of protection under the law.

  1. Service Animal

As mentioned above, service animals assist individuals with disabilities. Depending on the person’s needs, the service animal learns how to perform certain tasks. Guide dogs, for example, help blind individuals safely navigate their environment. Seizure response dogs respond to their handlers when the individual is having a seizure. Service animals are highly trained and specialized, and they are also offered the most protection under the law compared to therapy or emotional support animals.

Dogs are not the only kinds of service animals - miniature horses are often trained to support individuals with disabilities!

  2. Therapy Animal

Therapy dogs provide comfort and improve the mental well-being of individuals in hospitals, hospice care, retirement homes, nursing homes, schools, and more. These dogs must have a friendly, calm demeanor and be comfortable when handled by strangers.

Therapy dogs are not trained to perform specific tasks, but they must be obedient and well-mannered. Therapy animals are permitted in some areas where pets are not, but they have fewer protections than service animals. All therapy dogs must be certified before they can offer their services to the community.

  3. Emotional Support Animal

Emotional support dogs relieve loneliness, anxiety, depression, and other symptoms of mental health disorders. They provide comfort to their handlers, but they are not trained to perform specific tasks. Most emotional support animals are sensitive to the emotional changes of their handler and will remain close by at all times. Emotional support animals are not protected by the ADA, but residential buildings must permit emotional support animals.

What Can Service Dogs Do?

Service dogs are crucial in assisting individuals with various disabilities and conditions, providing them with support, independence, and companionship. These highly trained dogs can perform specific tasks tailored to the needs of their handlers. Learn about breeds that make great service dogs, who can benefit from a service dog and the training that will help these pups meet their handler's needs.

Service dogs are a great help to disabled individuals thanks to their incredible ability to perform highly specialized tasks, like opening doors, switching lights on and off, assisting with balance and stability, guiding, pulling wheelchairs, answering phones and making calls, finding objects or places, unloading and loading items, clearing rooms, finding help, and many more. Service dogs improve the lives of disabled individuals by increasing their autonomy.
Individuals with certain diseases and disorders can benefit from a highly trained service dog. Dogs have an incredible sense of smell and they can detect the chemical changes associated with oncoming seizures and increases in blood pressure. Alert service dogs alert their handler to these situations to prevent a life-threatening emergency. Alert dogs also help those with extreme allergies detect potential allergens in food.
Disabled or epileptic individuals are more prone to emergencies than the average person. Service dogs are trained to alert their handler to a potential emergency, and alert surrounding individuals to an active emergency. Service dogs can also call for help on pre-programmed phones.

Service Dogs for Anxiety, PTSD, and Autism

Service dogs trained to assist handlers with severe anxiety or depression perform specific tasks that reduce the potential for panic attacks or self-harm attempts. Such tasks include deep-pressure therapy, tactile stimulation, alerting, clearing rooms, blocking strangers from approaching, and more. Service dogs trained to assist those with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) have greatly improved the lives of many veterans.

Service dogs also make a big impact on the lives of children with autism. Children with autism are often prone to meltdowns, have trouble communicating, and are quick to run off or become easily lost. Service dogs prevent and mediate all of these behaviors to provide a higher quality of life for children with autism and their families.

As autism is a spectrum disorder, each child has varying needs of assistance. Autism service dogs perform the following tasks:

  • Tracking: Children with autism often wander away, and a parent’s worst fear is turning their back for just a moment and discovering their child is gone. Autism service dogs will track the child if this ever happens.
  • Tethering: This task minimizes wandering, which is common in public settings. The child is tethered to the service dog’s leash or harness, preventing him or her from wandering away.
  • Behavior Interruption: Repetitive and ritualistic behaviors are typical of autistic children, as are meltdowns when the child becomes overstimulated. Autism service dogs recognize these negative behaviors and redirect the child’s attention when they start. A simple paw or nudge is all it takes to prevent a meltdown.

How Do I Get a Service Dog?

If you are wondering how to get a service dog, there are a couple of different approaches. Some service dogs are purchased outright, fully trained. Or a compatible dog is selected and trained from an early age. Training a dog from the start is the best option, especially for those with specialized needs.

Training a dog to perform service responsibilities must start from day one. Only certain breeds are suited to service work, and breeders put a lot of time into raising puppies to be service animals. Once you have purchased a service puppy, additional training is necessary to prepare your puppy for life as a service dog. This is a complicated process that involves various steps. Dog Training Elite makes getting a service dog easier with our service dog training program.

Our talented trainers can help select puppies that are prepared for a life of service from well-respected breeders. When these puppies enter the service dog training program they are closely monitored for behavior and temperament and can be fully obedience trained by the age of six months. These puppies undergo extensive socialization and additional training to ensure they are well-suited for service and therapy needs including specialized service training alongside the new handler.

This program is ideal for handlers who want to take part in the developmental years and extensive training of their service puppy.
