Training is key to creating a safe, loving environment for your canine companion.

Dogs are great learners and always eager to please their owners. With the right techniques, a little patience, and consistency from the whole family, Fido can learn just about anything.

Besides teaching your dog respectful behaviors (like no excessive barking and no begging from the table), training keeps your dog:

Safe

If your dog knows to come on command, or “stay” in place, both of you will be safer when outdoors. Untrained dogs may dart off into the road, or become distracted by their surroundings and get lost.

Smart

Consistent instruction is mentally stimulating and improves your dog’s cognitive health. Learning also prevents boredom and the destructive habits that often result from it.

Happy

Dogs thrive on positive, loving relationships with their human companions. A dog that doesn’t behave is unlikely to have a good relationship with the people around him. By teaching your dog what behaviors are acceptable, you establish a comfortable and loving environment.

Dog Training Elite is proud to have the highest rated professional dog trainers near you.

Effective training is key to a positive dog-owner relationship. Learning how to communicate with your canine companion is difficult without assistance, however. If you’ve been struggling with your dog’s behavior, it may be time to find a professional dog trainer near you.

Finding Professionals In An Unregulated Industry

There is no regulating body or licensing process for professional dog trainers. Anyone can advertise themselves as a trainer, whether they have the necessary skills and knowledge or not.

Navigating through this unregulated industry can be tricky. As a dog owner, you want a qualified trainer that will:

  • Respect you, your dog, and your family.
  • Stick to your schedule.
  • Train in various settings, environments and stages.
  • Never harm your dog.
  • Address your dog's unique needs and behaviors.
  • Empower you to build a healthy, loving bond with your dog.
  • Use positive training methods.
  • Teach you how to better communicate with your dog.
  • Provide ongoing support and check-in after training sessions.

It takes years of experience and education for trainers to be able to offer all of the above. So how do you find a professional that fits your and your dog’s needs?

"Pawsitive" Indicators of a Good Dog Trainer

Some things to look for when searching for a dog trainer include:

Training Technique

There are various training methods out there, but the most effective is positive reinforcement. According to the American Kennel Service, positive reinforcement techniques “are based on the science of animal learning and have the bonus of strengthening the dog-owner bond.”

Stay Away From:
  • “Alpha Dog” or dominance-based training techniques. Dominance theory is based on incorrect assumptions of dog and wolf behavior. Dog behaviorists have proven that positive techniques are the only healthy way to communicate with dogs. Dominant, punishment-based training causes anxiety, fear and aggression.
  • Trainers that use choke-chains, shock collars, sprays, and other punishment tactics.
Personality

You want to enjoy the time spent with your trainer, so find someone with a happy, exciting personality. You’re looking for a professional, of course, but we are all dog lovers here, so light-hearted attitudes are important. Your dog must connect well with a trainer for efficient learning, so pay attention to how your dog reacts to your chosen trainer.

Stay Away From:
  • Trainers that make you feel bad about your relationship with your dog or your dog’s behavior.
  • Rude, dismissive attitudes, and trainers that are too uptight.
  • Trainers that use harsh words and aggressive tactics.
Empowerment

A dog trainer is truly a teacher at heart, and their goal is to teach you how to better communicate with your dog. You need a coach who helps you connect better with your pet, empowering you to build a strong bond. When the trainer is gone, you’ll be the one giving the commands, so make sure you find someone that is understanding, patient, and committed.

Stay Away From:
  • A trainer that does not want to involve you and your family members in the process.
  • Programs that only offer board and train -- effective training involves various settings, including classes and inside the home.
  • Trainers that cannot explain how dogs learn and cannot teach you how to communicate with your dog.
Credentials

Dog trainers do not need a license, but there are various education programs available. Look for a trainer that can prove their credentials with experience, education, and certifications. If you have a specific need, such as personal protection or service training, be sure to find a trainer that is experienced in that area.

At Dog Training Elite, our dog trainers are educated and experienced with training dogs of all breeds, sizes and ages. All locations are registered with the Professional Retriever Trainers Association, the International Association of Canine Professionals, and the American Kennel Club.

Stay Away From:
  • Trainers that cannot prove their education, experience, or background.

Customization

All dogs have unique personalities and life experiences that shape their behaviors. A well-qualified trainer offers customizable programs tailored to the unique needs of each client and dog. In-home training approaches are preferred, so the trainer can observe your dog in his home environment (where he feels most comfortable acting naughty!).

You should also look for a trainer that covers both basic obedience and advanced programs.

Stay Away From:
  • Trainers that can’t teach more than basic obedience commands.
  • A trainer that diagnoses medical issues as reasoning for problem behaviors. Trainers are not licensed veterinarians and should never diagnose a dog. If a medical issue is suspected, a qualified trainer will recommend you speak to a vet.
Good References

References and consumer reviews are key to finding a reliable trainer. Ask around at the dog park for good references, and research each trainer or company. Read through customer reviews and take a look at how professional their website appears.

Stay Away From:
  • Trainers that have no website or online references, or trainers that have poor reviews.
  • Trainers with reviews that mention aggressive tactics, fear-based techniques, and punishment-based theory.

Our Balanced Theory

We base our training around the "Classical Conditioning" model (a.k.a. "Pavlovian" or "respondent conditioning"). This includes developing conditioned or automatic reflexes to commands. In its simplest form (after proper conditioning), when the owner says "sit," the dog automatically sits without thinking about it. Our unique techniques ensure our program is a success no matter what behavior we encounter.

Dog Training Elite is the top company near you that uses professional positive dog training methods.
Empowering Owners

We empower owners to train so their dog knows who to obey at all times.

