ESA vs. Therapy vs. Service Animals: What's the Difference?
Service Animals
Service animals are animals that have been trained to assist individuals with tasks specific to their needs.
- Redirecting attention when an individual is beginning to feel overstimulated
- Reminding owners to take medication
- Waking someone who is having a nightmare
Service dogs are valued in the mental health, health care and disability community and are protected under ADA laws which allow owners to take their service dog with them everywhere they go. Dog Training Elite of Fort Wayne trains dogs to serve individuals with autism, diabetes and PTSD.
Dog Training Elite of Fort Wayne trains autism service dogs to benefit and assist children with autism. Autism service dogs can be trained to track their child in case of wandering and redirect a child’s behavior when they are starting to become overwhelmed.

Emotional Support Animals
Although all dog owners may feel the emotional benefits of owning a dog, the dog needs to be prescribed by a licensed mental health professional to a person with a disabling mental illness such as anxiety or depression to legally be considered an ESA. Emotional Support dogs can be of any age and any breed whereas service dogs usually begin training as puppies.

I cannot begin to say enough good things about Dog Training Elite of Fort Wayne. From day one of training, we noticed a huge improvement in our Rottweiler\blue heeler puppy. DTE is a wonderful family owned/veteran owned dog training company that exceeded our expectations. The in-home training started when our puppy was 5 1/2 months old. We are so thankful we started her young Clint has a real gift with animals training and customer service. Our puppy went from Jumping on everyone, play biting, face licking and chasing grandkids to being very well behaved. At Seven months old the grandkids can walk/give her commands, she helps round up the chickens without chasing them or barking at them. She goes to work with me and sits in “place” for an hour at a time when told to go to place. We are working so Hope will become a therapy dog and possibly dual purpose service dog for me for a medical condition. We cannot say enough good things about Clint and his company. I wasn’t sure there was any hope to train my very stubborn German shepherd. Nathan and Clint taught me how to walk my dog and work through his doggie temper tantrums. We have a feisty Rottweiler ( year and a half old) and have been through several trainers. Dog Training Elite has given us true results. They are the real deal! One thing I really have appreciated is the consistency in training. Part of the time we worked with Clint, the owner— and he is fantastic, but then we also had Nathan, and we didn’t miss a beat. Nathan is every bit as well-versed and it helped having different people working with our dog.They are firm, caring, compassionate and knowledgeable.It is well worth the money. Don’t go cheap. I started my 15 month old German shepherd with Dog training Elite around 6 weeks ago, and Nathan has been amazing!! We (family and friends included) have all noticed a huge difference with Bear already. We used to have to lock him up in a bedroom when anyone came over, however this weekend we had my sons 5th birthday party and I brought him downstairs to see how he would behave, he was perfect. He was still ornery and excited, but he didn’t bark, lunge or even act nervous around anyone at the party (and there were a handful of people he did not know). I was even comfortable enough that I took off his muzzle and let him socialize for a while. This was huge for us! We definitely would not have gotten this far without Nathan and dog training Elites’ help. I’m excited to continue with the free lifetime group classes to keep him on the right path!— Jessica A