Personalized

We deal with problem behaviors on a personal basis.

Environment Specific

We train wherever issues tend to arise (i.e. jogging, park, home).

Supportive

We support owners in the off-hours (when training is "not in session").

Involved

We work with all members of the household.

Simplified & Customized

We plan training around the owner's schedule and require only 15 min/day follow-up practice.

Continued Training

Additional programs / group sessions offered after in-home training.

Lifetime Investment

We follow up & are invested in the owner's success long-term.

This is an amazing group of people who are very professional, helpful, and caring. During the peak of COVID last year I took my pup to Olympus Cove Vet (NEVER take your pets there) and they didn't let me go inside during the appt. I'm not sure how they handled my pup, but she was different after the appt and became aggressive towards me. Trevor taught me so much about my pup and helped us stop my dogs aggressive behavior. She is back to being the sweet little girl she was before the vet experience and no longer bites, runs away from us, or snarls. Trevor not only taught us about anxiety/aggression in dogs, but he taught us basic dog training tools we will use for pups we get in the future. Thank you so much Trevor and Dog Elite!

I was ready to rehome my aggressive pitbull. But through working with Salena I love my dog again and I am able to take her out for walks with out her trying to attack other dogs or people that frighten her. She is building confidence with each session. Thanks DTE for helping me keep my dog at home were she belongs.

Tyler was absolutely amazing! Our dog is wonderful and funny and amazing and pretty gosh darned smart, yet he still had bad habits and a lack of ability to understand some basic commands. Tyler turned all that around and is pretty much a miracle worker. We even asked for something off the menu in our last session and I’m not kidding, Tyler had him doing the off menu item within four minutes. ❤️🐶❤️ I wish I had those skills!

So happy that Evan with DTE walked into our lives, he has made our Athena girl our true Goddess. She makes everyone in my famliy feel so special by the way she minds & comforts us all. Thank you again, Whittaker’s

Can’t put into words how incredible this program was for our dog Bean and our lives. Before we started classes we could barely go anywhere with our Dog and have people over because of his reactivity and jumping. After just one In hone session the jumping was eliminated and having people over was no longer something we had to worry about. Tyler was so helpful in personalizing the program for our needs, he even met us at a dog park to help with Bean’s reactivity around other dogs. Don’t waste your time with other trainers, try Dog Training Elite!

Dog Training Elite is a fantastic group to work with! They tailored our training program to target the specific undesirable behaviors. Tyler and Matt are so knowledgeable about dog behavior and training tactics. We contacted DTE after our dog, Cooper, bit another dog. We didn't know what to do as he was becoming increasingly reactive to other dogs. Matt and Tyler reassured us that we weren't at a dead end and that dog reactivity is normal. They gave us the tools we needed to allow Cooper to succeed and with a lot of practice and consistency he has improved significantly! I would recommend DTE to anyone looking for quality dog training!

Dog Training Elite is the best training program that I have done. My dog has learned so much and still going to learn through the training. While he has learned a lot, it has been a great training for me and my other family members. The trainers stress the importance of practice and I am telling you that practice is the key. Many people whether in the neighborhood or at my work are impressed by how well behaved my dog is is many situations. I would highly recommend this training to everyone who is looking for great training. It is well worth the money you pay.

All of the trainers at Dog Training Elite are amazing but Tyler was definitely our favorite! He is very knowledgeable when it comes to dog behavior and training. We learned so much from him and he was always reassuring and encouraging, even when it wasn’t the easiest. I now have the training and confidence to take my dog on walks and to the park more often. The trainers at Dog Training Elite are very professional and if you’re thinking about hiring a trainer, they are worth the investment!

We have been working with Dave to train our bull terrier mix who has reactivity and aggression issues. Dave has been very helpful and always available in case we have any issues. Our dog has come a long way from when we first began training. We attend dog classes on the weekends to get her used to being around other dogs and even inside our home she has shown a lot of improvement. I highly recommend training with Dog Training Elite as we felt hopeless just a couple months ago!

The only dog training you’ll ever need! Matt and team are fantastic, super knowledge, professional and great teachers. They taught the lessons to us as owners as much as our dog, which helps to reinforce the right behaviors. I’ve had dogs my whole life and wish they all would have had this training. Our family is much better balanced as a result of these approaches, we’ve benefited from both obedience and ESA training. If you have a dog training need, Dog Training Elite and Matt are the place to go!

We are so happy our friends referred us to dog training elite! We had previous training that wasn’t sticking with our dog so decided to try this. I wish we would have known about them beforehand because after just the first session we couldn’t believe how well he was doing! Our trainer, Tyler, was so awesome!! He was informative and patient with us, answered any questions we had throughout the process and very reliable. I never would have thought we could have our dog come to us and also be off leash in just a session or two, but he did!! So I can’t say thank you enough to Tyler because our life has changed because of this! At first we were hesitant, because of the price and because we weren’t sure if it would work but we knew something had to change. I would do it all over again for just how much our dog has learned over the 6 weeks, it’s crazy!! My advice to you would be, DO IT!!! You won’t regret it!! We just have so many good things to say about Tyler and the dog training elite company altogether and would recommend them to anyone we know.

We had THE BEST experience at DTE -- Tanya specifically was magic with our Frenchie Louie. I highly recommend their boot camp -- Louie is a new dog! He is patient and quiet and so well behaved. The training provided the framework and structure for him to learn the basics and then some. Our lives have drastically improved! Love the staff and can't say enough about this program. I refer everyone I know -- worth every penny! Thanks so much to the team at DTE -- we will be lifelong friends! :) Tanya and Louie are the cutest of friends -- I love it so much!
